EVE Online Goons manipulate war for staggering profit

EVE Online's complex and unforgiving nature may put many off the MMO, but it produces some cracking stories for us all to enjoy. The notorious Goonswarm have pulled another astonishing caper, manipulating galactic war and the markets to supposedly earn an absurd amount of money.

"Occasionally you will see the odd forum poster that throws out wild conspiracy theories about shadowy figures controlling parts of the game, or in the case of the especially insane, Goons controlling the game," said one of the Goons behind it. "This has never been true...until now."

When EVE Online first got into the virtual clothing business last year, it ended in a right royal stink. After rededicating itself to the core spaceships action with two big expansions, developer CCP is cautiously adding new clothes as part of the Inferno 1.1 update.

EVE Online celebrating 9th birthday with player gifts

EVE Online may be going through an economic purge, but they're not letting it spoil their birthday. The simulated universe is about to turn nine years old on May 6, a ripe-old age most MMOs can only dream of. Developer CCP is celebrating by serving up the traditional cake, ice cream, and gifts to fans.

No, they're not really serving cake or ice cream. Sorry to get your hopes up.

CCP gives blessing to EVE Online economy attack

You might think that after building a persistent world with its own complex infrastructure that has been active for 10 years, CCP would frown on players making an overt, planned attempt to wreck EVE Online's economy. You might think that, but you'd be wrong.

It's going to be "absolutely brilliant," senior producer Jon Lander said.

DUST 514 preview

DUST 514 preview

With its deep ties to EVE Online, DUST 514 is drawing from a "massive, persistent" online world containing "hundreds of thousands" of players, spanning "thousands of solar systems and individual planets. But does any of that matter? Can this intricate and dense world be relevant to PS3 gamers? Turns out, DUST is more than okay for non-EVE players. It doesn't require any knowledge of the EVE universe and is "designed to provide great moment-to-moment shooter gameplay."

World of Darkness and more at EVE Fanfest 2012

EVE Online developer CCP gave the first in-game-ish peek at World of Darkness at its annual EVE Fanfest event in Iceland over the weekend, trickling out a few more details on the MMO adaptation of White Wolf's vampiric RPG too. And, of course, there was bags of new information on EVE and its free-to-play PS3 FPS tie-in Dust 514.

Dust 514 will be free-to-play, no 'cover charge'

EVE Online aiming to become less newbie-terrifying

Much like Dwarf Fortress, space MMO EVE Online can be an absolute treat to hear tales from, but an absolute pig to get into yourself. As part of its renewed commitment to its community after the ill-fated 'Incarna' update, developer CCP has formed an internal team to try to make EVE less intimidating to new players.

The four-person 'Player Experience team' is to "focus on making EVE more accessible to players without dumbing down the game."

CCP talks PC/PS3 integration for Dust 514 and EVE Online

EVE Online developer CCP is preparing to embark on a new experiment in online game convergence with its upcoming console tie-in, Dust 514. In a recent interview, CCP's CEO Hilmar Pétursson discussed some of the steps that are being taken to integrate the upcoming PlayStation 3 shooter--Dust 514--into the same persistent universe as the PC-only MMO, the methodology that will be used to ensure the games will compliment each other in meaningful ways, and the challenges of supporting both games into the foreseeable future.

EVE Online introduces 60-day friend trials

A few days' trial period is usually plenty of time to get a fair feel for most MMOs, but not for the space oddity of EVE Online. As developer CCP continues to get back on its feet after long months of troubles, it's experimenting with a 60-day friend trial that will let people really get stuck into the complexities and intrigue of Internet spaceships.

"The 14 days we settled on is looking a little long in the tooth in the modern world, and honestly, EVE is just really big and players deserve more time to really get into the game."

World of Darkness team 'significantly reduced,' CCP to focus on EVE

World of Darkness team 'significantly reduced,' CCP to focus on EVE

It seems as though EVE Online developer CCP bit off a little more than it could chew when it decided to embark on simultaneous development of EVE expansions, the console-crossover EVE tie-in shooter Dust 514, and the new MMO World of Darkness. The company has stated that it has chosen to lay-off twenty-percent of its workforce, due to thinly-stretched resources and a desire to refocus more development attention on EVE.

"We have come to the conclusion that we are attempting too many things for a company our size," the developer admitted.
