Survey Reloaded

Nov 03, 2003 1:32pm CST tags: zGeneral News
We actually posted this on Friday since we wanted to get some numbers before the weekend. However since Friday isnt really the best day for something like that I'd like to submit to the rest of you ladies that perhaps you wouldnt mind spending a half minute of your time answering a few questions to help Maarten, Jason, and myself on our quest to not suck and stay in business.

- Shacknews Survey

Once again thank you a great deal for helping out, and please dont try to answer how you think we'd like to answer, keeping things as accurate is more beneficial to us. Also yes I realize how clever that headline is, sometimes it hurts to be so hip. You dig?

Boo! Yeah, Halloween's behind us, but it's time to update the ShackReviews database! This week we've got eight big new releases, including a new shooter from the people behind Allied Assault and this year's Tony Hawk game. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

Please note that in keeping with tradition around here, I will not be adding Final Fantasy XI for at least another week to stave off the knee-jerk reviews that are inevitable with any MMORPG launch. This week I spent playing Max Payne 2, and I have very mixed feelings about the game. On the one hand, it's a masterful action game. It moves by with blinding speed, and never slows down for a second, and it's got a great storyline. But then it's all over much too quickly, and aside from replaying it at higher difficulty levels, there's nothing left to do. I'll be posting my review soon, and that's basically the gist of it right there. This is a great, great game, but woefully short. It actually felt shorter to me than the first game (which was pretty darn short to begin with) which was definitely a surprise. I usually like games that don't drag on too long, but Max Payne 2 is just too short to recommend at full price. My advice? Wait for the price to come down a bit, and buy both games at the same time. Combined, the two games will still be shorter than something like Half-Life, but at least you'll get more than a week's gameplay out of it (for the record, I got just five days of gameplay out of Max Payne 2).

So as you folks probably realize these days, running a website without shutting down isnt exactly as easy as it used to be. A big part of what keeps things going for Maarten, Jason, and myself is the advertising you see here. I put in a significant amount of time making sure that we dont have to run those intrusive pop-ups or flash ads that take over your screen and the like. What you folks could do to really help without spending a dime to keep things going is to take 20-30 seconds to fill out our latest survey:

- Shacknews Survey

Please answer honestly! as that is the most important thing. If everyone fills out that they buy 20 games a month and we sell ads based on that and things dont work out, then we'll probably not get any future ads. We're all working very hard towards 2004 being an amazing year with Maarten here in the US, Jason brought in as a full timer, and all kinds of other fun stuff. Thanks for helping us out.

Like, cowabunga dudes! It's time to update the ShackReviews database! This week we've got six new games, including a much-anticipated addition to the Xbox Live lineup. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

Using the Apple Store gift certificate I got for renewing my .Mac account, I picked up the Mac version of UT2003 a few weeks back (just prior to my oath not to buy any games for the rest of the year, in case you're wondering). Although I've been using a Mac as my primary desktop machine for about a year now, this marks the first time I've actually bought a game specifically for OS X (WarCraft III doesn't count, as it's a hybrid game). Even when I was using a Windows machine as my desktop, I only kept one or two games on there (usually UT, Quake III or Counter Strike), since I have a separate machine for gaming. But there's something to be said about being able to jump into a quick deathmatch and get back to work without getting up. It's rekindled my love affair with deathmatch. Now if only someone could give me some indication of how long it's going to take for UT2004 to come out for this thing....

Grr! It's time to update the ShackReviews database. This week we've got five new games, including the spiritual successor to X-COM and one of those Sims-like games my wife likes so much. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

I've had a busy week here at the loonybin, but I always make time for gaming, and that time was spent pretty much equally between Ikaruga (which is amazing, but I'm still stuck on that fourth level) and the original Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Time hasn't been particularly good to Blood Omen, but I'm sticking with it anyway because the story and surrounding mythology is so good that it's worth it. But it's really been tough to stick with...the interface is absolutely atrocious, the gameplay a bit on the slow side, and there are loading screens every other minute. Since I have sworn off buying any games until next year (see here) I'll have plenty of time to play this and all the other games that have landed on my overflowing stack, the most recent of which is Max Payne 2, which I think I'll leap into as soon as I've polished off Kain.

Good afternoon! Whistle a jaunty tune as I prepare an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got five new additions, including a couple of very strange ones indeed. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

While I was adding The Neverhood to the database, I did some hunting around the web and dug up the game's original demo, which we've now got mirrored here at FileShack. Way back when, I really liked this game quite a bit, and while the gameplay hasn't held up all that well, this does have one of the best soundtracks you'll ever hear. If you missed it the first time around, I can't say there's a good chance you'll love it, because being a point n' click adventure game (and an FMV-heavy one at that) I don't think it's held up as well as some of the Monkey Island games...but the soundtrack's still as good as ever.

