Next week brings oodles of new games, including bug-squisher Earth Defense Force 2025, town-builder Banished, the next-gen versions of jumper Rayman, murder-y jumper Strider, ape simulator Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and an Early Access release for mankind-destroyer Plauge Inc: Evolved on PC. Oh, and a new Dreamcast game.

Free-to-play Rusty's Real Deal Baseball announced for 3DS

Today during its Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced a new 3DS game that packages baseball into a series of mini-games with a unique take on free-to-play. Titled Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, the game will offer actual discounts by haggling in the game. It’s set to release this April.

Next week will find see the end of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, when Lightning Returns launches on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Other new releases include Llamasoft's TxK, the Xbox 360 edition of World of Tanks, Far Cry Classic, Metal Slug 3 for PC, and an Early Access version of Dead State.

Shovel Knight uses 3DS StreetPass for five-second battles

Shovel Knight fully embraces its retro aesthetic, but the upcoming platformer from Yacht Club Games will also feature a number of modern elements, notably taking advantage of Nintendo systems' exclusive features. The Wii U will give Miiverse users a chance to help other Shovel Knight players other out, while 3DS players can duke it out using StreetPass for five-second duels against other chivalrous knights.

Nintendo considering mergers and acquisitions, says president

Nintendo spent some time last week explaining its revised strategies, following a rough year for the company. Among those were exploring mobile, streamlining its existing products, and even launching an initiative focused on "quality of life" products. Even with all those gears turning, though, mergers and acquisitions are a possibility.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate hits 3DS in early 2015

Monster Hunter 4 has been out in Japan since September 2013, so when's it coming westward? Never, is the answer. However, we will see the revamped version Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, which Capcom announced over the weekend will arrive "early 2015" in North America. Series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto described 4 Ultimate (or 4G, as it's called in Japan) as "the biggest leap forward ever" for the action-RPG series.

We'll see Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for next-gen consoles, the wriggly Octodad: Dadliest Catch, dogfighting FPS Strike Vector, the official launch of Double Fine's Broken Age, home defense 'em up The Castle Doctrine, and oodles more.

Shovel Knight digs up a March 31 release date

Yacht Club Games is ready to dispense some medieval justice with a mighty thrust of their trusty shovel. The old-school throwback platformer, Shovel Knight, now has a release date and will dig into PC, Wii U, and 3DS on March 31.

Shovel Knight tells the tale of a noble knight trained in the art of the ShovelBlade, who ventures out to overcome the Evil Enchantress and save his love from her sinister clutches. The game was originally aiming to arrive before the end of 2013, which the folks at Yacht Club fully acknowledge.

Nintendo 3DS software sales up 45% in 2013

Nintendo has boasted of a successful 2013 for the 3DS today. It tallied game sales for the year at 16 million across retail and the eShop, a 45% increase over the 2012 total. Though it didn't share specific hardware sales numbers, it did note that the lifetime sales of the handheld system passed somewhere beyond 11.5 million systems in the United States alone.

Pokemon Bank delayed by Nintendo Network downtime

The flood of people turning on their shiny new Wii Us and 3DSs at Christmas made Nintendo's online network struggle, and the company ultimately took it down for a spot of maintenance. Unfortunately, this hiccup has also delayed the launch of the Pokémon Bank and Poké Transfer apps, which were supposed to launch on December 27.
