Bloomberg: Next Xbox won't be backwards-compatible

Not much is known about Microsoft's next Xbox, codenamed Durango. It's been long-rumored to use AMD chips for both its CPU and GPU--a point that's been repeated by financial news service Bloomberg. Speaking to an anonymous source, Bloomberg reports that the next Xbox will use a variant of AMD Jaguar technology, and that the switch to x86 architecture (much like PS4) will mean "game discs made for the current Xbox 360 won't be compatible."

Report: Next Xbox controller to feature 'improved ergonomics'

Microsoft has remained oddly silent about its next Xbox console, codenamed Durango. However, an apparent leak of the system SDK reveals some new tidbits about Redmond's next-gen effort.

Documentation posted by VGLeaks reiterates the Kinect requirement we heard about months ago. "Every Durango console will be sold with a new high-fidelity Kinect Sensor, which will be required for the system to operate," the help file says.

Crytek head says next-gen consoles 'impossible' to match PCs

As gamers prepare for their likely first glimpse of the next generation tomorrow, at least one executive is tempering expectations. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli says it is "impossible" for the next-generation consoles to match high-end gaming PCs.

Ever since we first saw Watch Dogs at Ubisoft's 2012 E3 press conference, rumors have been swirling that it's a next-gen console game. The developer has played it straight, confirming the game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but it seems we could be in for a transitional release.

Report: Next Xbox requires always-on Kinect

The next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will not only include an updated version of Kinect--it will require it. "It must be plugged in and calibrated for the console to even function," a new report on Kotaku reveals.

According to the site, Microsoft will include both Kinect and a hard drive in their next-gen console (both were optional accessories on Xbox 360). By making their use mandatory, developers will be able to make games with both peripherals in mind.

Xbox 8 domains registered by Microsoft

Could the next Xbox be called "Xbox 8"? Sure, the name might incite some confusion. For example, some might think the system to be 352 generations less powerful than the current iteration. Others will point out that that the next system is far from the eighth generation of the Xbox.

However, the name would make sense, given Microsoft's concurrent shifts to the number 8 across its other platforms. Specifically, both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are launching later this year.