Gather 'round children, for it's time for an update to the ShackReviews database. This week we've got six new games, including the long-awaited PC debut of Halo and an RPG/RTS that has an unhealthy fascination with cows. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

My game playing this past week was mostly devoted to the super-cool (if somewhat limited in interaction) Snatcher for SegaCD, but later in the week my copy of Ikaruga arrived and I've been training myself in that ever since. I have a huge stack of unplayed games here, but I'm still very tempted to run out and get the Age of Mythology expansion, as I liked the original quite a bit. I was a little disappointed by the WarCraft III add-on (it was solid, but really dragged on there towards the end) so I hope I fare better with this one. As we're rapidly approaching the holiday season, there are some big titles on the horizon for the coming weeks, including Viewtiful Joe (next week), XIII, UFO: Aftermath and Max Payne 2 (two weeks), and the ultra-cool Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (first week in November). And of course, one of these days we'll finally have some idea when Half-Life 2 is coming out (which is good, because that 9600XT is looking really attractive to me right now).

L'shana tova! It's time for an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got seven new games, including two add-ons, two sports games and a unique strategy/shooter hybrid. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

I've got a copy of Homeworld 2 sitting right here next to me, but I must say, I'm scared by the reviews I've read here. I loved the first game (read: loved the game) but I never finished it because the damn thing was just too f#$&king hard. There was so much great stuff in there, but it was ultimately much too frustrating an experience for me to keep going. I had very high hopes for this sequel, but it sounds like Relic, much to my dismay, has neglected to either tone down the difficulty or add-in a difficulty slider for those of us who would rather not beat our heads against a wall after the umpteenth defeat. I swear, I tried everything with that first game. I even bought a strategy guide! Oh well. The add-on for Age of Mythology ships next week, so I won't be at any lack for strategy games, but I really wish Relic would come to their senses about this. I'm a pretty hard core gamer, and if I can't make it through, I can't even imagine how a newbie will be able to do it.

¡Aye caramba! It's time for an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got six new games, including the long-awaited full sequel to Homeworld, the latest game in the Jedi Knight series and would you believe a Simpsons version of Grand Theft Auto? As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

My gaming for the past week has been divided largely between Ys Book I & II for the Turbo Duo/Turbo CD and Soul Calibur II (with a few trips into Sonic CD for good measure). I posted my review of Soul Calibur II yesterday, and I imagine there are going to be some people who think I was being too hard on the game, but I stand behind my statement that the game, while very, very good, just doesn't try hard enough to move beyond its predecessor. Compare this with Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, which is a huge step up from VF3, and you could even make the argument that it's a larger step up from VF4 than Soul Calibur II is from the original Soul Calibur (although I don't totally agree with that). But of course, that doesn't mean I don't love SC2, because I do. In fact, I think I'll go play it right now.

Great googly moogly! It's time for an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got six new games, including the first Square RPG on a Nintendo platform since Super Mario RPG. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

In between long sessions of retro-gaming, I started playing Tron 2.0 last week. The game looks absolutely spectacular (really, it does) but I'm a little disappointed in what has so far been a fairly conventional FPS. I'm a big fan of the original movie, and so I'm really getting a kick out of seeing the world so well visualized, but I do wish the gameplay was a bit more interesting. It's not a bad game by any means, but it hasn't been able to hold my attention for more than an hour at a time. I had hoped for more from Monolith, who have proven in the past that they are capable of some really great FPS gameplay (I point to NOLF, and if you're open to something a bit different, Shogo: M.A.D. as well).

Sweet giant anteater of Santa Anita! It's time for an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got five new and recent games, including Sega's latest challenger to EA's throne and another add-on for Battlefield 1942. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

When I haven't been diving into some retro-gaming action or playing Soul Calibur II, I've continued to push my way through WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne. It's a good add-on, but I'm really surprised at how much harder this is than the regular game. I welcome the challenge, but there have been a couple of instances where I've gotten really frustrated. I can't remember the last time I've spent a good week on a single mission in an RTS. But I want to finish this up soon, as Tron 2.0 is glaring at me on my desk, and I can't wait to jump headfirst into that one.

Yowza! It's time for an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got four new additions, including the latest title in the biggest series in sports gaming. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

This week was a soft one, but next week we've got some huge titles coming out. The biggest one, as everyone probably knows by now, is Soul Calibur II (w00p!) but there's also F-Zero for GameCube, Tron 2.0 for PC, Buffy: Chaos Bleeds for all three consoles and NFL Fever and Otogi: Myth of Demons for Xbox. That's quite a week, and lot more exciting than we've had for some time.

Gah! It's time for an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got four new games, including the latest RPG from Black Isle Studios. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

In an incredible feat of stupidity, yesterday while working on the reviews system I managed to seriously damage the database. We were able to recover most of the data, but it looks like 40 or so reviews were lost in the ether. Oy. If yours was one of those reviews, please resubmit it if you still have it somewhere. I humbly apologize and hereby swear to make it up to you by playing Super Ghouls n' Ghosts until I'm ready to tear my hair out in frustration.

