The Xbox 360 has sold over 28 million units worldwide since its 2005 launch, manufacturer Microsoft announced today.

The Xbox 360's lead over Sony's rival PlayStation 3 hardware now exceeds 8 million units, the company claims, with the Xbox 360 outselling the PS3 in Europe by over 1 million. Nintendo Overwhelms November Hardware Sales, Sells Over 2 Million Wiis

Along with November's best-selling consoles games, NPD has detailed the month's hardware sales from US retailers. Thanks to the holiday shopping season, each console saw a significant jump that, at least, came close to doubling October sales.

Nintendo's Wii posted a staggering 2.04 million sales, a one-month record since NPD began its tracking in 2001. Last year, the Wii sold 981,000 over the same period. Read more »

Xbox 360 Outsold PlayStation 3 3:1 on Black Friday, Claims Microsoft

The Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 on a three-to-one ratio on Black Friday, one of the biggest holiday shopping days of the year, Microsoft has announced.

Citing U.S. retailer reports, Microsoft said November 28 was a "historic Black Friday for Xbox 360," with an estimated 25% jump in hardware sales over Black Friday 2007.

The company further reported that, since the September price drop, the Xbox 360 has outsold the PlayStation 3 "week over week across Europe," with European console sales "up as much as 400 percent." Read more »

Xbox 360 Outsells Original Xbox

Microsoft has confirmed that the the Xbox 360 has now outsold the original Xbox, meaning that it has sold over 25 million units worldwide since its 2005 launch.

Sony Claims 14 Million PSN Users

Today is the PlayStation 3's second birthday, and in typical Sony fashion the company is celebrating by way of its PR department, as the company has declared that there are 14 million online PlayStation Network accounts to go with "nearly 17 million" PlayStation 3 systems.

"With 14 million active accounts and 273 million pieces of content downloaded, we know that you're thirsting for ... digital entertainment," wrote Sony marketer John Koller on Sony's official PlayStation Blog. Read more »

Xbox 360 Opens Wide Lead on PS3 in October

Sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 dominated those of rival Sony's PlayStation 3 by a nearly two-to-one margin in October, according to new figures released by US sales tracker NPD.

The final numbers show the Xbox 360 with October sales of 371,000 units, compared to PlayStation 3 sales of 190,000. The Xbox 360 also lead the PlayStation 3 in the month of September, though by a smaller margin.

The news follows a September 7 price cut on the cheapest version of the Xbox 360 to $199, and comes just ahead of the November 19 launch of the New Xbox Experience, a set of updates to the console's interface and functionality. Read more »

Wii Nears 35M Units Sold Worldwide, DS at 84M

Nintendo has weighed in with its latest financial results, revealing that the Wii hardware has sold 34.55 million units since it launched in 2006, with the Nintendo DS having sold 84.33 million units worldwide in the time since its 2004 marketplace debut.

The company has sold 10.1 million Wiis and 13.73 million Nintendo DS units in the past six months, with Nintendo elaborating that 299.85 million units of Wii software have been sold since 2006, with lifetime Nintendo DS software sales at 454.63 million. Read more »

PlayStation 3 Nears 17 Million Units Sold Worldwide; Sony Profits Dip 90%, Gaming Up Over Last Year

Since its 2006 debut, the PlayStation 3 has sold 16.84 million units worldwide, according to new financial documents released by Sony.

During the second quarter of Sony's 2008 fiscal year, which ended on September 30, 2.43 million PS3s were sold, adding to the 14.41 million that had been sold as of June 30, 2008.

In all, Sony expects to sell 10 million PlayStation 3 units during this fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2009. To reach that goal, Sony will have to sell 6.01 million PS3s across the next two quarters, one of which covers the lucrative Christmas season. Read more »

Nintendo: 33% More Wiis Now, 50% More for Holidays

Nintendo is delivering on its promise to deliver more Wii consoles to retailers, with more units in production in fall 2008 than were being made in fall 2007.

NPD: Force Unleashed, Wii Fit Lead September Sales, 360 Sales Spike After Price Cut

Increased Wii, DS Shipments May Not Fill Demand

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said there will be more DS and Wii units available at retail than last year, but he is unsure whether it will be enough to sate consumer demand.

"We are selling hardware at rates no system [seller] has ever experienced," Fils-Aime added.

Since its launch in November of 2006, the Wii has consistently sold out in American retailers, making the Wii a popular Christmas gift for the third year in a row, counting the upcoming holiday season.

NPD: Madden, Wii Games Lead August

Xbox 360 hardware sales in North America have doubled, and in some instances sextupled, since last week's price cut, according to a statement from maker Microsoft.
