Guild Wars 2 lets you choose between five distinct races. Each comes with its own lore, and developer Arenanet is highlighting those stories by releasing the opening cinematics for three of the races--Humans, Norn, and Charr--along with blurbs of their plots. Intros for the other two races will come later.

When's Guild Wars 2 coming out? August 28, that's when, publisher NCsoft announced today. That should give you plenty of time to file a time-off request at work and stock up on supplies for the customary launch binge. There's a new trailer teasing some of the wonders you'll see in ArenaNet's subscription-free MMORPG, too.

"If the success of a subscription-based MMO is measured by the number of people paying a monthly fee, how does that impact game design decisions?" asks Colin Johanson, Guild Wars 2 lead content developer. As ArenaNet's subscription-free MMORPG isn't motivated by "the need to create mechanics that keep people playing as long as possible," he claims, design is led by a simple question: "Is this fun?"

The developer didn't share more details on how frequently these weekends will come, so clear your schedule if you get into the first one.

You may remember, a month ago, the announcement that pre-purchasing Guild Wars 2 would give you access to all beta weekend events. You may also have forgotten about that, as it was announced long before you could actually buy it it. But huzzah, the day is here, and you can now make sure you're enlisted for the beta fun.

Guild Wars 2 may be subscription-free but, like its predecessor, will have microtransactions for cosmetic items and time-saving doodads. If the idea makes you nervous, fear not!
"It's never OK for players to buy a game and not be able to enjoy what they paid for without additional purchases, and it's never OK for players who spend money to have an unfair advantage over players who spend time," ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien has said, explaining how it'll work.

"When it's done" - three little words that infuriate some and delight others, and three words which no longer stand in for Guild Wars 2's release date. The subscription-free MMORPG will launch on PC "later this year," developer ArenaNet announced today, preceded by the beta testing ramping up.

Though word leaked earlier this week that the final Guild Wars 2 profession revealed would be Mesmer, all we had was a video without any explanation. Today, developer ArenaNet officially unveiled GW2's take on the returning class, with heaps of details and a few screenshots.
The announcement comes just in time as ArenaNet revealed that a closed beta is starting this Friday.

Due to the fact that "someone jumped the gun" on embargoed information, ArenaNet has confirmed that the eighth and final profession for Guild Wars 2 will be the Mesmer.
The masters of illusion and control have been a staple in the Guild Wars series since the game was first released, which was eventually referred to as the "Prophecies" campaign.

Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet is shining the spotlight on its playable plant people in a week of videos and articles. The Sylvari race might have similarities with the elves seen in every fantasy game under the sun but, thankfully, they seem far a more interesting take on the idea of wise and noble forest-dwellers, and not nearly as tiresome.

Developer Undead Labs today revealed itself to the world, announcing its intent to "create the definitive massively multiplayer online zombie game (MMOZ) for console gamers."
The studio was founded by Blizzard veteran Jeff Strain, who contributed programming to both Diablo and StarCraft and, according to today's press release, formed "the initial team and kicked off development on the wildly successful MMO World of Warcraft [in 1999] while taking on the roles of team lead and lead programmer on the project." Come April 2000, Strain and two others had left Blizzard to co-found Guild Wars developer ArenaNet. Read more »