Jeez...is it time for an update to the ShackReviews database again? This week we've got a mix of new and older games, including the long-awaited debut of Silent Hill 3 and what is generally regarded as one of the hardest games ever made (if not the absolute hardest). As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

Last weekend I finished up Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and as noted in my review of the game, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was a lot shorter than I expected, but it's a great game, and shouldn't be missed by anyone who owns an Xbox and likes RPGs or Star Wars. After finishing that up, I've moved on to WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne, which is solid, although I seem to be stuck on one of the Sentinel missions and that's driving me nuts. But I'll get past it eventually. Next week is a big one indeed, as Madden 2004 will be out for practically every system imaginable, and we're just two weeks away from the release of Soul Calibur II and F-Zero GX. Yowza.

Holy crap! It's time for an update to the ShackReviews database! This week we've got five new games, including the latest Aliens vs. Predator game, and two oddball takes on golf. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

I'm still working my way through KOTOR (and loving it, by the way) but I still managed to find some time this weekend to fire up Battlefield 1942. I really like the game, although it's going to take me a while before I'm up to speed with everyone else here. I suppose I should ask "why didn't anyone tell me sooner how good this game was!?" but of course the answer to that is "everyone did you idiot!", so it's best not to dwell on that. I've played a couple of games online, but quickly backed off to practice offline first. I've gotten the hang of infantry, and my tank driving skillz are passable, but I'm having a really hard time manning the airplanes. Anyone have any tips there? Short of a brief unintentional kamikaze attack, I haven't been able to accomplish much of anything by air. But who cares...I'm having a great time regardless.

Whee...it's time for an update to the ShackReviews database. This week we've got four new games, including (after a one week wait) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

My gaming this week was all KOTOR, all the time, but nevertheless I installed a whole lot of new hardware in my game PC yesterday, specifically a new motherboard, CPU and a brand new case. The video card is still a problem, but I've decided to wait until ATI's next card gets announced before upgrading. Hopefully that will be soon, as Half-Life 2 is a lot sooner than most people realize, and I need to be ready. The new hardware's all working great, and I've seen significant performance increases across the board, although I am having some heating issues. Nothing drastic, and the individual components seem to be cooled properly, but the general system temperature is higher than I'd like it to be (it hit 40C yesterday a few times, and tends to hover around the 37-38 mark). I was sort of anticipating this, as my case only has two fans pre-installed, and I've ordered a couple of extra fans to compensate. As of right now all this new hardware is primarily being used for my Wife's Sims addiction, but any day now my traded-for copy of Battlefield 1942 should arrive, and I'm very much looking forward to finally getting to try this game out.

FileShack Alarm Sound?

Jul 21, 2003 12:33pm CST tags: zGeneral News
So we're finally getting around to adding the option of an audio alarm whenever your file is ready on Fileshack if you're stuck waiting in the queue. Especially important given the um... "inaccuracy" of the current wait estimates. The only problem is deciding on what kind of sound to use so I figured you guys would be good to ask right?

So, any ideas on an alarm sound ladies? Something that is legal to use and wont get us sued preferably. As interesting as a recording of a fart may be, that might not be appropriate. :(

If you'd like to create your own sound and have it in lights just post a link in the comments.

Oh good lord, it's time for an update to the ShackReviews database. This week we've got a pair of new games and a handful of older ones for you, including two of the highest regarded RPGs of all time. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

As I received far more requests to hold off than to add it this week, I will be waiting at least another week before adding Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Given the size of the game, this should give people more time to formulate their true feelings about the game before reviewing it. Speaking of which, I picked it up yesterday at my local GameStop, and am looking forward to giving it a whirl later on this afternoon. I finished up the first game in Final Fantasy Origins, and am quite proud of myself for doing so...that last dungeon was absolutely insane!

Well I'll be..it's time for another update to the ShackReviews database. As there were no major releases this week (or at least, nothing anyone submitted, anyway), we've got five older titles today. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

It seems like I spent more time mailing games to other people this weekend than actually playing any (explanation here), but nonetheless I did get in some time with Final Fantasy I. I must say...some of those dungeons in the game are absolutely brutal. While I'm no fan of random monster attacks (I feel the whole idea is a bit dated, to be honest) they seem extra-specially annoying in this game. And I've found the game has a remarkable sense of knowing when to throw really hard monsters at me (like when I'm down to only a miniscule amount of health and mere steps away from a town or exit). Still, it makes up for it with surprisingly softball boss fights, or at least it has so far (and I'm a little more than halfway through the game) so I'm going to tough it out.

Aye maties, it's time for another update to the ShackReviews database! We've got an unusually PC-centric list this week, with six titles, including the long-awaited Star Wars Galaxies and the game formerly known as Sea Dogs 2. As usual, if there's a game you want to review but don't see in the database, check first and then submit it! (And don't blame me if a game you never submitted isn't added!)

That last one up there I had to add earlier in the week in order to publish my own review of the game, and I was surprised it wasn't already in there. Regardless, with Morrowind put aside for now, I've turned to a wildly different RPG...I started playing Final Fantasy Origins the other day, and I'm having a blast with it. They've upgraded the original Final Fantasy significantly...it's no FFX, but they did crank it up to SNES-level, which considering that the game was an early NES title is quite an improvement. The gameplay hasn't changed all that much, which means it's a little rough around the edges in places, but it's still a lot of fun, and it makes for a nice change of pace from the hardcore RPG experience that is Morrowind.
