Call of Duty and Battlefield are higher-res on PS4 than Xbox One

Initial reports pegged PlayStation 4 as more powerful than Xbox One. But, will the differences between the two consoles make much a difference? Apparently, two big multiplatform games both run at a higher resolution on PS4 than on Xbox One: Call of Duty and Battlefield.

Call of Duty: Ghosts Extinction have players fighting aliens

Updated with the official trailer.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will introduce a brand new game mode, one involving aliens. Initially teased by Call of Duty's official Instagram, new details about "Extinction" have surfaced from a leak. The mode appears to be Infinity Ward's take on sci-fi co-op shooting, much like Treyarch's zombie modes from Black Ops and World at War.

Call of Duty: Ghosts PC requires 64-bit Windows

Explosions. And not just any explosions. These are next-gen explosions. Will your PC be able to handle Call of Duty: Ghosts? Even if your rig was able to handle last year's Black Ops 2, you may want to double-check. This year, Infinity Ward has upped the min-spec, requiring 6GB of RAM and a 64-bit version of Windows. But with these requirements, at least Infinity Ward promises that the PC version will look even better than the next-gen console versions.

Explosions: The Call of Duty: Ghosts launch trailer

Here's the "gameplay launch trailer" for Call of Duty: Ghosts. And why yes, there are explosions, thank you for asking.

The trailer has a bit of a Battlefield vibe, thanks to its exploding tanker and focus on destructibility. But note: Ghosts has dogs, while DICE's shooter does not. Also, is that a scene from Gravity at the end of the trailer?

Call of Duty not representative of military life, says Ghosts producer

Call of Duty not representative of military life, says Ghosts producer

The Call of Duty series has often prided itself on its realistic take on military warfare. However, as the years have gone on, they've veered away from a realism and moved more towards the Hollywood blockbuster territory seen in Call of Duty: Ghosts and its sci-fi elements. The reason for that, according to Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg and Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin, is because they can't completely replicate the war stories told directly to them by military veterans.

Why Call of Duty: Ghosts discarded old multiplayer modes

Why Call of Duty: Ghosts discarded old multiplayer modes

After ruling the multiplayer space for almost ten years, innovation can be a bit difficult. So Activision and Infinity Ward decided to go back to the drawing board with multiplayer game modes and start entirely from scratch. This process has led to some of the new modes in Call of Duty: Ghosts, like Search & Rescue and Cranked.

Call of Duty: Ghosts' next-gen upgrade plans detailed

Call of Duty: Ghosts' next-gen upgrade plans detailed

With so many cross-generation games launching this year, both Sony and Microsoft have announced plans to let gamers "upgrade" from one gen to the next--usually at a cost of about $10. However, there isn't just one way to take advantage of this deal. As Call of Duty: Ghosts proves, there are many ways to upgrade to the Xbox One and PS4 version of the game.

For example, there will be a disc-less "Game Ahead" version of Call of Duty: Ghosts you can purchase at participating retailers. For $69.99, this version will include digital versions of the Xbox 360 and Xbox One version of the game. When redeemed, both games will be tied to a single Gamertag.

Call of Duty: Ghosts companion app gives clan XP

Activision's Beachhead Studio is working on the companion app for Call of Duty: Ghosts. And while it offers the usual suite of clan management you might expect from such an app, Ghosts senior executive producer Marcus Iremonger says that using it will also yield XP rewards, even if you're not playing in your clan at the time.

Call of Duty: Ghosts started as 'Modern Warfare 4'

Call of Duty: Ghosts started as 'Modern Warfare 4'

In the weeks leading up to the Call of Duty: Ghosts reveal, fans tended to use "Modern Warfare 4" as shorthand for the unnamed project. Apparently that title wasn't just for fans, as executive producer Mark Rubin says the game actually started as a direct sequel, before the studio changed the name.

Call of Duty: Ghosts campaign uses 'plausible' sci-fi concepts

Call of Duty: Ghosts campaign uses 'plausible' sci-fi concepts

Let's face it, if Activision is kicking off a trailer with "Call of Duty IN SPAAAAAAACE," then it's probably time to toss the whole concept of realism out the window. Or is it? Activision community manager Dan Amrich insists that the campaign for Call of Duty: Ghosts is entirely plausible, pointing out that the single-player trailer's opening scene is "more science than science fiction," and is based on the oft-used science-fiction idea of kinectic bombardment.
