Tekken Tag Tournament 2 preview

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 preview

It's been 10 years since the original Tekken Tag Tournament first saw the light of day, but the game has retained a cult following amongst fighting game fans. Namco Bandai now had a follow-up ready, with Tekken Tag Tournament 2 bringing the tag mechanics of the first game to the current generation of consoles. They also have some new tricks to roll out, namely in the form of some new online features.

Tekken Tag Tournament was mostly known for throwing the Tekken storyline out the window and the sequel is no different. This allows for the game to use the full roster of Tekken fighters. Players can welcome back characters like Prototype Jack (Tekken 2), Michelle Chang (Tekken 3), and Alex (everyone's favorite dinosaur with boxing gloves from Tekken 2) to join series favorites Heihachi, Kazuya, and Jin. Overall, the roster will launch with over 50 fighters.

Tekken head says Wii U pad 'distracting' for fighting games

A few developers have spoken about how the Wii U pad can augment their game experiences, but it's not a perfect fit for all games. According to Katsuhiro Harada, head of the Tekken franchise, it could actually cause problems when it comes to fighting games. His team is currently thinking through how to make use of it for Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

Tekken x Street Fighter to remain current-gen game

Tekken x Street Fighter to remain current-gen game

Little is known about Tekken x Street Fighter, Namco Bandai's 3D turn at a mash-up fighter. In fact, it's unclear if any significant work has been done on the game, given the team's focus on Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Although a release is nowhere in sight, Namco Bandai believes it best to release the game on the current generation of consoles.

"There's still a large number of players out there with a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 who are looking forward to the game," Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada said. "So we feel it's probably more relevant to get the title out to them on the current hardware."

Tekken will 'never sell' DLC characters

Tekken will 'never sell' DLC characters

Capcom has been at odds with its fans over its DLC practices. However, although Namco Bandai and Capcom collaborated on Street Fighter x Tekken, the two companies don't quite adopt the same business strategies. Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada has stated he doesn't plan to ever charge for characters.

"This isn’t really directed at Capcom, I have always said this, but I see the characters and their move sets as chess pieces - they are essential items necessary in the game and we would never sell any of those individually."
