Call of Duty: Ghosts PC will look better than next-gen console versions

Call of Duty: Ghosts PC will look better than next-gen console versions

Call of Duty: Ghosts will ship on pretty much every platform imaginable, from current to next-gen systems. And the PC version will come out on top--at least visually--Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin says.

"PC has its own set of assets," he said. "It's going to look better than any Call of Duty we've ever made on PC," pointing out that "they're actually using an even higher version in many cases than the next-gen consoles, from a texture standpoint."

Call of Duty: Ghosts producer says fully destructible environments 'not very interesting'

Call of Duty: Ghosts producer says fully destructible environments 'not very interesting'

Call of Duty: Ghosts is introducing some new elements to the series, like dynamic maps in multiplayer modes. Those points aren't entirely dynamic, though, instead relying on particular fracture points. Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin says that decision was made to encourage strategy as players get to know the destructible points, rather than what they feel would just be a visual flourish.

Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer hands-on: Cranked and Search & Rescue

Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer hands-on: Cranked and Search & Rescue

Multiplayer for Call of Duty: Ghosts feels much like it has in previous iterations. The routine feels mostly the same: set a loadout, spawn in, walk around the corner, get shot, lather, rinse, and repeat. It's as fun and satisfying as ever, but it becomes difficult to innovate after so many years. Activision and Infinity Ward certainly try their best, though, as I noticed when I played through two of Ghosts' new game modes, Cranked and Search & Rescue.

Call of Duty engine blamed for lack of female fighters (until now)

Call of Duty engine blamed for lack of female fighters (until now)

Call of Duty: Ghosts is the first game in the franchise that lets you play as a female soldier. According to Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin, tech was to blame for the all-male roster so far.

"Our previous engine would not handle that," he told Kotaku. "The way memory worked in the previous engine, it never would have been able to do that. When we got a chance to re-tool the engine completely, that gave us the opportunity to make the change that we could have character customization. That then gave us the opportunity to do female characters."

Call of Duty: Ghosts will not launch with microtransactions

Call of Duty: Ghosts will not launch with microtransactions

Call of Duty: Ghosts is said to feature over 20,000 different options to customize your multiplayer character. Many of these customizable items will be cosmetic, which, of course, raises the possibility of microtransactions. But unlike Black Ops 2, it doesn't appear that Ghosts will sell any of those cosmetic goodies--at least not at launch.

Call of Duty: Ghosts' multiplayer revealed: female soldiers, dynamic maps, and more

In case you missed the live reveal, here's what's new in COD: Ghosts' multiplayer. Plus: the new multiplayer trailer.

First up, the game is all about customization. With "Create a Soldier," you can alter your face, headgear, uniform. Activision promises over 20,000 customizations--which should offer plenty of opportunity to sell microtransactions. Perhaps the most notable choice: you'll be able to create female soldiers for the first time.

Infinity Ward upheaval made Call of Duty 'better future proofed'

Infinity Ward upheaval made Call of Duty 'better future proofed'

When Infinity Ward co-founders West and Zampella left Activision, they took a large chunk of the team with them. That forced Activision to pair the remnants of the team with Sledgehammer Games to co-develop Modern Warfare 3. At the end of the day, Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin says that the dramatic shift actually benefited the company and the brand by better preparing the studio for the rigors of next-gen development.

"I think we are better future proofed for making Call of Duty going forward," Rubin said. "And we may or may not have done this if not for that [tumultuous] event."

Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-orders 'well below' Black Ops 2 due to next-gen 'hesitation'

Call of Duty: Ghosts pre-orders 'well below' Black Ops 2 due to next-gen 'hesitation'

Activision's Eric Hirshberg has confirmed that pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are "well below" that of last year's game. But the reason may surprise you.

According to Hirshberg, pre-orders are lower "as one might expect in this console transition year." While the prospect of a next-gen COD should be exciting for series fans, apparently there is "hesitation" over which version to get.

Call of Duty: Ghosts for Wii U officially announced

Call of Duty: Ghosts for Wii U officially announced

Guess the mystery is over. Call of Duty: Ghosts has been officially announced for Wii U, little over a month after Infinity Ward said it was working on a port.

The Wii U version will be out November 5, same day as the other current-gen consoles. Like Black Ops 2 before it, the Wii U version will support Wii Remote and second-screen GamePad features.

Call of Duty: Ghosts adds 'Free Fall' pre-order bonus map

Call of Duty: Ghosts adds 'Free Fall' pre-order bonus map

Battlefield 4 is all about "levolution," EA's gimmicky marketing term used to describe the nonetheless impressive amount of destruction you can cause in the environment. And Activision is saying "hey, we can do the same thing" with its newest pre-order incentive.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will launch with a special multiplayer map for gamers that pre-order. "Free Fall" is a bonus downloadable map that features what Activision calls "dynamic map events."

Call of Duty: Ghosts coming to Wii U, at some point

Activision has been all-quiet on Call of Duty: Ghosts for Wii U, leaving us to assume the franchise would be skipping Nintendo's platform altogether. Not so, says Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin. They're just biding their time.

Call of Duty: Ghosts preview: a more intimate CoD

Call of Duty: Ghosts preview: a more intimate CoD

Call of Duty has made bombastic action its stock-in-trade, as each subsequent iteration of the long-standing military shooter attempts to top itself. The figurative volume of the series is seemingly always blaring. Call of Duty: Ghosts might actually be primed to change that.
