Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons preview: a self-cooperative fairy tale

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons preview: a self-cooperative fairy tale

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is Starbreeze Studio's next game, a downloadable title that's aiming to do some pretty clever things when it comes to in-game storytelling. The project was conceived by award-winning Swedish filmmaker Josef Fares, and tells the tale of a couple of young siblings who embark on a quest to find a cure for their ailing father. Fares, who is serving as both game and creative director on the project, stopped by to demonstrate an early build of the game last month, which turns out to be a visually-impressive, creative, and surprisingly ambitious adventure game.

All Zombies Must Die preview

All Zombies Must Die preview

UK-based developer Doublesix is poised to deliver their new title, an "arcade-RPG," dubbed All Zombies Must Die this fall, and I had a chance to see the game in action last week. According to lead designer David Dow, All Zombies Must Die is both similar to, and also a robust departure from, their previous arena-based shooter, Burn Zombie Burn.

Limbo on PS3 July 19th, Steam August 2nd

That didn't take long. Just one week after the ports were announced, Playdead has announced release dates for the upcoming PS3 and PC versions of Limbo. The PSN version will arrive just in time for the game's first birthday. Playdead's critically-acclaimed platformer will be available on the PlayStation Network in the US on July 19th. A European release will follow on July 20th. (A Japanese release is TBA.)

PC gamers will have to wait just a little bit longer, with a worldwide launch on Steam on August 2nd. Dino Patti, CEO of Playdead, told me that these upcoming ports will feature a "little extra secret." What could it be? Read more »

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair explores PS3 this summer

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair explores PS3 this summer

Last year's ill-received Xbox Live Summer of Arcade title, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, is finally coming to PlayStation 3. The 2D multiplayer title has up to six players jointly exploring maps inspired by the worlds of the various handheld Castlevania games--Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia. The visuals are also, as evidenced by the screen above, more than a little "inspired" by the GBA/DS games.

New to the PS3 version is a local 4 player co-op mode, in addition to the 6 player online mode. The "Beauty, Desire, Situation Dire" Map pack, along with the Julius Belmont and Yoko Belnades characters are also included with the game. The included DLC currently has a combined value of 880 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live Marketplace, or $11. Unfortunately, it seems that all the additional DLC--4 characters, 4 stages, and 2 music packs--will be sold separately. (The extra content currently totals 2240 Microsoft Points, or $28.) Limbo rated for PS3 in Asia

Playdead's well-reviewed moody Xbox Live hit, Limbo, may be coming to PS3. GameSetWatch has discovered a listing for a PS3 version of the game on the Korean Rating Board. Unsurprisingly, the game received a Mature rating. More surprising is the publisher attached to the port: Sony Computer Entertainment Korea. (Microsoft published the Xbox 360 version of the game.)

This isn't the first time a PS3 version of Limbo appeared on a ratings board. Last year, the ESRB rated Limbo for both PS3 and PC, which the developer claimed was simply a mistake. Read more »

Dead Block stumbles onto Xbox 360 & PS3 this July

Digital Reality's zombie-infected tower defense game is coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network next month. Dead Block will be available first on Xbox Live on July 6th, for 800 Microsoft Points. It will release on PlayStation Network two weeks later on July 20th, for $9.99.

The Unreal Engine-powered game lets you play as one of three survivors: a boy scout, construction worker, and a meter maid. Dead Block combines your run o' the mill zombie shooting with the ability to construct a variety of trap-enabled doors. If that doesn't quite make sense to you, a newly released gameplay video showcases the kinds of weapons you'll have at your disposal: Read more »

PlayStation Move Ape Escape nets July release

PlayStation Move Ape Escape nets July release

The not-so-cleverly-named PlayStation Move Ape Escape is finally available ... to PS3 owners in Europe. Those of you in North America will have to wait until July 5th to download the PlayStation Network-exclusive continuation of the Ape Escape franchise.

The game will have you moving on rails, shooting bananas at monkeys in an attempt to bag them with your virtual net. If you couldn't tell by the title, the game utilizes PlayStation Move, so you'll have to swing your arms to catch the rascally simians. If you want a better feel for the game, a free demo will be available on June 28th.

E3 2011: PixelJunk SideScroller

E3 2011: PixelJunk SideScroller

QUICKTAKE: PixelJunk Shooter gets another spin-off. Based off the secret ending to PixelJunk Shooter 2, SideScroller is a straightforward old-school shoot 'em up with a funky visual style, and remixed audio tracks from High Frequency Bandwidth.

THE DEMO: It may look like PixelJunk Shooter. In fact, in many ways, it is the same game. The demo we saw featured many of the same gameplay elements, such as the ship's unique way of interacting with fluids. Even the spin attack is back, letting you quickly collect points. However, there's one key difference between Shooter and Sidescroller: in this new game, you can't use the right analog stick. You shoot forward, and that's it. Read more »

Papo & Yo coming to PS3

Papo & Yo coming to PS3

Yet another charming indie game is heading to the PlayStation Network. Papo & Yo is the first title from Minority, a newly formed studio based in Montreal. The downloadable title will be a PS3 exclusive, funded in part with Sony's Pub Fund. SOE's Justin Cooney explained the decision to fund the game: “The Minority team and its debut title is a representation of the kind of industry innovators we’re looking for, and we’re all very excited to see the final product in action!”

Creative Director Vander Caballero explained that the game is inspired by his desire "to tell the story of my childhood ... about myself and my father, a good man but also an evil one." The troubled relationship between Caballero and his father is embodied by the game's hero, Quico, and his Monster protector. "But Monster is addicted to frogs, and when he eats them he is transformed into an evil killing machine." The story is a rather straightforward metaphor for Caballero's alcoholic and drug abusing father. "The emotional core of this game is ultimately a fable about my relationship with my father," Caballero told the PlayStation.Blog. Read more »

Nimbus+ coming to PS3, original PC game to receive enhancements

Nimbus is a little-known indie racing-puzzle game that's managed to make a name for itself on Steam. So what's next for developer Noumenon? An enhanced port of the game for PS3.

Nimbus will arrive on PlayStation Network with new content and "improvements" that weren't finished in time for the PC version. "Exactly what these improvements will be isn't entirely set in stone yet," the developer admits. But, the PS3 version is receiving "as much additional development time as the PC version," so it's likely the changes will be quite significant. No wonder the port is also receiving a new title: Nimbus+. Read more »
