Silent Hill PSP Announced for PS2

Jan 22, 2008 12:15pm CST tags: Ready at Dawn, Konami, Rockstar, Tecmo, Silent Hill Origins, Sony
Confirming recent rumors, Konami today announced that a PlayStation 2 version of the former PSP-exclusive Silent Hill Origins is in development.

Released on PSP last fall, Silent Hill Origins details the exploits of hallucinating trucker Travis Gordy as he explores the creepy-as-hell town of Silent Hill. Konami mentioned that the game would sport updated controls, through no further details, such as a release date or developer, were provided. It is believed that Climax Studios, which handled the PSP edition, is behind the PS2 version.

"Console gamers can now expect the same chilling, suspenseful and fear-filled experience that handheld gamers encountered when we released Silent Hill Origins on the PSP system," said Konami marketing VP Anthony Crouts.

Silent Hill Origins marks the latest PSP title to be ported to the PS2, following in the footsteps of such former exclusives as Rockstar Leeds' Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories, Tecmo's Tokobot, Sony Bend's Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, and High Impact Games' Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters. A PS2 port of Ready at Dawn's upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP) is heavily rumored as well.

Ninja Gaiden DS Slated for March

Dec 20, 2007 6:36pm CST tags: Tecmo, Ninja Gaiden DS, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword
Team NINJA's Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword (NDS), the studio's portable take on the adventures of famed video game ninja Ryu Hayabusa, will slash its way to North American retailers this March.

Much like Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (NDS), Ninja Gaiden DS is controlled almost entirely through the touch screen. A downloadable demo of the third-person action game is currently available through the DS Download Stations scattered throughout retailers such as GameStop, Target, and Wal-Mart.

"Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword brings a new level of gaming action to the Nintendo DS," said Tecmo marketing manager Yoh Watanabe. "There's currently a demo available on the DS Download Station and I urge everyone to try it out and you'll know what I mean."

Ninja Gaiden 2 Screens Show Blood, Severed Limbs

Dec 19, 2007 9:23am CST tags: Tecmo, Ninja Gaiden 2, Ninja Gaiden
Tecmo-owned developer Team NINJA has provided four more images of Ninja Gaiden II, the Xbox 360-exclusive sequel to one of the more frustratingly challenging Xbox, and later PlayStation 3, titles ever released.

Included in the bloody barrage are glimpses of severed arms and legs, along with a few decapitations. The game itself is due out at some point in 2008.

Xbox 360 Outsells PlayStation 3 in Japan; Mario and Ace Combat Top Software Charts

Nov 09, 2007 3:06pm CST tags: Konami, Namco, Tecmo, Square Enix, Hardware (console only), Sony, Software Sales
In an unusual week of Japanese hardware sales, Microsoft's slow-selling Xbox 360 saw 475% week-over-week growth in unit sales to edge out Sony's PlayStation 3 by mere hundreds of units--17,637 to 17,434, according to tracking firm Media Create.

Microsoft's console was buoyed by Namco's exclusive Ace Combat 6, which slotted in at #2 on the hardware charts with 76,708 units. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo's marquee title Super Mario Galaxy topped the weekly list with 250,585 units. The debut was lower than some expected given the higher first-week sales of Super Mario Sunshine (GCN) and other flagship games from the Big N, but still outsold any other game by more than three to one during the week of October 29 to November 4.

Despite the bitter battle between the two high-powered consoles, both machines were outsold by the Wii, which topped Xbox 360 by about 20,000 units. Still, the release of Mario's latest outing didn't significantly bump Wii sales, and PSP came in #2 with 59,714 despite having no software in the top ten. In the least surprising news of the week, Nintendo DS trumped all by besting PSP by about 20,000 units.

Nintendo platforms dominated software, with two Wii titles and six DS titles. The other slots were occupied by Ace Combat 6 and a Banpresto-developed Super Robot Wars title for PlayStation 2 that slotted in at #4. Read on for the full list.... Read more

TurboGrafx-CD Hits Virtual Console; Ninja Gaiden 2 and Metal Marines Arrive Too

Oct 15, 2007 10:34am CST tags: Namco, Tecmo, Virtual Console, Games: Console, Ninja Gaiden 2, Ninja Gaiden
The Wii Virtual Console's first CD-based TubroGrafx-16 offering, Gates of Thunder, will be available today via the download service. With the first Neo Geo titles arriving last week, the addition of games for the once-costly TurboGrafx-CD add-on marks the second platform to debut in the online store in just as many weeks.

