Killer Instinct patch to fix Spinal crash and broken 'Jail' system

Spinal's ominous debut in Killer Instinct didn't go quite as smoothly as some had hoped. The 'Jail' system launched with some problems and Spinal, himself, caused the game to crash on various occasions. Fortunately, Double Helix has some fixes in place and will deploy them shortly.

Strider review: still sharp

Strider review: still sharp

It's been nearly 15 years Capcom's Strider series last slashed the original PlayStation. Strider Hiryu is back in a bold new adventure, developed by Double Helix Games--the same team that worked on the Killer Instinct reboot.

Double Helix adds a Metroidvania approach with their take on the series. Whereas the first two games were about following a linear path from point A to point B, the new Strider has players exploring a futuristic Kazakh City while unlocking new abilities that will enable discovering new parts of the map. It's a drastic change to the formula, but also a welcome one.

Strider retrospective reintroduces Hiryu

Strider retrospective reintroduces Hiryu

Strider is a week away from returning to PC and consoles. But I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Who is this Hiryu person and why should I care about his ability to make enemies literally explode with the swing of his blade?" That's as good a cue as any for a quick refresher and Capcom is happily helping that cause with a Strider retrospective, while also revealing a pre-order bonus for the new game's PC version.

Killer Instinct will have 'new development partner' after Double Helix sale

Killer Instinct debuts Spinal with new rage quit rules

Killer Instinct debuts Spinal with new rage quit rules

Double Helix is upping Killer Instinct's roster by one more today, as the bone-chilling Spinal enters the arena. With the ability to absorb projectiles and teleport back and forth, Spinal's an intimidating foe and you might be tempted to just quit while you're ahead. That's not advised, as Spinal will be accompanied by some new rules meant to deter rage quitters.

Since Strider aims to bring his ninja skills to a new generation, it only makes sense that his most recognized enemies should do the same. Killer Instinct's new free character is Sabrewulf

Free-to-play fighter Killer Instinct has for the first time switched the character available to everyone for free, rotating out Jago for lycanthrope Sabrewulf. You can still buy the fighting monk, of course. The change came with a new patch last week, which also brought tweaks and fixes and whatnot.

Killer Instinct review: Combo Broken

Killer Instinct review: Combo Broken

For fighting fans, the launch of Xbox One doesn't offer much beyond Killer Instinct, a revival of the classic Super Nintendo-era franchise. Many hallmarks of the series are here, including bombastic combos and back-and-forth battles. And while the gameplay proves capable, the lack of game modes and fighters make the initial release feel like an incomplete product.

Killer Instinct is built on a bedrock of rock-paper-scissors combat. While the game's exterior boasts flashy multi-hit combos and keen special moves, the foundation centers around counters, making it more a game of cat-and-mouse, rather than a race to brutalize the opponent. It's a formula that may entice veterans, but might also chase off newcomers.

Microsoft gives away free Xbox One systems and Killer Instinct games to select fans

The company has been giving away free copies of Killer Instinct for Xbox One giving dedicated fans a fully unlocked version of the free-to-play fighter. Of course, these fans will have to pick up an Xbox One to play the game, so it's a rather brilliant move on Microsoft's part to ensure Xbox One purchases.
