FRAG III Announced

Aug 17, 1999 2:56pm CST tags: CPL, zGeneral News
The CPL guys are just going nuts with all of the tournaments lately. If that $50,000 Descent3 tourney in Vegas enough, and that $10,000 Quake3 in New York City isnt enough, then maybe the CPL FRAG III in Dallas might float your boat? Here is the blurb:

The CPL has announced that FRAG III will take place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas, Texas on Friday, Oct. 29 through Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999. To obtain early hotel reservations contact the Hyatt Regency at 800-233-1234 and mention the "CPL FRAG III" to receive the discounted group rate. The FRAG III website will be launched in early September.

Aug 17, 1999 7:03am CST tags: zGeneral News
Yeah, I totally blew the suckage yesterday, but damn it at least I can't screw up the wacklinks ok? I'm still feeling guilty about how crappy that update was. Someone slap my knuckles with a ruler or something. At any rate have a look at the latest wack ass links list and marvel at the wonders of the web.

Super Batteries?

Aug 15, 1999 7:21pm CST tags: zGeneral News
Interesting story I dug up over at MSNBC for weekend reading, it looks like someone has finally found a new technology for batteries. "super iron" is what it's called and apparently offers 50% more energy storage among other things. No word on the expense or chances of this stuff ever seeing the light of day though. Sounds awful cool.

Macs in Heaven

Aug 14, 1999 6:20am CST tags: zGeneral News
I guess we should have seen it coming, it looks like God uses a Macintosh and he sent a sign to prove it A big wet one to the ArsTechnica guys for digging up the link which pretty much proves that we are all fools for using PCs. They only have Macs in heaven. Of course we're all going to hell for playing these violent games anyways so screw it eh?

Gameplay Technician!

Aug 13, 1999 2:52am CST tags: zGeneral News
If all those game developer job openings mentioned the other day werent enough for you, the Nihilistic folks have one more for you to consider. Gameplay Technician (sounds easy enough) Here is a bit of the description from Rob. Here are the details. from the loveable Fingershack.com

Nihilistic is looking for a driven and creative individual to join the Vampire team as a Gameplay Technician. The role involves working with the game's scripting language and data resources to create the coolest gameplay possible. This is where the "rubber meets the road" in terms of gameplay sequencing, scripting, combat and Discipline effects, etc. Also involves some level design, object placement, and AI tuning work.

Zeta-Jones as Lara Croft?

Aug 12, 1999 8:16pm CST tags: zGeneral News
The buzz (read: rumor) going on at the Movie Crypt is that Catherine Zeta-Jones has been "officially signed" to play the part of Eidos' cash chick, Lara Croft, in the upcoming Tomb Raider movie (I think I saw a poster for that a year ago). Here's the clip:

At a clandestine meeting at a Safe House in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of my minions (disguised as an international man of mystery) met his contact and learned a startling secret: Catherine Zeta-Jones has been officially signed to star as "Lara Croft" in the film version of Tomb Raider. Our contact cannot be identified for fear of what his underworld Hollywood connections might do to him, and moreso since we want him to keep talking!

We all know she's got the butt for the job (Entrapment anyone?), but as Andy, the reader who sent this info, so eloquently put it, "But does she have the boobs?"

Word?

Aug 12, 1999 2:39am CST tags: zGeneral News
Wow, no werd from Steve or Eh from Marcus... Looks like me and Clay have to hold up the fort, it's not like we have day jobs or anything :-) Seems Super Steve never swooped in with one of his famous 6am updates to save the day. :/ I'll pop in a few updates this morning I suppose. Hopefully Marcus and Clay can help pick up the slack some.

Bored? Go read yesterday's ShackWare, or go see The Iron Giant. Or you can even be one step ahead of Steve and join the Chevy and Geo Club on Yahoo. Here's a post by "LJ Daddy," who's 23 and Male:

Well during QuakeCon99 Huntsman was the man with a camera for a lot of the event and busted out taking a bunch of pictures for you guys and even took the time to describe every single one of them for you guys. Took him a couple of hours to do all that so I recommend you take a look. Or at least have a look at the pictures with the hooters chicks. If I may quote Austin Powers, "Nice rack!"

DDT on Red Hat Linux

Aug 09, 1999 3:32pm CST tags: zGeneral News
GA-Source spoke briefly with Dave Taylor, one of the father's of Linux gaming who is currently working at Transmeta, regarding his thoughts on the Red Hat IPO:

The bottom line is that I believe in what Red Hat is doing. Red Hat has a solid distribution and if a company has to pick a Linux distribution, they always pick Red Hat, and then they subscribe to Red Hat's service when the finance dept insists on having accountable firms for all products. Another healthy sign to me is that Red Hat spends money developing GNOME for Linux partly because they know that a solid GUI is the surest way to turn the tables on Microsoft, and they will always be positioned as the leading distribution and can only stand to benefit, even if the source is free. And I've had dealings with Marc Ewing and Bob Young. They execute on daring strategy, they have good chemistry, and they routinely hire the best people.

Speaking of GA, they've just slapped up 3 new Gothic shots.

More Freespace 2

Aug 09, 1999 2:57pm CST tags: zGeneral News
Freespace.org interviews Jasen Whiteside, lead artist on FS2, regarding the in-progress joining of MP games:

So what do you know about this issue of not being able to join in-progress multiplayer games?

It was the single-most buggy feature of the entire game and caused so much grief and trouble in multiplayer games that we finally (after many hours of deliberation, mind you) decided to rid ourselves of the thing which would only cause us and players no end of trouble.

It was with heavy hearts and much weeping that we came to this conclusion, but we really believed it had to be done. :(

And then PC Paradox posted a preview of Volition's upcoming space combat simulator, FreeSpace 2.

Neverwinter Nights

Aug 09, 1999 2:56pm CST tags: zGeneral News
IGN's been busy digging up more info on that new 3D RPG the world knew about a couple days ago, Neverwinter Nights. NGO is reported on it from the floor of GenCon and then PC.IGN goes the screenshot route.

Neverwinter Nights is set in the popular Forgotten Realms, stage of Baldur's Gate. This too is a point and click adventure that can be enjoyed as a single or multi-player phenomena. The similarities between the two, however, end there. Unlike Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights uses a free-floating camera that allows players to adjust the isometric view on the fly. The interface is equally simple; clicking on the character or item calls up a radial menu list with relevant options that surrounds the designated target like a scope. The menu is unobtrusive and intuitive.

Eh?

Aug 09, 1999 7:05am CST tags: zGeneral News
Welp, QuakeCon's (congrats to DieharD!) over so Huntsy and Steve are probably at the local Hooters or something. Those guys should be back soon with pictures from all over the event (and Hooters too?). I'm still strongly considering going to FP99... Not a whole lot of news at the moment, other than the wide load of Athlon articles -- almost had a heart attack thinking about linking all hundred of them or something.

WTF? My DNS died again! Damned @Home.

GenCon, The Other Con

Aug 08, 1999 3:25pm CST tags: zGeneral News
While QuakeCon is on everyone's mind, another con is going on -- GenCon. There's coverage from Blues with their bobo on the floor (part1, part2), and Glide Underground has their own story as well.
