Mirror's Edge, Dead Space Break 1 Million

Feb 03, 2009 4:28pm CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Dead Space, Software Sales
During a conference call today, EA CFO Eric Brown noted that both EA Redwood Shores' Dead Space and DICE's Mirror's Edge sold over one million copies each in 2008.

The figure includes all versions of the games that were released in 2008. The action-horror shooter Dead Space was available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, while the first-person parkour game Mirror's Edge hit PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008.

As the PC version of Mirror's Edge followed the console editions in mid-January of 2009, its sales numbers were not reflected in the total 2008 sales.

Brown did not touch on known planned sequels for either game, though EA CEO John Riccitiello noted that "games with a 2 on them sell better" and have lower R&D costs.

Mirror's Edge DLC Delayed

Update: Electronic Arts has confirmed the delay with Shacknews, writing that developer DICE deemed it necessary in order to provide "a completely smooth experience."

The $10 Pure Time Trial Map Pack is now expected to hit PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February, with the free PS3-exclusive "Synethesia" map still coming tomorrow.

Original: Once expected tomorrow, the downloadable content for Mirror's Edge may have suffered a slight delay, according to a PlayStation.Blog post by producer Tom Farrer.

A free PlayStation 3-exclusive map for the parkour game will be released tomorrow, he wrote, noting that the full "Pure Time Trial Map Pack" wouldn't hit until early February.

Publisher Electronic Arts had previously specified a January 29 release for the $10 pack, which adds seven maps and nine races to the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

EA Suggests Dead Space, Mirror's Edge Sequels Are Safe Despite Cuts

Dec 09, 2008 4:20pm CST tags: Electronic Arts, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, Mirrors Edge, Mirrors Edge 2
While lowered expectations have caused Electronic Arts to consider axing some games, the company has suggested that the planned sequels for EA Redwood Shores' Dead Space and DICE's Mirror's Edge will not be affected by the upcoming cuts.

"Dead Space looks like a long-term big winner for us," EA CEO John Riccitiello stated during a conference call today. "Mirror's Edge is one that was very strongly reviewed. That one's gonna go forward--we'll be looking at some issues around the design to make sure strong IP is married with strong business."

Riccitiello added: "Many times, what happens with new IP is the first edition doesn't generate the units that subsequent editions could generate."

The CEO also touched on the recent release of Mythic's Warhammer Online, stating his belief that the PC MMO "will continue to perform very very well."

Analyst: Weak Sales of Mirror's Edge, Rock Band 2 Could Mean More EA Cuts

Dec 08, 2008 9:40pm CST tags: Analyst, Rock Band 2, Mirrors Edge, Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts titles such as Mirror's Edge, Rock Band 2 and Need for Speed Undercover are expected to underperform this holiday season, and could spell more product and personnel cuts for the publisher, according to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian.

"Specifically, we believe several EA titles are tracking below plan at retail this holiday, including Need for Speed Undercover (with disappointing reviews), new franchise Mirror's Edge, and Rock Band 2," said Sebastian, as relayed by Gamasutra.

Lazard predicts that a sluggish season could mean more layoffs for EA--in addition to the October 30 slashing of 600 jobs--and product cancellations, such as the company's recent termination of EA LA's Tiberium.

"Importantly, we believe EA is continuing to review its cost structure and franchise base, and it is possible that management will announce further cuts in headcount and the development pipeline (including existing franchises) over the coming quarters," added Sebastian.

While hard sales data of holiday titles has not yet been released, Lazard's "tracking" bills the aforementioned games as slower-than-expected sellers. However, Sebastian noted that Dead Space, FIFA 09 and Left 4 Dead have seen strong sales in spite of the overall disappointment.

Mirror's Edge PC Release January 13; Time Trial DLC Late January

Dec 04, 2008 8:18am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, DLC
Following up on an earlier promise for more information at a later date, DICE today announced that the first DLC for Mirror's Edge will be a time trial map pack.

The seven maps will be available for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 for $10 or 800 Microsoft Points. The PlayStation 3 version will also receive an additional map for free.

"The freedom of movement and control in first person has been the most popular aspect of Mirror's Edge so we decided to distil these down to their purest form for this map pack," said DICE senior producer Owen O'Brien, adding, "We deliberately chose a more abstract aesthetic that is still within our distinctive art style and then focused on flow and gameplay to create an experience and challenge very different from the main game."

The DLC will ship late January.

DICE also announced that the PC version of the game will ship to North American stores January 13, with the international release following January 16.

Mirror's Edge DLC, PC Version Coming Early Next Year

Nov 11, 2008 11:37am CST tags: Mirrors Edge, DLC
In celebration of the pending Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 release of DICE's Mirror's Edge, EA has promised downloadable content for the first-person parkour action game and a January release for the PC port, which was delayed back in September.

"To keep the action coming after launch, DICE is currently developing downloadable content that will be available at the beginning of the year. More details to be announced shortly," reads a press release from the publisher.

The release may be short on details, but Sony has previously flaunted exclusive DLC for the PlayStation 3 version of the game. However, that exclusivity could apply to a specific level or release, not DLC in general, leaving the PC and 360 versions open to DLC.

Meanwhile, a specific date has not been set for the delayed PC version. Rather, only a release window of January is known at this time.

Update: Downloadable content for Mirror's Edge will be released in both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 form, EA DICE confirmed with GameCyte.

EA CEO Put the Mirrors in Mirror's Edge, Likes Risks

Oct 16, 2008 2:20pm CST tags: Mirrors Edge, Electronic Arts
Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello was responsible for the plentiful reflective surfaces in DICE's Mirror's Edge because he "pushed the bejesus" for the game to be third-person, according to a recent interview.

As part of a Gamasutra interview series, Riccitiello revealad he was "a little freaked out" over making a first-person game that wasn't a shooter. Instead, Mirror's Edge is a first-person game inspired by parkour running.

"I was really wrong about the third-person thing," he admitted in the wake of rising hype for the game. But he got what he wanted in the concession of adding mirrors. "I got mirrors so you can see [Faith, the game's protagonist]," he said.

The CEO touted parts of the publisher's holiday portfolio as signs... Read more
