Graphics are '60% of the game,' Crytek CEO says

The graphics vs. gameplay debate has raged for some time. Unsurprisingly, the CEO of Crysis 3 developer Crytek thinks graphics top gameplay every time.

"People say that graphics don't matter, but play Crysis and tell me they don't matter. It's always been about graphics driving gameplay," CEO Cevat Yerli said.

So, what's new in CryEngine 3?

So, what's new in CryEngine 3?

As with all engines, CryEngine gets updated all the time. We met up with Crytek at GDC to see what shiny new bells and whistles they've added to their engine.

The first new feature is unique to Crytek. Pixel Accurate Displacement Mapping (PADM) is the studio's alternative to tessellation. It allows artists to add a displacement texture dynamically on objects "with no visible polygon edges on the silhouette of the displacement." In a real-time demo, we saw a tree trunk's displacement dynamically altered--a neat trick for artists, to be sure.

Darksiders devs to bid on franchise rights, 'belongs in the hands of its creators'

When THQ collapsed, it could not find a proper home for the Darksiders franchise and its developer, Vigil Games. After the studio closed, many of its former members found a new home in Crytek USA.

David Adams, now-CEO of Crytek USA, says that his company now plans on bidding for the franchise rights, saying that "it belongs at home with its creators."

Crysis 3 Wii U was made but 'had to die'

Crysis 3 Wii U was made but 'had to die'

The Wii U is a reasonably powerful piece of kit, so how come the recent launch of Crysis 3 skipped it? Developer Crytek did actually have the supersuit shooter up and running on Nintendo's new console, CEO Cevat Yerli has revealed, but the powers that be wouldn't commit to pushing it out and Crytek couldn't self publish. So it was killed.

Crytek head says next-gen consoles 'impossible' to match PCs

As gamers prepare for their likely first glimpse of the next generation tomorrow, at least one executive is tempering expectations. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli says it is "impossible" for the next-generation consoles to match high-end gaming PCs.

Crysis 3 single-player review: looks can kill

Crysis 3 single-player review: looks can kill

The Crysis series has always been the benchmark for pushing gaming PCs to their limits. Crysis 3 is no different. It is unsurprisingly gorgeous on PC, especially if you have a rig capable of showing off all the wonderful things that CryEngine 3 can do.

But get past the pretty graphics, and you'll discover a strong single-player campaign with engrossing gameplay and a decent-enough story.

Crysis 3 trailer deploys ZZ Top

Crysis 3 trailer deploys ZZ Top

An earlier Crysis 3 trailer wanted to inspire awkward feelings of awe and arousal for one of the FPS's guns, apparently. Now a new commercial wants to spark similar desires for its protagonist, with a little help from ZZ Top. Boys want to be him, I guess, and girls want to be with him, probably. Every girl's crazy about a sharp-dressed man, after all.

Crytek still planning retail games ahead of F2P switch

Crytek has spoken before about its hopes for free-to-play, hoping to escape the conventional retail model and solely make free-to-play games. The Crysis developer doesn't feel quite ready to make the switch yet but whether it takes two years or five, CEO Cevat Yerli has said, free-to-play will rival retail and Crytek will be there.

Crytek opens new US studio, will be 'new start' for Vigil

"Maybe you can imagine what it feels like when you read the list of who bought what only to discover your name is not on the list. Why? Did we do something wrong? Were we not good enough? Were we not worth 'anything?' Imagine that," Vigil's Ben Cureton posted on NeoGAF after finding out that the Darksiders studio would not be picked up at THQ's liquidation auction.

However, the newly-formed Crytek USA promises to take some of that talent, offering "a new start" for members of that team.

THQ studios and games sold to Sega, Koch Media, Crytek, Take 2, and Ubisoft

THQ studios and games sold to Sega, Koch Media, Crytek, Take 2, and Ubisoft

In an auctioning process, THQ has sold many of its studios and upcoming games. Sega has agreed to purchase Relic Entertainment, developer of the upcoming Company of Heroes 2. Given the publisher's penchant for PC strategy games (like the Total War series), Relic's future may be relatively safe in the House of Sonic. According to @DDInvesting, Sega fronted $26 million in the auction, proving they want ownership of the PC strategy space.

Koch Media, owner of the Deep Silver publishing label, has agreed to purchase publishing rights for Metro: Last Light, and Volition, developer of THQ's successful Saints Row franchise. Koch Media offered $22.3 million for Volition, $5.8 million for Metro.

Crysis 3 trailer lusts after military hardware

Crysis 3 trailer lusts after military hardware

Gosh, aren't guns cool! They're all sleek and shiny, and make loud noises when you kill things. So cool! A new Crysis 3 trailer is dedicated to its new 'Typhoon' super-mega-cool gun, which EA says is "the culmination of 2,000 years of human warfare" and "the purest form of expression." With such an erotic weapon, you could be forgiven for wanting to seductively run your tongue across the tips of its ten barrels.

Crytek considered free-to-play multiplayer for Crysis 2 and 3

Crytek considered free-to-play multiplayer for Crysis 2 and 3

Free-to-play is the future for Crysis developer Crytek. While Crysis 3 will be a full retail release published by Electronic Arts, the developer considered implementing F2P elements into the upcoming shooter.

"We even considered a standalone free-to-play version for Crysis 2, to be honest. Launching the single-player as a packaged good and then making multiplayer free-to-play-only," Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said. "We also considered that for Crysis 3, and it didn't happen again."

Crysis 3 preview: knowing its niche

Crysis 3 preview: knowing its niche

At an Electronic Arts holiday showcase dominated by shooters this week, Crysis 3 stood out as being the most polished and impressive of the bunch. Of course, polish has never really been an issue for the Crysis series. It remains famous for being The Benchmark--the kind of game that can push even a dedicated gaming rig to its limits. That tradition looks to continue with Crysis 3. At the event, the demo was running on $5,000 computers, and my, did it ever look fine.

Crysis 3 has more going for it than just great graphics though. At this early stage, it also looks like a very challenging shooter. Possibly the most challenging shooter of 2013.