Developed by TurboGrafx extraordinaire Red Entertainment and system manufacturer Hudson Soft, Gates of Thunder is a side scrolling arcade shooter highly regarded for the top notch rocking tunes made possible through its use of the compact disc format. It sells for 800 Wii Points ($8), the standard price for TurboGrafx-CD titles. Another TurboGrafx-CD game, Red's Super Air Zonk, is scheduled to arrive this month.

Along with Gates of Thunder, Virtual Console also sees the release of Tecmo's ninja-tastic side scrolling NES sequel, Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, and Namco's obscure SNES strategy title, Metal Marines. Ryu Hayabusa's second appearance runs 500 Wii Points ($5), whereas humanity's metal-oriented struggle against the Imperial Federation goes for 800 Wii Points ($8).

Next Fatal Frame Coming to Wii, Killer 7 Developer Producing

Sep 26, 2007 12:17pm CST tags: Tecmo, Fatal Frame Wii
Tecmo's freaky horror series Fatal Frame will make its next appearance on Nintendo's Wii, the company told 1up. Perhaps even more bizarre, Killer 7 developer Grasshopper Manufacture will produce the title as soon as the avant garde studio has finished worked on its first Wii title, the beam sword hitman-themed title No More Heroes.

Fatal Frame series designer Keisuke Kikuchi will of course return for the Wii title, aided by Grasshopper Manufacture's eccentric Goichi Suda, known as Suda 51. The Shack recently previewed Grasshopper's own No More Heroes at the Tokyo Game Show and came away with fairly positive impressions, implying the developer will at least be able to aid Tecmo in its second Wii outing.

Thus far, Super Swing Golf, which Kikuchi produced, marks the only Wii title Tecmo has released for Nintendo's platform. The previous three Fatal Frame titles have all retailed for PlayStation 2 or Xbox. Tecmo didn't give an estimate of when the Wii-specific survival horror title would hit shelves.

Mario Golf Devs Bringing Wii Golf Game Stateside

Sep 14, 2007 6:51pm CST tags: Capcom, Tecmo, Games: Console
Capcom confirmed today its previously announced We Love Golf! from Mario Golf and Hot Shots Golf developer Camelot will be released in North America. The Wii-specific title will be available sometime in 2008.

The title will retail in Japan this winter. The visuals from the project's Japanese website and the similar name indicate it is most likely an adaptation of Camelot's canceled PC project Golf Daisuki: I Love Golf. The PC title was supposed to be offered as part of an online entertainment service that never materialized.

The announcement describes We Love Golf! as "a realistic golfing experience with a fresh new spin," and the game incorporates detection of fades or draws with wrist movements. Hopefully the title will bring more to the table than Tecmo's Super Swing Golf, released for the Wii last year.

Camelot and Capcom Declare Wii Love Golf

Aug 29, 2007 5:40pm CST tags: Capcom, Tecmo, We Love Golf
Hot Shots Golf and Mario Golf creator Camelot is stepping up to the tee once again with the cleverly named Wii Love Golf. First revealed in the most recent edition of Japanese gaming publication Weekly Famtisu, it unsurprisingly has players swinging the Wii Remote like a golf club, a familiar convention after Nintendo's Wii Sports, Tecmo's Super Swing Golf, and two editions of EA Sports' Tiger Woods PGA Tour.

Responsible for the initial entry in the Hot Shots Golf series on the original PlayStation, Camelot went on to create N64 and GBC editions of Mario Golf while Clap Hanz took over the Hot Shots Golf franchise. GameCube and Game Boy Advance editions of both Mario-based properties followed thereafter.

Published by Capcom, Wii Love Golf arrives in Japan this winter. Shacknews has contacted Capcom regarding a North American release.

  • Tony Hawk's next game revealed

    [ps2] [ps3] [xbox360] [wii] [ds]

Activision has released initial details of Neversoft's next entry in its longrunning yearly Tony Hawk skating series. Tony Hawk's Proving Ground is in development for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS, and is said to offer the greatest amount of freedom and most customization available in Tony Hawk game to date. Unlike last year's Tony Hawk titles, which were split into Tony Hawk's Project 8 for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam for Wii, Nintendo DS, and eventually PlayStation 2, this year will feature a single unified game across all platforms.

