This weekend gets confirmed with a powerful show that rocks from start to finish. Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, Lara Croft: Guardian of Light, Monday Night Combat, and a QuakeCon report get the party started on the right foot in Whatcha' Been Playin? Your thoughts on maturity in games and balancing difficulty with reward lead off the Warning before the question of whether it's okay to leave games unfinished finally gets discussed. Gamecom announcements alone could fill the Front Page but there's also a quick review of the July NPD sales figures and, of course, Jeff tops it off with a little excitement for Bioshock Infinite.

Right before QuakeCon 2010, id Software announced that Quake Live, it's free-to-play, browser-launched version of Quake III Arena, had left beta and would be getting two paid plans with additional content.
As for the free-to-play Quake Live, it's going to stay exactly the same, detailed here in a statement by Steve Nix, director of digital platforms at id Software, released to Shacknews prior to QuakeCon 2010. Read more »

Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas makes an immediate impression: this is more Fallout. It's a good thing. The tweaks made to the Fallout 3 formula--detailed here by Mr. Faylor at E3 2010--definitely add a lot to the game. While some of the tweaks are born out of the PC modding scene for the game, all of them present more to the player.

Brink has come a long way since I last saw it at QuakeCon 2009. Sadly, I missed it on E3 2010, but I finally got a chance to jump into a session with three other human players and friendly bots against a gang of AI opponents on Container City, the map that can be seen in this (old) trailer below:

The Rage presentation at QuakeCon 2010 featured live playthroughs of the same content across all three platforms: PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. While the content was not new--Chris Faylor's E3 2010 preview should sum it up nicely--the differences in the platforms are minimal.
First of all, all three platforms ran at a solid 60 frames-per-second without hitching even during intense action. Now, obviously, the PC version looked the best, but the differences aren't that major. Had the PC version not been running in between the two console versions, I would have been completely satisfied with the look of the console versions. Read more »

At the conclusion of the Rage presentation at QuakeCon 2010, id Software creative director Tim Wilits announced that Rage would ship on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on September 13, 2011 in the US and two days later in Europe.
While id Software has always been a "when its done" company, Tim promised that Rage would hit this release date and that the launch would be the "biggest, coolest, and most badass launch possible." Read more »

During John Carmack's QuakeCon 2010 keynote address and Q&A session, he expressed thoughts and analysis based upon various gaming trends and technologies.
On 3D displays: Carmack is not a fan of 3D displays for actual 3D. While he does see some technical benefits to higher refresh rates, he remains "dubious about the real value to the consumer on 3D." Read more »

During John Carmack's annual keynote address at QuakeCon 2010, he showed off a real-time demo of a version of the Rage engine running at 60 frames-per-second on the iPhone 4. It was shown off on large screens via AV cable output and looked impressive, even blown up to a size much larger than an iPhone display.
Carmack claims to have this engine up and running on the original iPhone, but may re-think backwards compatibility based on a quick straw poll of audience members that are still using original devices (it was 2). Read more »

Those of you hoping for details on id Software's Doom 4 project from this year's QuakeCon 2010, myself included, are going to be waiting a bit longer. Unfortunately, Doom 4 will not be shown at this year's event even though the company promised to show off the game last year.
The bad news came as Todd Hollenshead welcomed everybody to the event prior to John Carmack's keynote address. Hollenshead quickly apologized, explaining that the company wants to put more work into the Doom 4 project before it is revealed. Read more »
