Watch the 20th anniversary of id Software panel

For two decades, developer id Software has pushed the limits of video game design and opened doors to a wave of new games in a genre they helped create.

At QuakeCon 2011, members of the id Software team discussed the studio's history. Now, the video from that panel has been released for those unable to attend the event to watch.

id's John Carmack answers questions at QuakeCon 2011

All ninety minutes of John Carmack's QuakeCon 2011 'question and answer" session have appeared online, giving those not lucky enough to attend an opportunity to see the legendary designer discuss the finer elements of game creation.

A wide range of topics were discussed, but few points were as well received as Carmack's announcement regarding dedicated server support. "We actually have marching orders that future games will have dedicated servers," Carmack told the delighted QuakeCon crowd.

For Rage, the company's upcoming game, dedicated servers are not included, because the team's focus is on its single-player experience. Carmack did note, however, that based on community support, adding dedicated servers to the game's multiplayer modes is "not off the table."

Team Fortress 2 items celebrate QuakeCon 2011

Team Fortress 2 items celebrate QuakeCon 2011

Valve wants the share the QuakeCon love with Team Fortress 2 players. As part of the QuakeCon sale on Steam, each of the classes--soldier, engineer, heavy, and sniper--gets a new toy inspired by Bethesda-related titles.

These items are all bonuses, awarded for either owning or pre-ordering the specific they're drawn from. If any of them sound like things you'd like to add to your Team Fortress 2 player, act quick. QuakeCon ends this Sunday, and the promotion cuts off Monday morning, August 8 at 10am PDT. Sorry, no hats; however, there is an "Anger hood" from Brink and an "Iron helmet" from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I guess that sort of counts.

Watch id's John Carmack talk Rage in QuakeCon keynote address

At QuakeCon 2011, John Carmack, co-founder of id Software and perhaps better known as the programming mastermind behind its game engines, delivered his annual keynote address. With the game nearly finished and playable on the show floor, he focused his attention on Rage. Calling the game, "the most enjoyable id game, from my perspective, that we've ever made," Carmack went into some details about the long road its development took.

Carmack also talks about developing the game for multiple platforms, and some of the considerations that had to be made for consoles that are sure to rankle PC players. He takes questions in the later part of the address but don't get hopes up; another year passes without anything new on Doom 4.