Proving Ground will include a video editor, new moves for Nail the Trick, and the ability to transition seamlessly from single-player to online play. "Tony Hawk's Proving Ground drops players into the skateboarding world like never before," said Neversoft president Joel Jewett. "This is the largest, deepest and most compelling Tony Hawk game ever. You can skate the best lines, define your own style and produce your own videos. You can even take it further by tricking out your own Skate Lounge, where you can hang out and skate with others online."

Neversoft's Tony Hawk's Proving Ground is set to ship for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS this fall. Activision sent over several screenshots taken from the Xbox 360 version of the game.

  • Square Enix confirms North American releases

    [ps3] [xbox360] [wii] [ds] [psp]

Following last weekend's announcements in Tokyo, publisher Square Enix's North American operations have confirmed numerous games for planned domestic release.

TOSE's Dragon Quest Monsters - Joker (NDS), the first game in the Dragon Quest Monsters RPG series to feature online play, will be released in North America in Q4 2007. The game was released in the Japanese market last December.

8ing and Genius Sonority's sword-swinging RPG, Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Wii), has been confirmed for a North American release but has not yet been given a release date projection. When first announced, the game was intended as a Wii launch title.

Two titles from the so-called Ivalice Alliance--a loose series of games set in Ivalice, the backdrop to the Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII franchises--were also confirmed. Square Enix and Think & Feel's Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings (NDS), the real-time strategy sequel to Final Fantasy XII, will be released this winter in North America. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, a PSP remake of Square's Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1), is set to ship in North America this October. There was no mention of a North American release for Final Fantasy Tactics A2, the sequel to Square's Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) and another member of the Ivalice Alliance.

Finally, Square Enix reiterated that its newly announced game, The Last Remnant, will be seeing a simultaneous release in North America and Japan. The game has no stated release projection.

Aegis Wing will be freely downloadable for "a limited time" as of Wednesday, May 16.

  • Ninja invade Virtual Console with Spirit and Gaiden

    [wii]

Two of this week's three Virtual Console additions for Wii are themed around ninja, as Tecmo contributes its classic action game Ninja Gaiden (NES, 1 player) and Hudson Soft offers Irem's Ninja Spirit (TurboGrafx-16, 1 player). Rounding out the list is Namco's familiar round hero, Pac-Man, who is present in his NES incarnation (1-2 players). Pac-Man and Ninja Gaiden are available for 500 Wii Points ($5) each, while Ninja Spirit runs 600 Wii Points ($6). All three games are now available.

  • Tecmo Bowl returns!

    [ps3] [xbox360] [wii]

During a Tecmo press event held in Japan yesterday, the publisher announced that it is bringing the much-loved Tecmo Bowl franchise out of retirement with a brand new game: Tecmo Bowl 2008. While no specific platform was announced, the game was said to be coming to one of the new current-gen systems and is not a port of a previous Tecmo Bowl game.

Following the release of the original Tecmo Bowl on NES in 1989, additional games in the series were developed for NES, Super NES, Genesis, and Game Boy, with the NES game appearing on Wii's Virtual Console earlier this year.

Tecmo Bowl 2008 is being developed by Team Tachyon, a new internal Tecmo team whose formation was announced during the event. Helmed by Fatal Frame series producer Keisuke Kikuchi, Team Tachyon will be one of Tecmo's marquee developers along with Ninja Gaiden producer Tomonobu Itagaki's Team NINJA.

No gameplay footage or screenshots of the new game were shown. As its moniker suggests, Tecmo Bowl 2008 is planned for release in 2008.

  • Rygar returns on Wii

    [wii]

Tecmo plans to revisit its Rygar series of action/adventure games on the Wii, the publisher announced at its Tokyo press event yesterady. Currently known by the working title Project Rygar, the new game will feature a revamped protagonist design, new enemies, and new locations--but will retain the iconic chained shield for which the titular hero is known. Of course, the motion-sensitive Wii remote will control the swinging weapon.

Tecmo's original Rygar was released for arcades in 1986, with a followup game developed for NES and numerous other console and PC platforms in 1987. No new entries in the series were created until 15 years later, when Tecmo released Rygar: The Legendary Adventure for PlayStation 2 to a warm response in 2002.

No release period was given for Rygar, but Tecmo expects to show more of the game in the coming months.

  • Crackdown DLC deleting save files

    [xbox360]

According to numerous reports from gamers, including threads on Shacknews and the official Crackdown forums, Realtime Worlds' recently released and admirably expansive downloadable content for Crackdown (X360) suffers from a bug that deletes users' save games in certain situations. Apparently, joining a cooperative game in one of the newly added game modes, then leaving the game, will completely wipe out the save game, which includes character progression and completed boss missions.

