Heroes of Newerth getting Samuel L. Jackson announcer pack

With so many MOBAs on the market, how do you differentiate? If you can't be the biggest or have a legacy to build off of, you can at least be the one that has actor Samuel L. Jackson. Heroes of Newerth has snagged that distinction for itself.

Heroes of Newerth dev announces new MOBA, Strife

Heroes of Newerth was once the most the main alternative to League of Legends, as the most faithful update of the original DotA mod. Then Valve swaggered in and Dota 2 muscled HoN out.

S2 Games isn't giving up on Dote 'em ups, though, and is coming back with Strife. Described as a "second generation" MOBA, it'll be free-to-play on PC.

Heroes of Newerth hacked

A naughty hacker has busted into the database of S2's Heroes of Newerth, gaining access to account login information. Heroes of Newerth making all heroes free

The evolution of Heroes of Newerth's business model has taken another step. It launched as a regular paid game in May 2010, then in July 2011 switched to a free-to-play model where players could only use a small rotating selection of heroes, and had to pay for others. From today, everyone will be able to play every character, all the time.

Heroes of Newerth 'Mid Wars' mode incoming

Evolution is a slow progress, as demonstrated by the MOBA genre--that's Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, or 'DotA clone,' as it's known on the streets. Most early commercial forays into the genre simply recreated the map layout of the initial Warcraft III mod, but Heroes of Newerth is at least putting a twist on that old chestnut. Inspired by an informal mode played by Newerthlings, S2 Games has put together an official 'all-mid' map, stripping it down for a team-fight-o-rama.

Heroes of Newerth goes free-to-play

Developer S2 Games is joining the growing free-to-play trend with its DotA-esque Heroes of Newerth. "With the transition to free-to-play we’re opening HoN up to new audiences as our players can now easily introduce the game to their friends," S2 Games CEO Marc DeForest said in a press release.

The developer promises "the game mechanics and style of play will remain intact," and detailed how the community will evolve based on today's decision.
