X-Men Movie

Feb 17, 2000 6:38pm CST tags: Wack News
Since we're all pretty much geeks at heart, I figure a lot of you would be excited to see the X-Men movie trailer which has just shown up on the website. I expected this to be another POS but the trailer actually looks at least interesting. Doubtful the plot will be worth a damn but at least it may be cool to look at. Thanks JaGa

Blame Canada

Feb 15, 2000 5:31pm CST tags: Wack News
Just spotted this bit from the ArsTechnica guys. Amazingly enough one of the songs from the SouthPark movie (Blame Canada) actually got nominated for an Oscar. Along with SouthPark were movies like Toy Story2, Tarzan, Magnolia, and Music of the Heart. Not really sure how they let that one slip into the mix, one can only imagine the acceptance speech from Trey Parker though :)

Wacky Stuff From CNN

Feb 12, 2000 11:04pm CST tags: Wack News
Yeah, a bit lite on the real news, so here's something I haven't done for a few weeks... Some of the fun stuff to be found on cnn.com, and finding clever ways to pin them on Maarten...

Florida police nab suspected potty thief - Ok, actually, I think this one was Clay...
Police save goldfish from becoming artistic soup - Fish + Blenders + Power Outlets = Artsy fun!
Arranged marriage results in masked Las Vegas wedding - Here's the Maarten one.

Oh, and a bonus prize, if you make it to the comments quick, you can find valience talking about how worthless I am :-)

YO YO YO

Feb 12, 2000 10:43pm CST tags: Wack News
Hey, I'm bored. And nothing interesting is happening lately. Anybody watching the NBA dunk contest on TNT? I can do that. Honest. Well no, I'm white. Discuss here who your favorite ball player is, why Carter has already won, and the obligatory "sports sucks, only sitting on your tail and playing quake 24/7 is cool!".

Internet Under Attack

Feb 09, 2000 3:13am CST tags: Wack News
Hacker groups have talked about stuff like this for years, but it looks like someone is finally pulling it off. An unknown person or party have managed to create the most impressive Denial of Service attacks ever (another story on ABC). Within the past 30 hours they have taken Yahoo, CNN, eBay, Buy.com, and Amazon.com all offline for multiple hours.

All five assaults were what are known as denial-of-service attacks, which entails someone bombarding a site with mock traffic. What results is an Internet traffic jam, effectively blocking out users. All of this week’s attacks appeared to be coordinated efforts from multiple points on the Internet.

Bake Me A Slayer!

Feb 08, 2000 11:59pm CST tags: Wack News
Here's the customary potpourri comment story for you guys :) How about that Buffy/Angel tonight, eh? Good fight scenes, good plots, and a cliffhanger that had everyone in the room all yelling and stuff. For those of you who don't catch the best shows on TV, check em out... Steve even said, and I quote, "You best not be calling me on da phone during Buffy, woman!" And this was to his mom, no less. For shame!

We're All Gonna Die

Feb 08, 2000 4:37pm CST tags: Wack News
Just a quick note for you guys that it looks like we're in fact all going to die. It's a bummer but oh well. It's been fun. This is the 3rd time it seems that someone has figured out we're all gonna die though. First we were gonna blow up, then sucked up by a black hole, but I think this one is it. I'm not a gambling man though so I dont understand that whole 1 in a billion chance thing.

Astronomers have discovered an asteroid flying through space that could crash into the Earth in 2022, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Pirate Busted

Feb 07, 2000 4:03am CST tags: Wack News
An interesting turn of events on the software piracy front. It looks like long time software pirating group PWA has had one of their 'council members' busted by the FBI. The sad thing is the FBI and press are making a huge deal out of busting a single member of a single warez group. Albeit he's a bigwig...

Warm It Up Kris!

Feb 05, 2000 2:18pm CST tags: Wack News
A few people sent in this very exciting news for the recording industry. With all my hopes and concentration on the possible New Kids On The Block reunion tour I had almost forgotten (and lost hope) of something that's even more exciting and dear to my heart. A new Kriss Kross album!

Kris Kross hit pop paydirt at age 13 with the 1992 No. 1 single "Jump," are putting the finishing touches on their fourth studio album. The as-yet-untitled set is due this summer on producer Joe Nicolo's new imprint, Judgment Records.

On Napster Banning

Feb 03, 2000 7:44am CST tags: Wack News
If you're a student at a college where administrators blocked Napster, maybe this guide I found will help you get past the blocking through a proxyserver. There's a section on starting a proxy server in Linux and they have links to Windows proxy servers too.
update: you can also try the following solution sent to us by Woburn, provided this is the way your school banned Napster too:

My college also blocked Napster, but we found an easy way around their ban because they only banned it through their name server. By simply adding:
208.184.216.238 www.napster.com
208.184.216.223 server.napster.com
to the "hosts.sam" file in my windows directory, then by renaming it to just "hosts". Napster works thank to this, and with IE i can get to the website, but for some reason Netscape doesn't work, and I just wanted Napster to work so I haven't bothered trying to make it work.

AOL 5.0 Lawsuit

Feb 02, 2000 3:40pm CST tags: Lawsuit, Wack News
Just because this is entertaining to watch. AOL is having a 8billion dollar lawsuit filed against them by 'Disgruntled AOL 5.0 users'. With all the stink that has been coming up about AOL 5.0 removing your internet settings for other adapters and ISPs. Lots of people are losing lots of work time. You can bet a few people in the AOL software department are sweating that pink slip.

The suit, alleging a deceptive trade practice and violation of computer-tampering laws, seeks damages of up to $1,000 for each of the approximately 8 million people who have downloaded the software.

We're All Gonna Die

Sep 16, 1999 12:43pm CST tags: Wack News
In case you guys had any doubt, we're all gonna die. It's just a matter of when right? Well this guy is working on something that should help us all on our way if he blows it. Those monkeys at ArsTechnica spotted this one. Yeah, this article is a bit old.. but as NBC says, it's new to you! (maybe)

We're Gonna Blow Up

Sep 08, 1999 5:00am CST tags: Wack News
In case you werent sure if the world was gonna blow up on January 1st, 2000 you probably want to read this article on Yahoo that the ArsTechnica monkeys found. We are all basically screwed and gonna die. Make sure and be near some hot chicks before it hits, if you're ever gonna score that would probably be good idea. They claim they will be able to get all the systems updated in time. When was the last time the government hit a deadline though?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Tuesday that 28 nuclear power reactors need to upgrade their computers to avoid possible Y2K computer problems...
