Steam Machine video shows off SteamOS

If you were one of the lucky 300, you received a Steam Machine from Valve for beta testing purposes. Corey Nelson happened to be one of the chosen ones, and he's sharing his experiences on YouTube.

A video from Nelson (via CVG) shows SteamOS in action. As evidenced by the video, the operating system doesn't allow you to do much beyond run Steam. The "desktop" is pretty bare-bones at the moment. However, the Steam-on-TV experience looks rather smooth, with the transition from client to game looking quite silky. Take a gander.

SteamOS now available for download

Are you ready to test Valve's new Linux-based operating system? Then you can download the 960MB installer here. Do note that downloads seem to be dying randomly, so you may want to use a download manager to complete.

Also note that Valve advises to "wait until later in 2014... unless you're an intrepid Linux hacker already," suggesting the initial release of SteamOS won't necessarily be mainstream-friendly. Also keep in mind that installing SteamOS will erase everything on your machine.

TF2 update brings new short and two MvM maps

Valve has released a new Team Fortress 2 animated short! Oh, and a big update for the free-to-play FPS too, I guess. That's what the video is about, really. The patch focuses on TF2's co-op Mann vs. Machine mode, bringing two new urban maps and shiny new weapon upgrades, but also adds a new community-made Control Point map.

The Stanley Parable narrator coming to Dota 2

The Stanley Parable narrator coming to Dota 2

"This is the story of a man named Stanley."

While it may be difficult to nail down The Stanley Parable and what exactly the story even is, the narrator is definitely a recognizable aspect of Galactic Cafe's hit game. If you're looking for more from this delightfully British accent, you'll be happy to hear that The Stanley Parable's narrator will soon be available in Dota 2 as a downloadable announcer pack.

Dota 2 patch brings new heroes, coaching, crafting, and Diretide

Valve said it had a "huge" Dota 2 update and gosh golly, it certainly does. Today will bring something for Doters of all skill levels, from coaching tools for newbies to two extra heroes for veterans in search of something new. As everyone likes hats, crafting is in too. And Diretide's back!

The two new heroes are Storm Spirit's siblings brought over from the original DotA mod, the Earth Spirit and Ember Spirit. One's a Strength hero, the other's Agility, and both look mighty fetching. They're so fancy, in fact, that Valve has given Storm a makeover.

Dota 2 Diretide coming soon after Valve admits it 'underestimated' demand

Halloween last year saw Dota 2 heroes out collecting (and stealing) candy, but this year they were stuck with plain old boring murder for macabre entertainment. The Diretide event, it seemed, was not returning. An uncharacteristically candid Valve has explained that it had hoped to launch a "huge update" for Halloween instead but fell short, and is now working to deliver Diretide a little late.

Valve confirms: no exclusive games for SteamOS

Valve was able to launch an entirely new digital distribution platform by making Half-Life 2 exclusive to Steam. With SteamOS around the corner, gamers were curious: would the company do the same and make an exclusive game for their platform? The answer is "no."

Valve's Greg Comer confirmed: "you won't see an exclusive killer app for SteamOS from us. We're not going to be doing that kind of thing."
