Gran Turismo 5 is actually going to be released next week... we think! Hopefully, you'll be able to pick up a copy next week. Beyond that, there's Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom and Splatterhouse, and that Michael Jackson game. Oh, and Donkey Kong Country Kong actually comes out tomorrow. Sunday releases confuse our system sometimes.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog has mined some data and come up with a staggering comparison between the amount of games available on the iOS platform versus all of the games combined from 19 consoles since the NES and SEGA Master System.
By their numbers, the iOS platform has had an estimated 32,438 games that have been released, while the consoles examined account for an estimated 17,150 games. Those platforms are: NES, Master System, Genesis, SNES, PSX, N64, Saturn, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, XNA, Xbox Live Arcade, Gameboy, GBA, DS, and PSP. Read more »

The nominees for Spike's 2010 Video Game Awards have been announced and are unsurprisingly a list of the biggest games of the year across all categories.
The VGA's will be aired on Saturday, December 11 at 8PM EST on SpikeTV and will probably feature a lot of celebrities talking about games in some form or another. There should be some major game announcements, as well, with BioWare already confirming that it will announce a new game at the show. Read more »

Sony Corporation has issued its earnings report for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010, revealing that the company's "Networked Products and Services" division--which includes the PlayStation family, alongside PC products and other connected devices--continued to see growth.
According to the report, when combined, the division was responsible for a ¥6.9 billion ($85.4 million) operating profit compared to a ¥59 billion ($730.7M) loss for the same period last year. However, sales specific to the games industry were down to ¥171 billion ($2.1 billion) this year, versus ¥196 ($2.4B) the year before. Read more »

According to SharesPost Inc., which handles trades for shares of privately held companies, FarmVille creator Zynga has been valued at an estimated $5.51 billion. This tops Electronic Arts' $5.22 billion valuation as calculated by its NASDAQ stock price (via Bloomberg).
Keep in mind that Zynga is not a publicly traded company and this valuation is based upon what people are spending for shares or stake in the company. This is similar to when Microsoft dropped $240 million into Facebook for a 1.6 percent stake in the social network, valuing Facebook at $15 billion. Read more »

Ten years ago, on this very day, the PlayStation 2 was released in stores across North America. Over the years, its integrated DVD technology and software library have made it a staple in homes across the globe--selling, according to Sony, 146 million units to date.
As much as we loved the system, our real memories come from the discs spinning in our PS2 DVD drive. And with a library that has ballooned to 2,000 titles since that fateful day on October 26, 2000, we have a lot of memories to share. Read more »

The ECA has announced plans for a free speech rally at the US Supreme Court in Washington D.C. as part of its continuing campaign to raise awareness of the threat posed to First Amendment protection for videogames by the potential outcome in Schwarzenegger v. EMA. The rally is scheduled to take place Tuesday, November 2 prior to the 9am EST opening of the hearing in which oral arguments will be heard in the case.

Although the industry is quick to usher in the digital era, EA Sports boss Peter Moore still believes the FIFA brand will live on in disc form over the next half decade. Speaking with MCV, Moore described a scenario where the FIFA game brand could eventually become something delivered to users on a digital platform, but that era is still far off for the global market. The NPD Group will be releasing its Games Industry: Total Consumer Spend report shortly, which details the $3.7 billion spent on retail games in the US in the first half of 2010.
The report also shows that between $2.6 and $2.9 billion was spent on "used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full game downloads, social network games, downloadable content, and mobile game apps." Read more »

Electronic Arts has declared FIFA Soccer 11, the latest entry in its long-running ball-kicking franchise, to be "the fastest selling sports game ever" after selling through an estimated 2.6 million copies at retail worldwide following its launch last week.
Strutting around like cock of the walk, EA further estimates retail sales of over $150 million and a sell-through rate 29% higher than that of FIFA Soccer 10--which it had previously declared "the fastest-selling sports videogame in the world," back in December 2009. Read more »