A Crackdown team member going by the alias "Agent G" stated that Realtime Worlds is looking into the problem:

"hey guys - just so you know, we are aware of the situation and working on it. as soon as we have a fix or workaround i'll let you know. i'll post info right here on these forums, I'm just waiting to hear from the guys on the test team about a solid fix or workaround."

When contacted for comment, a Microsoft representative responded, "We are aware that the recently released "Crackdown" DLC is causing some gamers to experience a reset of their saved games when they engage in co-op play. We have identified this problem and outlined instructions to avoid the issue, which can be found by visiting the official 'Crackdown' site. A permanent solution will be released with the game's next Title Update, which will be available in the very near future."

To ensure that a save file is protected after downloading the new content, perform the following Microsoft-provided steps:
    - Sign-in to Xbox Live
    - Start Crackdown and receive new Title Update (if you haven't already)
    - Begin a Single Player Campaign game
    - Once loaded, press Start and choose "Quit"
    - Reboot Crackdown (soft reboot or hard reboot of console)

There is no way to restore data lost due to the glitch.

  • Rock Band in the works for Wii, featuring all-genuine recordings?

    [ps3] [xbox360] [wii]

According to an unnamed source cited by GameSpot, Harmonix Music Systems' upcoming peripheral-based music group simulator Rock Band is heading to Wii as well as the previously announced PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The source, which GameSpot claims has a track record of reliability, was allegedly part of a Rock Band focus group which was told that Rock Band is being developed for Wii.

The source also put forward the encouraging rumor that all tracks included in the game will be based on original artist recordings rather than cover band recordings. Harmonix's Guitar Hero (PS2) and Guitar Hero II (PS2, X360) consisted of largely cover recordings, with a few original master tracks.

Finally, the reader noted that focus group participants were asked for their reactions to various bundle price points for Rock Band. Session organizers proposed a bundle containing the game, a wireless guitar controller, a drum controller, and a microphone controller at three potential prices--$200, $175, and $150. Based on the unconfirmed prices released by retailer GameStop last month, such a package would run $259.96 if its individual components were purchased individually.

Electronic Arts plans to ship Harmonix's Rock Band this fall.

  • The Soul(calibur) still burns...

    [wii]

Though already confirmed, Namco Bandai officially announced the latest entry in its Soulcalibur series, Soulcalibur Legends for the Wii. Scheduled for release this winter, Legends' third person action adventure gameplay sets it apart from past iterations of the fighting franchise, which began with Namco's 1995 arcade fighter Soul Edge.

Telling the tale of 16th century empire on the verge of ruin, Soulcalibur Legends follows the actions of Siegfried and other characters, both new and familiar. Performing what today's announcement described as "orchestrated slashes and movements" with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, players will fight their way through a number of enemies, bosses, and gameplay modes.

  • Bungie lead writer pens new Halo novel

    [xbox] [xbox360]

Tor Books has unveiled details on Halo: Contact Harvest, the fifth book based off Bungie's Halo franchise. Unlike past Halo novels, which were written by Eric Nylund and William C. Dietz, Contact Harvest comes directly from Bungie lead writer and first-time novelist Joseph Staten.

Slated to arrive in bookstores on October 2, 2007, Halo: Contact Harvest details the beginnings of humanity's conflict with the Covenant from the perspective of the ever-demanding Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson.

"It goes without saying that Joseph has great, intimate knowledge of the Halo universe, so who better to tell the harrowing tale of humanity's first contact with the Covenant?" explained Tor Editor Eric Raab. "In the novel, Joseph not only reveals exciting nuances of known events and characters such as Sgt. Johnson. But he also breaks new ground--takes readers on an action-packed journey to a little-known but vital part of the Halo universe: the far-flung, ill-fated word of Harvest."

  • New Simpsons game likely announced soon

[ps2] [ps3] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [wii] [ds] [psp] [gba]

Over the weekend, internet detectives spotted a countdown site hosted on the official Electronic Arts site, which many have taken as a sign that EA plans to unveil its upcoming game based on animated series The Simpsons. The page features a yellow background, text in the font faced used in The Simpsons' promotional material, and a large "XXII" in the same font and color scheme as that used on the "IV" on Rockstar Games' recent countdown page promoting Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, X360). The timer is set to expire on Wednesday at 12:00pm. The "XXII" most likely refers to the number of total games based on the license.

