MechWarrior Online aiming for 12v12

Piranha's free-to-play stompy robot game MechWarrior Online is aiming to offer multiplayer mech melee in size 12v12, assuming it can deliver a "solid play experience" at that scale. MechWarrior Online to use CryEngine 3

MechWarrior Online to use CryEngine 3

Piranha Games' upcoming MechWarrior Online may be a free-to-play game, but it promises not to look cheap. The company has licensed the highly-regarded CryEngine 3 to power the online game, and is one of "over 20" F2P games currently in development using Crytek's engine.

"It is definitely the best choice for us," Piranha Games president Russ Bullock said in a press release. "Both the character animation pipeline with the procedurally and physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly."

MechWarrior Online concept art reveals evolution of 'Atlas'

MechWarrior Online concept art reveals evolution of 'Atlas'

In a lengthy interview on the game's official website, MechWarrior Online developer Alex Iglesias details his love for all things mechs and his aversion to furries.

"With certain Mechs it's a small matter of adjusting some proportions, or making certain fixes so that the art matches the specs/gameplay, with others, it's nearly a complete overhaul of the design," Iglesias wrote regarding his work redesigning classic mechs for the upcoming free-to-play title. "Through all of this, I also try to respect the years worth of art for those designs that came before mine."

MechWarrior Online not 'Pay-2-Win'

MechWarrior Online not 'Pay-2-Win'

MechWarrior Online developer Piranha Games has insisted that the mech combat action-sim won't be "pay-2-win," provocatively explaining "why you want MechWarrior Online to be free-to-play." Piranha envisions a PC game which can track and quickly respond to problems, unbound by "content delivery limitations of a console platform."

The developer promises that the F2P model will enable live metrics, iterating updates quickly, and easily testing new content with players.

MechWarrior reboot was derailed by Microsoft blocking PS3

MechWarrior reboot was derailed by Microsoft blocking PS3

The initial incarnation of Piranha Games' MechWarrior reboot, which was revealed yesterday to have become the free-to-play PC exclusive MechWarrior Online, was stymied by "a Microsoft restriction" blocking a PlayStation 3 edition. This, according to Piranha, played a big part in publishers not wanting to pick the game up. Do remember there's a happy ending, though.
