Gotham City Impostors beta invites going out

Some lucky chumps are getting early access to a hotly anticipated Batman game. No, the other one. Beta invites are going out for next year's Gotham City Impostors, the multiplayer game that bizarrely pays homage to Batman by dressing up like him and using an arsenal of guns. The first wave of invites has been sent, and the actual beta proper is supposed to start in the coming weeks.

Gotham City Impostors gameplay trailer pits bats versus laughs

The latest gameplay trailer for Monolith's upcoming Gotham City Impostors gives players a good look at the bevy of wacky weaponry at the disposal of fake Batmen and Jokers.

The $15, downloadable title is scheduled to launch in winter 2012 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Before that, however, the game will get a closed beta, which fake superheroes and/or villains can sign up for now.

Gotham City Impostors closed beta sign-ups available

Gotham City Impostors closed beta sign-ups available

We don't blame you for being confused when Monolith revealed a new game that included the words "Batman," "multiplayer," and "shooter" in the announcement. The entire idea sounded a little like an April Fools' gag.

Monolith, however, are welcoming the suspicion and hope to show off what Gotham City Impostors is all about in a PC-only, closed beta.

Gotham City Imposters trailer shows an appropriate fear of Batman

Gotham City Imposters trailer shows an appropriate fear of Batman

It should be perfectly clear by now that while Gotham City Imposters pays homage to the Batman mythos, it's at a surface level at best. The idea of Batman-styled vigilantes carrying guns is strange enough, but if an all-out gang war actually were going on in Gotham, one would expect Batman to brutalize/arrest both groups, even if one is his fan club. So it's nice to see the new 'Cinematic' trailer, which implies just that.

Fox Interactive Entering 21st Century?

Related Topics – Monolith, Simpsons, Fox Interactive

Rupert Murdoch wants desperately to be hip with the kids, and to increase profits for his News Corporation conglomerate in the process. MCV is reporting that News Corp. subsidiary 20th Century Fox is looking to get back into the video game industry by relaunching its long-defunct Fox Interactive publishing division. Formed in 1996, Fox Interactive typically published games based on Fox properties such as Die Hard Trilogy, Aliens Versus Predator, and The Simpsons: Hit & Run. Fox also dabbled in a few original titles, including Monolith's No One Lives Forever series, as well as Argonaut Software's Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. The label has been dormant since 2003. The move is seen as part of a two-pronged approach to the lucrative gaming industry, with News Corporation's MySpace web portal having recently signed Oberon Media to provide titles for its MySpace Games service. In the realm of video game journalism, News Corp. purchased IGN/GameSpy in 2005, which has since become a division of Fox Interactive Media--not to be confused with Fox Interactive, or Fox International, or Fox Intergalactic Domination.
