Former voice of Solid Snake 'bummed' about Metal Gear Solid 5

Former voice of Solid Snake 'bummed' about Metal Gear Solid 5

Over 15 years and nine games, David Hayter has been the voice of Snake. His gravelly voice has come to define Metal Gear Solid. When Kojima Productions debuted Metal Gear Solid 5, many fans were surprised (nay, upset) to discover that Hayter would not return for the upcoming game. However, perhaps no one was more surprised than Hayter himself.

"If it were my choice, I would do this role forever," he said. "To hear anyone else's voice coming from Snake's battered throat, makes me a little ill, to be honest."

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes are two different games

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes are two different games

The Metal Gear games are known for being confusing. Apparently, that trait is bleeding out beyond its narrative. Yesterday's reveal of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain suggested that the game was a combination of The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes. However, Konami has confirmed that they are, in fact, two separate games.

"Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are two separate games," a Konami representative told GameSpot. "Ground Zeroes will actually be a prologue to The Phantom Pain, and that's all we can share at this time."

Breaking down Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Breaking down Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

As many had suspected, The Phantom Pain was just a ruse. At GDC yesterday, Hideo Kojima revealed Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, accompanied by a lengthy five-minute trailer, one packed with clues as to where the franchise will go.

There's the obvious: the game starts in the 1970s, shortly after the events of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. At least, the portion of the game that's referred to as Ground Zeroes. But what other tidbits are hidden in the game's official debut?

The Phantom Pain is Metal Gear Solid 5, developed by Kojima Productions

The Phantom Pain is Metal Gear Solid 5, developed by Kojima Productions

So, guess Moby Dick Studio wasn't real after all. In a new trailer shown at GDC 2013, Hideo Kojima (wrapped in bandages) revealed a new trailer for The Phantom Pain Metal Gear Solid 5--as many suspected.

Hideo Kojima revealed that Metal Gear Solid 5 is the combination of both Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. In MGS5, Snake wakes up from a nine years-long coma, and must regain his strength to escape the hospital found in TPP's VGA debut. Kojima pointed out that after escaping the hospital, players will have access to the open-world gameplay promised by Ground Zeroes.

The Phantom Pain built on Kojima's Fox Engine

The Phantom Pain built on Kojima's Fox Engine

Ooh, what a merry chase The Phantom Pain is leading us on. Is it all an elaborate ruse for a new Metal Gear game? Is it happy coincidence that the first name of developer Moby Dick Studio's CEO, Joakim Mogren, is an anagram of "Kojima?" One thing's now for certain: the game is built upon the Fox Engine, Kojima Productions' shiny new tech.

Next-gen Pro Evolution Soccer to use Kojima's Fox Engine

Next-gen Pro Evolution Soccer to use Kojima's Fox Engine

Once the leader of the genre, Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series has been trumped by EA's FIFA games, both in sales and critical reception. With a new generation of consoles looming, what can Konami do to get its football game in top shape? Get help from Kojima Productions, of course.

Kojima Productions has been toiling away at a new graphics engine for quite some time. Fox Engine, which powers the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, looks quite impressive. Konami plans on using a modified version of that engine for its upcoming PES games.

Kojima says Wii U a 'special case,' requires 'unique' software

Kojima Productions' Project Ogre is still a bit mysterious, other than it running on the Fox Engine and dealing with heavy subject matter. One thing we can say, though, is that the game probably won't hit Wii U. Studio head Hideo Kojima recently commented that if he makes a Wii U game, it will be tailored to the device.

Hideo Kojima reveals new multiplatform 'Fox Engine,' powers new project

Hideo Kojima reveals new multiplatform 'Fox Engine,' powers new project

There was a serious lack of Metal Gear Solid: Rising action during Konami's pre-E3 conference today; however, Kojima Productions did offer one new announcement: a new development engine, powering a new Kojima-directed game.

Hideo Kojima dropped a few hints on a future project being developed at his internal Konami studio, explaining that the unannounced title will run on the team's brand new technology--aptly named the "Fox Engine." The engine is a multiplatform development tool that Kojima Productions will use in-house. Though platforms were not explicitly stated, Kojima teased demoing the tech by picking from a line-up of control options for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 [via GameTrailers]. Read more »
