Might & Magic Creator Helms New Fantasy MMO, Console-hating Company Becomes PS3 Publisher

Accompanying its announcement of a partnership with the Sci-Fi Channel, Trion has revealed its first project as well as unveiled its newfound status as a licensed PlayStation 3 publisher.

Trion made headlines last year when its CEO and former EA VP Lars Buttler expressed his belief that "the days of the console are numbered," with "one more generation of gaming consoles and that is it."

The company's first title will be a fantasy MMO led Jon Van Caneghem, the creator of the classic PC role-playing franchise Might & Magic. As with the Sci-Fi announcement, few details were provided.

Trion, Sci-Fi Channel Partner for New Franchise

Publisher Trion World Network and cable network Sci-Fi Channel have entered into an agreement to co-develop a new franchise through video games and television programs.

No details were provided on the project, though the companies noted that "the cross-platform design will allow the storyline and the universe to grow and expand over time, building depth and dynamically evolving the world."

"Trion's San Diego studio and our platform and publishing groups in Austin and Redwood City will work closely with Sci Fi's creative team in developing a dynamically evolving, massively social, connected entertainment franchise across multiple formats and platforms of choice," explained Trion CEO and co-founder Lars Buttler.

"We are laying the foundation for an exciting new co-development model between top cable entertainment and lifestyle brands such as Sci-Fi and connected game and interactive entertainment companies such as Trion," he concluded.
