Final Fantasy 7 remake would take longer than FF13 trilogy combined, says producer

Square Enix has heard fans requesting a remake of Final Fantasy 7, but has explained some of its hesitance to take on the project. Now that Lightning Returns has wrapped up the FF13 saga, producer Yoshinori Kitase has this time commented on just how time-consuming it would be to recreate FF7.

Lightning Returns closes the book on the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy, bringing it all to a satisfying conclusion. But we might not have seen the last of Lightning herself, as director Motomu Toriyama says her popularity may well lead to some cameos.

Watch the first mission of Thief

Watch the first mission of Thief

The upcoming Thief reboot is almost upon us. The game's already gone gold as it preps for a release in less than two weeks. If you're still on the fence, perhaps watching a complete mission being played will help you decide if Eidos Montreal is able to carry on the legacy of the series.

The "unedited, uncommented" playthrough has the new Garrett trying to make his way back to his hideout. There's a jewelry store that he stumbles upon... and well, the game is named Thief.

Agent 47 is about to take his killer-for-hire skills to a whole new platform, as Square Enix has officially announced the rumored Hitman-themed mobile turn-based strategy game from series developer IO Interactive called Hitman GO. Thief trailer introduces the Thief Taker General

Thief trailer introduces the Thief Taker General

For a master thief like Garrett, there are few obstacles that can't be bypassed or, in some cases, avoided entirely. But as the latest and final 'Stories from the City' trailer for Thief shows, all that is about to change. The Thief Taker General has no sympathy for those who make their living through theft and thus is hell bent on bringing Garrett's crime spree to a permanent end.

Play Primer: Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is out today, the third and final game in what we never would have expected to become a trilogy. Jumping in could be daunting even for those who played the prior games, so I've outlined a few things you might want to know before you get started. For more detail on what I thought of Lightning Returns, check out the Shacknews review.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII review: striking distance

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII review: striking distance

After two games of a beautifully designed battle system buried underneath poor level design and an incomprehensible plot, Lightning Returns feels like the game this series was always meant to be. It refines what worked in those previous installments, and sheds nearly everything that was weighing it down. It's fast-paced, action-focused, and to my pleasant surprise, offers relatable character motivations and a digestible story. The result doesn't always hit its mark, but it comes closer than the series has in years.

Bravely Default review: a whole new fantasy

Bravely Default review: a whole new fantasy

While Final Fantasy explores new gameplay conventions, Square Enix still knows how to make a classic turn-based JRPG. Bravely Default may not be an entry in the company's storied franchise, but it's built in the same vein as classic turn-based RPGs, all while modernizing the genre to give players a lot more variety along the way.

The story is fairly by-the-numbers, following a merry band of four characters, each brought together by happenstance. Tiz is the last survivor of his village, which was swallowed up by darkness. Agnes, vestal of the wind, is the key to helping restore the world, but is hunted down by the Eternian Council of Six all throughout the story. They're soon joined by an amnesiac Cassanova named Ringabel (try not to groan too loudly over that pun) and a former Eternian warrior named Edea. They band together to restore the world by helping activate the four elemental crystals scattered about. It's a story that would resonate with just about any Final Fantasy fan, crystals and all.

Square Enix cites Final Fantasy 14 in profitable financial report

Square Enix cites Final Fantasy 14 in profitable financial report

It wasn't too long ago that Final Fantasy 14 was considered such an embarrassment for Square Enix that it scrapped it for a much-publicized revamp. The publisher's CEO apologized, the new creative director said it was a mistake to launch in that state--it was a whole big messy thing, you might remember. But what a difference a relaunch makes. Square Enix's recent earnings statement shows the company is profitable again, and it mentions sales of A Realm Reborn as a factor.

Murdered: Soul Suspect confirmed for PS4

When an Xbox One version of Murdered: Soul Suspect was announced yesterday, publisher Square Enix was a little coy about whether Airtight Games' ghost detective game might haunt PlayStation 4. "Chase me, chase me!" it seemed to giggle. Well, lo and behold, here we are now, with news that it is indeed coming to PS4 too. What an exciting exclusivity period that was.
