werd?

Jul 26, 1999 3:48am CST tags: zGeneral News
Yow, took a nice long relaxing weekend and there is like 500million different things I gotta post now. Looks like it's gonna be a long night, that's what I get for goofing off all weekend though eh? I did however finally add that Quake3 messageboard link on the right table under the headlines though. :)

So, after the face lift of the page here in a couple of weeks, I've been contemplating a bit of an expansion on what exactly gets covered here on the page. It will still remain hardcore FPS 3D action games, but I've really come to enjoy reading all the comments people have whenever other topics find their way onto the page. So what do you guys think? Random geeky stuff? Movie stuff? Porn industry stuff? I'm open to suggestions as always. Oh yeah, check out these screenshots that BLoG sent me (shot1 and shot2) of goofing off with the cg_railtrailtime variable in Quake3. Pretty colors!

Rapture '99!

Jul 25, 1999 6:31am CST tags: zGeneral News
In the sea of the incredibly exciting news this weekend, we almost forgot Rapture '99! Sargon (and a whole gang with mean looks- they must be handing out caffeine rations) slaps it into me that it's a lan party in Scotland which as its highlight has a QW match between 2 select squads of European and North American players. Yesterday 4 games were played with the EU winning 3  and the USA taking one. Results and a demo of two is a at www.fpsgamers.com and www.quakenation.com is also covering the event. There's a lot of people on quakenet irc (#rapture99) and you can even hear a shoutcast from the event at B0rkFM (195.195.26.198:8000) the shoutcast broadcasts music, but they also do interviews with people at the event and comment on happening matches. Last and not least, there are quakeworld proxies up, so you can watch the games as theyre played - provided youre lucky to get a spot (IRC is probably the best place to get info on the proxies)

You can get the full coverage at Quake Nation and FPSGamers.

Talk about an incredibly boring day, jeeze. Ah well hope you puds are having a good weekend, I'll try and dig up what I can for you guys to read in the morning eh? Since weekends are nice and slow I'll spend some time Sunday afternoon re-working the page a bit and finally adding that Quake3 messageboard link to the front page so you guys can stop bitching at me. :)

Q3Test Demo Recording

Jul 24, 1999 1:31am CST tags: Q3Test, zGeneral News, Demo
Something I figured out over the past couple of days is that Q3Test demos are in fact not broken, however the multi-binding system to quickly record demos doesnt work. You now have to record demos like this:

g_syncronousclients 1
record mycooldemo
g_syncronousclients 0
stoprecord <to stop demo>

Eh?

Jul 23, 1999 9:00am CST tags: zGeneral News
Mornin', just a quick update before I go catch some Z's. It's nice that the weekend is (almost) here. Steve should be making some more appearances today to hook you up with some more news.

I am in desperate need of hard drive space, and from the round up (see post). Gonna try to jack one of those WD 18000s if I can. Opinions?

Oh, and off of MPC and Ars- "Who needs the iMac's five colors when you can now get Windows 95/98's blue screens of death in green, red, yellow, white and black."

Linux Heretic II Server

Jul 22, 1999 5:11pm CST tags: zGeneral News
Recent William Mull and Jake Simpson .plan updates inform about the Dedicated Linux Heretic II is now available (heretic2-1.06-linux-x86-glibc2.tar.gz: 820 KB or heretic2-1.06-linux-x86-glibc2.zip: 806 KB), with the client coming soon:

A quick update to let those that are interested know that the Dedicated Heretic II Linux port is now avaible. Its dedicated only, and requires access to a full install of Heretic II on a windows machine. The code is congruent with v1.06 of H2, which is the latest and greatest flavor. There is a readme file with the download that gives details on how to install it.

There is a client version of H2 coming some time, its being done by a company called Loki, and they have the rights to release it themselves. However, will be a retail thing, so you will have to pay for it.

In the mean time, go mad with this, and have fun. Remember though, this an un-supported Beta, it HASN'T been through QA, although we have bashed on it a bit here, and it appears stable.

Warmonkey w/ Dual Head

Jul 22, 1999 5:08pm CST tags: zGeneral News
Matrox just sent this press release this morning regarding this new game called Warmonkey that's supposed to look and work on G400's dual head like a charm:

As the first true 3D action/tactics game, WARMONKEYS features breathtaking graphics, revolutionary artificial intelligence and gameplay that is both challenging and addictive...

<blablah>

Silicon Dreams is currently working in partnership with Matrox Graphics Inc., whose Matrox G400-based graphics cards feature DualHead Display—offering users the ability to simultaneously output independent images to two display screens. When playing WARMONKEYS with a Matrox Millennium G400 Series card, gamers will be able to display the 3D view of the world on their primary monitor while using a second monitor or TV to display other views such as maps and first-person views of objects being shot at

Here are some pictures of the dual head in action, as well as a Matrox coffee mug (I don't know either): [shot 1] [shot 2] [shot 3]

IGN SoF Preview

Jul 22, 1999 6:16am CST tags: zGeneral News
IGN previews Raven's hacked up Q2/Heretic 2 engine based Soldier of Fortune. Here's an excerpt:

The result of this mixture of minds is a title that falls pretty squarely between the extremes of Rainbow Six and Quake 2. From a very standard first person point of view, you run through level after level shooting just about anything that moves. In addition to shooting or stabbing the enemy with your 12 different weapons, you will be able to duck, crawl, lie prone and lean around corners. "The object is to simulate firefights in the real world where people duck and run for cover," says John Tam, the associate producer on the project, "we want this to be a lot like an action movie."

Here's more SoF preview action right here at the Shack.