In November 2005, EA announced that it had acquired the video game rights to The Simpsons, which were previously held by Vivendi Universal. Vivendi released Radical Entertainment's critically and commercially successful The Simpsons: Hit & Run (PS2, Xbox, GCN, PC), following a string of less well received titles.

In the last several hours, the EA site became unreachable, and currently states, "The following error has occurred: Web Page Not Found Error." Somewhat oddly, following a standard error explanation, the page concludes with the phrase "See you tomorrow."

Shacknews has sent further inquiries to EA but has yet to receive a response.

  • Revised PS3 in the works?

    [ps3]

Citing unnamed sources within Sony, Australian technology site Smarthouse is reporting that a new model of Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation 3 could be released within 18 months. According to Smarthouse's alleged source, this new machine would retain the existing PS3's Cell processor (and presumably its RSX GPU) but would add significant media capabilities. New features would allegedly include a packed-in media streaming software suite, as well as possible server functionality.

The product described is reminiscent of the PlayStation 2-based PSX hardware released to the Japanese market in 2003. PSX included a digital video recorder and media transfer capabilities, as well as all standard PS2 functions. Following its release, the device failed to reach significant commercial success and did not see worldwide distribution.

Recently retired SCEI CEO Ken Kutaragi, chief architect of the PlayStation line, has spoken about PlayStation 3 as a console with a long lifespan intended to take multiple forms to keep the machine up to date. This philosophy can already be seen in the existing PS3, which includes the ability to install a new standard hard drive and plug in various standard USB peripherals, such as keyboards, mice, and flash card readers.

Sony has declined to comment on the Smarthouse report.

Capcom's SNES port of it classic brawler Final Fight (Super NES, 1 player) runs 800 Wii Points ($8). • Hang 'Em High comes to Halo 2; praise be

    [xbox] [xbox360]

Last November, Microsoft announced that Bungie was developing two new Halo 2 multiplayer maps that would be available in spring 2007 only for those playing the Xbox game via the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility feature. Today, Microsoft identified the maps and revised its prior claim, stating that the maps would be available on April 17 as paid content for Halo 2 players on either Xbox console.

First up is the sublime Hang 'Em High, which Microsoft claims is "the most requested Halo multiplayer map ever," and rightly so. Known as Tombstone in its Halo 2 incarnation, the map has received various tweaks to its design as well as a fresh coat of paint that replaces the original cool blue look with a grittier stone and aged metal texture set. A single screenshot is available here. Pro tip: There is no finer map for Team Crazy King.

Also en route is the tiny indoor arena Derelict, which is receiving a Halo 2 remake as Desolation. Originally an indoor map, the new Desolation appears to be set in a forest outpost, and has received a similar palette change to that of Hang 'Em High/Tombstone. Check out this screenshot. Pro tip: This is where you play Oddball.

Tombstone and Desolation will be available via Xbox Live on Xbox or Xbox 360 for $4 starting April 17.

  • Ninja Gaiden sneaks to Nintendo DS

    [ds]

It has long been known that current Ninja Gaiden franchise developer Team NINJA has a Nintendo DS game in the works, but the title has remained under wraps. This week, Tecmo officially announced Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, an action game in the long running ninja series. Unusually for the genre, Dragon Sword is played with the DS held sidways in a book-like configuration, and features full stylus control. Several Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword screenshots are available.

"We're very excited to be bringing Ninja Gaiden back to a Nintendo platform," said marketing manager Yoh Watanabe. "The Nintendo DS will allow gamers to control Master Ninja Ryu Hayabusa slash for slash with the use of the DS Stylus in a way never possible in previous iterations of the game. Dragon Sword will be the definitive ninja title for all DS owners to experience."

Tecmo plans to ship Team NINJA's Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword for Nintendo DS in North America this October.

  • Metal Gear Solid 4 primary voice cast announced

    [ps3]

Konami this week confirmed that longtime Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter will reprise his role as the now-aged mulleted action hero in Kojima Productions' highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for PlayStation 3. Other series veterans making a return for MGS4 include Paul Eiding (Roy Campbell), Christopher Randolph (Hal "Otacon" Emmerich), and Quinton Flynn (Raiden). The cast will be directed by returing voice director Kris Zimmerman to deliver a script written by Metal Gear creator and overlord Hideo Kojima and MGS4 director Shuyo Murata.

