Devolver Digital surprised many with their announcement that they'd be reviving the long-dormant Shadow Warrior franchise. After all, it wasn't the most fondly remembered game, as the 1997 first-person action game was more recognized for racist caricatures and outdated stereotypes. However, Devolver and Hard Reset developer Flying Wild Hog says that their reboot will be a complete reinvention and will start with a clean slate.
"The teams at Flying Wild Hog and Devolver Digital were big fans of the original game," said Devolver Digital's Nigel Lowrie. "It brought some great gameplay innovations and a really unique setting and aesthetic to shooters. We think it would be incredible to reinvent the Shadow Warrior world in a modern arcade-style shooter with some new combat innovations of our own that expand upon what was started in the original game."

Flying Wild Hog are no strangers to shooters. The studio is largely comprised of former designers from People Can Fly, the developers behind Painkiller and the more-recent Bulletstorm. So it’s no surprise that Flying Wild Hog has arrived on the gaming scene, guns blazing, with Hard Reset.
Hard Reset takes place in a dystopian future, where machines have taken over and humanity is largely in hiding. While Hard Reset’s story is set in the future, the gameplay mechanics are inspired by the past.

In advance of its release next week, a Hard Reset demo hit the Net to offer a taste of its cyberpunk styled robot-blasting action. The veteran PC developers at Flying Wild Hog have put together a good looking game that definitely taps that old-school PC shooter vibe. But don't take my word for it, give the demo a try. It offers around 20 to 30 minutes worth of action, giving you time to play around with the game's weapon customization system, and search around for hidden areas. You can grab the standalone demo from our link above or from Steam.

The cyberpunk shooter takes place in a world being ravaged by robotic enemies and combines the look of iconic films like Blade Runner with gameplay reminiscent of games like Painkiller (another series members of the developer have worked on).
