The Dawnguard needed me to continue on its quest, but first there was the little issue of my latent vampirism. I was directed to Morthal, to meet with Falion. He tells me the only way to cure this evil inside is to use a Black Soul Gem. He conveniently sold these, making me wonder if this wasn't some elaborate sales pitch. But as he pointed out, I needed a filled Gem, which means killing someone and taking their soul to bind inside the artifact.
Wait. This is supposed to make me less evil?

I accepted Lord Harkon's offer, and he came at me like a bolt of lightning. Everything went fuzzy and dark, and I woke up in a part of Volkihar Keep that I didn't recognize. Harkon was waiting for me, apparently having watched me sleep. Vampires are creepers, you know. He guided me through my vampire powers: the ability to change forms, turn to a swarm of bats, and so on. Truth be told, I was really hoping that my vampire form would be some sort of lizard-vampire, but alas I look like any run-of-the-mill Vampire Lord.

Lacertus the Argonian mage was a legend, once: Skyrim's greatest dragon slayer, leader of the Dark Brotherhood, arch-mage of Winterhold, and mammoth liberator. That was a long time ago. The great Lizard Wizard had long since gone into retirement, enjoying quiet solitude sorting and resorting his potions into a single (surprisingly spacious) chest at his home in Breezewood.
But recently, I had heard whispers of a new faction. City officers would speak of the Dawnguard gathering its forces again. Clearly, it was time to add a new title to my resume, and to take up the mantle of Lacertus once more.
