H1Z1 promises 'persistent' zombie-infected worlds

As promised, Sony Online Entertainment has detailed its upcoming zombie MMO, H1Z1. Set fifteen years after a deadly virus outbreak, the free-to-play online game will take place in SOE's vision of America--starting with an "anywhere" town in Middle America. From there, the game will expand across cities and desolate places. "Our focus is building a sandbox style of gameplay where players can build shelters out of resources in the world. They can even work together to make amazing fortresses complete with weaponry to help defend against both the Infected and other players," SOE president John Smedley said.

PlanetSide 2 creative director talks 2014 and answers Chatty questions

PlanetSide 2 creative director talks 2014 and answers Chatty questions

Sony Online Entertainment's MMOFPS, PlanetSide 2, had a very strong 2013. With more than 6 million players joining in the Auraxian War, SOE believes that the game will only get bigger in 2014, as the game is set to debut gobs of new content, along with the long-anticipated PlayStation 4 version.

SOE has been keeping fans up-to-date on their game through their own forums, as well as other websites, such as Reddit. However, Shacknews has quite a PlanetSide 2 following of its own. We reached out to the game's creative director, Matt Higby, to ask about the developer's approach to fan feedback, difficulties with the PS4 version, and pitch a number of questions from our own Shacknews Chatty community.

EverQuest Next Landmark alpha launches today, and we've played it

EverQuest Next Landmark alpha launches today, and we've played it

EverQuest Next has been billed as Sony Online Entertainment's next-generation, fully destructible MMO, with EQN Landmark promising an in-game building experience unlike any other. To help usher in the Year of EverQuest, EQN Landmark's alpha will open its doors tonight to a number of devoted fans and creative minds. Shacknews was given the opportunity to try out the Landmark alpha and, while it has a number of technical issues, it shows a unique ambition with the potential to take MMORPGs to new heights.

Just as the early videos implied, Landmark's building tool proved user-friendly and easy to use. The bread and butter is in the add and delete tools, along with the selection tools. Players gather resources by picking away at just about anything in the world with their trusty pickaxe, gathering dirt, wood, metal, and other elements across different environments. In my time with the game, all players started off across a barren desert before branching out towards mountainous terrain and a vast forest region.
