StarCraft classic soundtrack coming to SC2

StarCraft classic soundtrack coming to SC2

For anyone who played a lot of StarCraft (or watched it played professionally), the RTS's soundtrack is a permanent fixture in their head, seared into ear canals like spiral soundwaves on a record and played by your fingernail every time you root around in there. Delightfully, Blizzard has remastered the hot tracks, and will add them into StarCraft II with patch 2.1.

Report: Intelligence agencies spied on Xbox Live, World of Warcraft, and Second Life

The world of national news has once again collided with our corner of video game news, as a new report claims that various intelligence agencies tried applying their spycraft within games like World of Warcraft and Second Life, along with the Xbox Live service. Classified documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden reveal that groups snooped in the games, believing they could be used by terrorists or other criminals to communicate secretly.

Community Spotlight: David Craddock's Stay Awhile and Listen post-mortem

David Craddock has been a part of Shacknews for many years, as both a writer and as a part of the Chatty community. He most recently released the first book of Stay Awhile and Listen: How Two Blizzards Unleashed Diablo and Forged a Video-Game Empire, his labor of love chronicling the creation of Diablo and the evolution of Blizzard Entertainment.

Mr. Craddock was happy to offer a bit of a post-mortem for the first part of his trilogy, which is available now through the Google Play store, Nook shop, and Amazon. He also offers some insights on his time at Shacknews and how much the community's feedback has been instrumental to the making of his book.

Why Diablo 3 for PC won't support controllers

Why Diablo 3 for PC won't support controllers

One of the new features added to the console version of Diablo 3 is the ability to play with controller. But hey, PC can do that too! So, why won't Blizzard allow PC players to use a controller with that version of the game?

"On PC you're a lot more stationary," Blizzard's Matthew Berger explained. "When you're playing on the PC, you're not really looking at your character as much, you're kind of focusing on the cursor. Whereas on console it's the exact opposite, you're drawn in."

Heroes of the Storm preview: storming the MOBA gates

Heroes of the Storm preview: storming the MOBA gates

For years, MMORPGs had to compete with the behemoth known as World of Warcraft and even the biggest games would fall at its feet. Now Blizzard finds itself going against giants, as its new MOBA Heroes of the Storm attempts to compete with the likes of Dota 2 and League of Legends. I got to go hands-on with Blizzard's foray into the MOBA space at Blizzcon and I'm pleased to say that it fits into the genre well, while also adding in some neat new mechanics and a number of the studio's most recognizable characters.

Sixth World of Warcraft expansion in development

Sixth World of Warcraft expansion in development

Blizzard may only have just announced its fifth expansion for World of Warcraft, Warlords of Draenor, but number six is already in the works. As people continue to leave (the MMORPG's now down to a still-impressive 7.7 million subscribers), Blizzard's hoping that releasing expansions more quickly will keep players interested.

StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void still finding right fit for Protoss

StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void still finding right fit for Protoss

StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void will finish the planned trilogy of SC2 games, whenever it comes out. Blizzard was notably quiet about the third installment at BlizzCon last weekend, and game director Dustin Browder says that's because it still needs work. Apparently, the team is working to nail down the proper feeling of empowerment for the Protoss race.

Blizzard could add dormant franchise characters to Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard could add dormant franchise characters to Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the Storm will release with 18 characters, running the gamut from Blizzard's ongoing properties, like World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft. Of course, that won't be the final number, as Blizzard is aiming to release more characters throughout the game's development. However, the studio also acknowledges that it has more than 20 years of history to pull from and hints at the possibility of characters from long-dormant franchises joining the fray, as well.

How Heroes of the Storm aims to attract MOBA beginners

How Heroes of the Storm aims to attract MOBA beginners

Perhaps more than any other, the MOBA genre can be the hardest for beginners to grasp. Part of that is because of the hardcore, dedicated communities surrounding the genre's two most recognizable names: Dota 2 and League of Legends. So how does Blizzard's upcoming entry, Heroes of the Storm, hope to appeal to the novice?

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls PS4 preview: the next crusade

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls PS4 preview: the next crusade

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls begins with Sanctuary under siege by an army of the dead, filled with unwilling mortal victims. To discover what's at the source of this attack, I went hands-on with the new Diablo 3 expansion at Blizzcon, taking a look at the PS4 version of the game, as well as the new class: the Crusader.

Reaper of Souls follows the end of the original Diablo 3 campaign, where a brand new evil has risen. A fallen archangel called Malthael has condemned humanity and is using the power of the Black Soulstone to transform unwilling humans into his undead soldiers.

Hearthstone's final version will feature cross-platform play

Hearthstone's final version will feature cross-platform play

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is also coming to iOS and Android. And once all versions are finalized and released, they'll be able to interact with one another.

Lead designer Eric Dodds confirmed that the PC version of Hearthstone will release first, with iOS and Android versions coming later. However, since Hearthstone decks are tied to a player's Battle.net account, cards can be accessed across all platforms. Not only that, but card battles can also be conducted cross-platform.

How garrisons introduce offline progression to World of Warcraft

How garrisons introduce offline progression to World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft's upcoming Warlords of Dreanor expansion is taking the long-running MMORPG in some bold new directions. One of the most intriguing new features is the inclusion of player-built garrisons, which adds the idea of player housing to the game for the first time.
