Super Mario 64 influenced by Croc prototype, claims Argonaut founder

Super Mario 64 is one of the most influential games of the 3D era, having established 3D platforming mechanics that have endured well into current generations. According to Argonaut founder Jez San, one of the creators of the original Star Fox, Mario's venture into three dimensions owes some of its identity to Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, which released roughly a year later. Huh?

New Super Mario Bros 2 review: a cash-in

New Super Mario Bros 2 review: a cash-in

It's amazing that after 25 years, Mario is not only still relevant, but a dominant force in gaming. While he's starred in countless platformers, we've never tired of them because each new title brought with it surprising innovations. Last year's Super Mario 3D Land, for example, remains one of the only games on the 3DS to justify turning the 3DS depth slider on. Unfortunately, New Super Mario Bros 2 fails to live up to its name; it brings nothing new to the table. By failing to innovate, NSMB2 is easily the stalest game in the mainline Mario franchise.

3DS and Wii U retail games to be downloadable, beginning with New Super Mario Bros. 2

As expected, Nintendo plans on selling retail games digitally through the Nintendo Network. The first first-party game to be available at both retail and on the eShop will be New Super Mario Bros. 2, scheduled for release in August. And that will be just the beginning. "Starting from this software, the company will offer the software titles that Nintendo itself publishes in both packaged and digital download formats so that our consumers can choose the way to purchase them," the company announced at its most recent investors' meeting.

New Super Mario Bros 2 coming to 3DS in August

New Super Mario Bros 2 coming to 3DS in August

Nintendo has unveiled the identity of its secret 2D Mario game for 3DS. It's New Super Mario Bros 2. (Although it's technically the third game in the New Super Mario Bros franchise...) Once again, Tanooki suits are all the rage, as seen in the first screenshot for the upcoming sequel. It's unclear if the game will support multiplayer as in New Super Mario Bros Wii, but given the portable's smaller screen real estate, it seems unlikely.

Mario for Wii U to be shown at E3 later this year

Getting older. Taxes. New Mario games on Nintendo hardware. Some things in life are simply inevitable. So, forgive us for not being surprised when Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that a new Super Mario game will be headed to the company's next home console, the Wii U.

"Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," a Nintendo spokesperson said.

Super Mario 4 domain registered by Nintendo

Nintendo promised yet another entry to their flagship Mario series earlier this year. Describing it is as a brand new 2D game for 3DS, we reported that it should be similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series.

Although Super Mario 3D Land came out just months ago, it appears Nintendo may be readying to announce (and promote) a brand new Mario game--at least based on a new domain name registration filed by the publisher.

New Super Mario Bros. game coming to 3DS 'next fiscal year'

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata called two games the "centerpiece of evergreen titles for the 3DS." They were Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. (Given their sales, it's easy to see why!) But that's just the beginning for Nintendo's 3DS strategy. "There will be more and more highly-anticipated titles for the Nintendo 3DS," Iwata promised.

The next fiscal year, which begins in April, already has a number of key titles: Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario Tennis, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, and more. But of course, everyone's favorite Italian plumber will be making a return.

Mario Kart 7 & Super Mario 3D Land dated

Mario Kart 7 & Super Mario 3D Land dated

There was one crucial omission to the Nintendo 3DS launch library: Mario. Nintendo is making up for his absence with not one, but two Mario games for the handheld this holiday season. The first is Super Mario 3D Land, the "first-ever true 3D Mario platforming adventure." Developed by Nintendo's Tokyo team, the same team responsible for the Super Mario Galaxy series, the game will take advantage of the gyroscope by allowing players to find secrets before they play a level. There's StreetPass functionality, too. Super Mario 3D Land will be available on November 13.

Next up is Mario Kart 7.

Fils-Aime points to lack of software, late eShop for sluggish 3DS sales

Fils-Aime points to lack of software, late eShop for sluggish 3DS sales

The impending 3DS price drop isn't a healthy sign for its sales, but Nintendo executives have been surprisingly candid about their missteps with the device. Now Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is joining in acknowledging that the system simply didn't launch with enough strong software. Ambitious projections based on early excitement made the slower sales all the more surprising to the company.

Two more 3DS Ambassador games revealed

Two more games in the 3DS Ambassador program have been reportedly revealed, from a Nintendo of America customer service representative. NWR reports that they include the GBA titles Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror. Like the rest of the GBA games, these would presumably be exclusive to Ambassador members, as Nintendo has stated it doesn't intend to release that set to the general public.
