It's the toy-buying season, and wouldn't you know it, Disney has added some new faces to its ever-increasing roster of Disney Infinity figures. The holiday sets include characters from Disney Animation Studios' recent CG work: the films Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen.

Disney Infinity starter set hits 1 million sold

Disney Infinity has sold more than one million of its starter sets since its August launch, and the individual toy sets are said to be selling very well. When it comes to particularly popular figures, Disney boasts they tend to sell out in only a few days.

Disney Infinity is including standard mission types alongside a more open-ended Toy Box mode. The Toy Box was pioneered in Toy Story 3, and Disney Interactive and Pixar naturally figured it would be a fit for Infinity as well. A new trailer shows the progression of the mode.

Disney Infinity delayed to August 18

The toy-game hybrid Disney Infinity has been delayed to August 18, Disney has announced. The company said the new release date puts it at a more favorable time of year than its previous June target, but even at the new date it should beat Skylanders Swap Force to market.

Disney Infinity is the House of Mouse's twist at Activision's successful Skylanders franchise, by incorporating real-world toys with video gaming. As pretty much everyone has concluded, "this thing is going to print money."

When the game launches, the $75 Starter Set will feature Mr. Incredible, Monster Inc.'s Sulley, and Captain Jack Sparrow. But, how did Disney settle on these characters, especially considering the breadth of IPs at their disposal? We asked John Blackburn, developer Avalanche Software's CEO, about exactly that.

Disney officially announced Disney Infinity today, confirming several of the details circulating last month. The ambitious game draws together characters from Disney and Pixar, pitching itself as a platform for "play sets" starring the cast of various film properties.

Layoffs hit Disney's Avalanche Software

Disney's Salt Lake City, Utah-based subsidiary, Avalanche Software, has been hit with layoffs. The estimated 15-20 layoffs reportedly took place September 1, and were a response to budget issues as the economy continues to hit the video game industry. An estimated 170 employees are still with the company.

"Disney has been on the losing end for a while, supposedly," said a source.
