BioWare patches SWTOR 1.1 exploit, warns users

As with any online game, BioWare has an ongoing battle to plug newfound exploits in Star Wars: The Old Republic. The latest, found since patch 1.1, let users spawn-camp around turrets in PvP servers. The problem was exacerbated by faction imbalance, giving an advantage to the Imperials for their greater numbers.

BioWare has issued another patch, and has stepped in to dispel some rumors and talk about the exploit, as well as issue a stern warning for those trying to take advantage of the glitch.

First SWTOR update hits Tuesday, includes more high level content

Bioware announced the first substantial content update for Star Wars: the Old Republic, and it's coming in hot. "Rise of the Rakghouls," as it's been named, arrives next Tuesday, January 17. Along with the typical MMO patch fare of balancing tweaks and bug fixes, the update brings with it some sure to be welcome higher level group combat content. This addresses one of the chief complaints of the game's most dedicated players, many of whom have reached the level cap with one or more characters and are hungry for more to do now that they're there.

[UPDATE: BioWare sent over a trailer with a scene of the first contact with the Rakghouls. Check it out after the jump.]

The Old Republic bans issued for loot exploit

BioWare took some criticism this week over bans issued in Star Wars: The Old Republic, leading community manager Stephen Reid to step in and clarify why users had gotten the boot. Reid says that permanent bans were issued to credit farmers, and temporary suspensions were given to players who exploited loot containers in one area.

The Old Republic 1.0.1 patch fixes 'high-priority bugs'

Star Wars: The Old Republic has gotten its first patch, meant to address "high-priority bugs." At the top of the list, players shouldn't see performance issues on Taris, and pending mission rewards should be delivered correctly.

"We're committed to providing the best possible MMO experience," the update says, "and will continue releasing fixes and updates on a regular basis."

Star Wars: The Old Republic has continued its surge of new players after the game's late December release, EA has announced. BioWare considered MMOs of Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones

Are you enjoying your time in Star Wars: The Old Republic, or waiting in line as the case may be? Apparently you could have been waiting in line to enter Gondor or Westeros, among a handful of other worlds BioWare considered MMO-ifying.

Some Star Wars: The Old Republic servers reaching max capacity

Some Star Wars: The Old Republic servers reaching max capacity

Star Wars: The Old Republic is already inching towards maximum capacity on some servers. This has prompted BioWare to warn users to create characters on different servers, unless they don't mind waiting in a long queue line to play.

"We want incoming players to populate lower population servers," community manager Stephen Reid pleaded.

Star Wars: The Old Republic focusing on subscription model 'right now'

Star Wars: The Old Republic focusing on subscription model 'right now'

Star Wars: The Old Republic launches today, complete with a traditional subscription model. Meanwhile, more and more often we're seeing MMOs either launching or switching to a free-to-play model. While TOR creative director James Ohlen doesn't discount that possibility eventually, he says "right now" the company is committed to the subscription.

"I don't know what's going to happen in the future," Ohlen said, "but right now, we're very much focused on making it a subscription game."

Star Wars: The Old Republic first look

Star Wars: The Old Republic first look

Star Wars: The Old Republic finally opens its virtual doors to everyone this week. I've already made my way through the first ten levels of gameplay as a Jedi Consular, though, for some early impressions. Given the pedigree of the developer, muscle of the publisher, and a stupendous IP, The Old Republic might be the first MMO that stands a chance of being truly competitive with World of Warcraft. It's far too early to give anything resembling a final verdict on such a massive game, but my initial experiences with it yielded some positive surprises.
