As promised, at E3 Epic properly lifted the wraps off its next-generation engine, Unreal Engine 4. While the real-time cinematic teased before is jolly nice and all, the real highlight is a good long look at the tech and tools themselves.

Unreal Engine 4 and Epic's 'responsibility' to push next-gen consoles

Unreal Engine 4 and Epic's 'responsibility' to push next-gen consoles

While corners of the Internet speculate and bicker about the hardware powering the next console generation, Epic last week lifted the wraps off the engine that'll surely power plenty of next-gen games, Unreal Engine 4. Blowing its own trumpet a little, Epic spoke of its "responsibility" to make sure the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony can support the sort of prettiness it's putting out.

Unreal Engine 4 to be much more advanced than Samaritan demo

Unreal Engine 4 to be much more advanced than Samaritan demo

Shacknews had the opportunity to sit down on a private, invite-only press conference with Epic Games. At one point during the presentation, the Unreal Engine 4 logo appeared on the screen. (It's blue now, FYI.) Epic Games' Mark Rein told us that the company was showing off its next-generation engine at Game Developers Conference--but only to developers. The public reveal will happen later this year, Rein reconfirmed.

But what is Unreal Engine 4? And how does it compare to Samaritan, the high-powered Unreal Engine 3 demo that's been shown off for years? "If Samaritan looked like a piece of crap, that's what Unreal Engine 4 would look like," Rein told us.

Epic Games is working on Unreal Engine 4, and may even be ready to debut it this year, according to Epic vice president Mark Rein.

Unreal Development Kit adds Mac support

Unreal Development Kit adds Mac support

Epic's free version of Unreal Engine 3, the Unreal Development Kit, can now happily make games for Apple's shiny aluminium boxes, as Mac support has been added with the September build. Get downloading that here at Shacknews.

This will also herald the arrival of native Mac support in the commercial version of Unreal Engine 3, which should greatly simplify the process of making Mac editions of games, and hopefully make them more common.

Epic boss Mike Capps speaks on industry uncertainty, $1 apps

Epic boss Mike Capps speaks on industry uncertainty, $1 apps

The games industry is presently at "an inflection point," Epic Games president Mike Capps has told Industry Gamers. Uncertain factors including digital distribution, the rise of mobile gaming and a focus on online play has lead the Gears of War 3 developer and Unreal Engine maker to ponder where things might be headed.

"If there's anything that's killing us [in the traditional games business] it's dollar apps," said Capps. "How do you sell someone a $60 game that's really worth it ... They're used to 99 cents. As I said, it's an uncertain time in the industry. But it's an exciting time for whoever picks the right path and wins." Read more »
