Disney Infinity discs to contain future movie assets

Disney Infinity discs to contain future movie assets

Disney Infinity, the ambitious game that brings together various Disney franchises, is being pitched as a "platform" that will constantly update with new toys and playsets to collect. That means the team at Avalanche will be preparing to roll out characters for unreleased Disney movies, and part of that includes putting some future assets on the disc.

Wii U's Pikmin 3, Game & Wario missing launch window

Wii U's Pikmin 3, Game & Wario missing launch window

Nintendo has announced some upcoming release dates, but the ones to make the list aren't as interesting as the ones that conspicuously didn't. The Wii U launch window closes on March 31, and it appears some of Nintendo's franchises won't be making that period after all.

Disney Infinity preview: bringing franchises together

Disney Infinity preview: bringing franchises together

Disney worlds are on a collision course in Disney Infinity. Much hullabaloo has already been made about its business model, which not only apes, but one-ups Activision's Skylanders. In addition to selling figurines for the Infinity base, Disney also plans on selling Play Sets (which determine what world players will jump into), and power discs as well (which manipulate environments, add set pieces, or offer character buffs).

Three play sets will be available at launch time--The Incredibles, Monsters University (the upcoming prequel to Monsters Inc.), and Pirates of Caribbean. Each will feature a distinctive play style, but all will have players working to complete stories in those respective worlds to unlock set pieces for the game's Toy Box mode. The sets also boast their own unique gameplay style, which can be played alone or with a friend for drop-in, drop-out co-op action.

How Disney Infinity's starter set was chosen

How Disney Infinity's starter set was chosen

Disney Infinity is the House of Mouse's twist at Activision's successful Skylanders franchise, by incorporating real-world toys with video gaming. As pretty much everyone has concluded, "this thing is going to print money."

When the game launches, the $75 Starter Set will feature Mr. Incredible, Monster Inc.'s Sulley, and Captain Jack Sparrow. But, how did Disney settle on these characters, especially considering the breadth of IPs at their disposal? We asked John Blackburn, developer Avalanche Software's CEO, about exactly that.

Skylanders franchise reaches $500 million in sales

Skylanders franchise reaches $500 million in sales

Activision has another money-maker, just in case that "Call of Duty" thing stops working for them. The publisher has announced that one of its other tentpole franchises has surpassed half a billion dollars of sales in the US. Including sales of accessory packs and figures, the two Skylanders games have generated over $500 million. According to Activision, that means Skylanders makes more money than Star Wars toys.

Why The Last Story almost didn't come westward

The Last Story has quickly become the biggest game yet for its publisher, XSEED Games, which made its name on importing Japanese cult favorites. But it was a struggle to bring it to the west at all, since concerns about releasing a $50 RPG on a "dead platform" made some people, even inside the company, skeptical of its success.
