Molyneux: Milo killed because industry isn't 'ready' for such emotions

Molyneux: Milo killed because industry isn't 'ready' for such emotions

Perhaps the most interesting use for the Xbox 360's Kinect controller was Lionhead Studios' virtual child simulator Milo and Kate, though a lot of questions lingered over it. We first met the young lad Milo in 2009, carefree and innocent as he chatted with the player, but the project slipped out of sight and was eventually shelved. This, Peter Molyneux has said, is because the industry simply isn't ready for a such game built around forming an emotional bond.

Lionhead's Milo "Product" for Kinect Still in Development, Not Out This Year

Earlier today the fate of Lionhead Studios' Project Milo appeared to be sealed when Australia-based ABC "Good Game" posted a clip of Xbox product director Aaron Greenberg saying definitively that the virtual child would not be brought to "market.""Last year we revealed the Project Natal technology and showed a bunch of technology demos as part of that," Greenberg said in the ABC video (skip to 0:40). "Right now it's not a game that we're planning to bring to market," he added. Today, however, Greenberg clarified his statements via Twitter saying, "Project Milo absolutely continues in development at Lionhead Studios, it is just not a product we plan to bring to market this holiday."

When pressed on Kinect functionality in Fable III during an E3 2010 roundtable discussion with journalists, Lionhead founder Peter Molyneux said there was a "really, really good reason why I can't talk about [Kinect functionality] and why I'm not allowed to talk about that. It's a very similar reason as to why I'm not talking about Milo." When word that Project Milo had been relegated to "tech demo" status began appearing online, Lionhead Studios' Sam Van Tilburgh tweeted a photo he dubbed "Team Milo." Read more »

The Peter Molyneux Interview, Part 1: From Fable 2 to Connect Four

Related Topics – Fable 2, Interview, Peter Molyneux

It's funny how things work out sometimes.

During last month's Game Developers Conference, my beloved co-worker Nick Breckon decided to play a little prank on me. In short, he convinced me that renowned game designer Peter Molyneux, who is currently wrapping up production on Fable 2 (X360), wanted to do an interview.

Of course, there were a few stipulations, as relayed by Shacker Abigail Sponge, playing a convincing representative from Lionhead. At first they were mostly innocent requests, but they soon grew increasingly eccentric, to the point where I was expected to call him Sir Molyneux, wear a pink shirt that complemented my brown eyes, and polish up on my Connect Four skills. Peter Molyneux: PC Gaming Turning Casual, Innovation Stifled by Big Budget Productions

Related Topics – PC Gaming, PC, Peter Molyneux

In an interview today with Shacknews, Lionhead chief Peter Molyneux labeled the PC gaming industry as being in a state of reform, while saying that innovation is being pushed aside in favor of safe projects due to mounting production costs.

"I think the PC is just reinventing itself," said Molyneux. "It's being owned more and more by casual gamers, who are playing games from a variety of sites. They are really under the radar at the moment, but there's.. an awful lot of people playing Flash games." Read more »

GDC 08: Molyneux Talks Fable 2

Related Topics – Fable 2, Peter Molyneux, GDC, GDC 08

"I really love LEGO Star Wars," said Lionhead designer Peter Molyneux during his GDC lecture this afternoon.

An unlikely comment from a man involved in complex, high-concept titles, but easily explainable: cooperative play in his studio's upcoming RPG Fable 2 was inspired by the Traveller's Tales' series, featuring a single-screen co-op system for both players.

Molyneux then dropped a few more nuggets of information on the co-op gameplay. When another player is brought into your world, you have the power of deciding what percentage of experience someone recieves from combat. You can even hire your co-op partners on as henchmen, giving them no experience but compensating them monetarily. Read more »

Molyneux: PC Gaming Deflates, Reiterates

Related Topics – PC Gaming, Peter Molyneux

Echoing comments made last week by Epic designer Cliff Belszinski, Lionhead chief Peter Molyneux expressed frustration today at what he feels is an increasingly vapid PC gaming market.

"The Sims and World of Warcraft [are] sucking all the air out of the PC market. It's just incredible," said Molyneux to GamesIndustry.biz. "I think it's a huge tragedy. The weird thing is everyone's got a PC, they're just not buying software for it." Read more »