"I couldn't be more excited about this game. What I've seen of Metal Gear Solid 4 has absolutely blown me away. To bring the focus of the story back to Solid Snake, and to work with Kris Zimmerman and many of the amazing actors that provided iconic voices for the previous games, is like coming home," said Hayter, also known as the screenwriter of X-Men and X2. "I'm so proud and grateful to have been involved with Mr. Kojima as the voice of Snake, for nearly a decade, on this legendary video game series. This game is going to plunge players into the ultimate Metal Gear experience. And personally, I can't wait to play it."

Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is expected to ship for PlayStation 3 later this year.

  • Are you ready to rumble on PS3? Yes. (Updated)

    [ps3]

During a speech given at Sony's San Francisco launch event for SCE Santa Monica's God of War II (PS2), game director Cory Barlog let slip that rumble functionality will indeed be added to PlayStation 3 and its Sixaxis controller. Initially, the developer mentioned rumble in passing as a feature that would be implemented in a hypothetical God of War III for PS3. "Rumble coming back to PS3, eh?!" cried Barlog after the slip, inciting the crowd of journalists and developers to cheer.

The semi-announcement comes as little surprise in the wake of the announcement that Sony and force feedback developer Immersion have settled their legal feud, with Sony planning to license Immersion technology for unspecified platforms.

In regards to a still unannounced PS3 version of God of War, Barlog implied that such a game would be presented in 1080p resolution and would be the conclusion of the God of War trilogy. "If we were to do a God of War III on Wii--I mean PS3," said Barlog, "then it would finish this massive story. We've always imagined God of War as a trilogy, but the PSP game very much ties into it."

No further details regarding PS3 rumble functionality or God of War on PSP or PS3 were revealed.

  • God of War PSP Reconfirmed (Updated)

    [psp]

One of the worst kept secrets in recent video game industry times, IGN confirmed once again that Ready at Dawn will be bringing God of War to the PSP later this year thanks to an advertisement on the back of the God of War II (PS2) instruction manual. In actuality, snapshots of the ad first surfaced last week, and prior to that, Ready at Dawn's use of the God of War font on their site provided a strong backing for rumors of the time. Ready at Dawn's previous PSP game, Daxter, drew much acclaim for its technical achievements.

Updated: Speaking at a Sony-conducted God of War II launch event in San Francisco tonight, game director Cory Barlog confirmed that God of War is indeed heading to the PSP. Though Ready at Dawn will be handling development, Barlog will have a supervisory role on the game as the steward of the God of War franchise.

Capcom vs. AIAS, Round Two

Jan 29, 2007 10:24am CST tags: David Jaffe, Capcom, Tecmo, Industry News: PC & Console, AIAS
Last year, many gamers and industry members were surprised when the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences released its yearly list of gaming award nominations for 2005 and Capcom's highly praised Resident Evil 4 (PS2, GCN) was nowhere to be found. "Thank God for Capcom [not entering]. We're probably going to pick up some awards tonight," joked David Jaffe, designer of SCE Santa Monica's God of War, which indeed went on to win seven awards on twelve nominations. It turned out that Capcom had declined to join the AIAS--and pay its corporate membership dues--and meaning its games were not eligible for the ballot. AIAS voters wrote-in the game in high numbers but Capcom was informed the votes could not be counted without its membership.

Cash-strapped publisher Majesco was unable to join, leaving Double Fine's acclaimed Psychonauts (PS2, Xbox, PC) out of the running. For the larger Capcom, however, it appears to be a matter of principle as much as anything else. This year two well received Capcom games were missing from the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, its own Dead Rising (X360) and Clover Studio's Okami (PS2), the latter in particular a frequent recipient of awards from various publications.

This year, Capcom has posted a frank, full-length reply to the AIAS' methods via its forums, originally sent to GameSpot. Calling the awards "of dubious merit, at best," Capcom asked whether its company, "really [needs] to pay tens of thousands of dollars in order to present awards to our own games?"

"Again, from the AIAS webpage, their awards are supposedly about 'Recognizing the best games of 2006.' Evidently, they meant, the best games that paid to be recognized. As a company, we find ourselves questioning the value or credibility of awards that seem to honor developers for their creative work, when the truth is that their marketing departments have to pay to obtain consideration," reads the statement, which went on to add that were indeed many "fantastic" nominated games from member companies on the list of nominees.

In closing, the statement reads, "Capcom Entertainment would like to thank the gamers who have made Dead Rising and Okami so successful, the media who were similarly moved by the creativity and innovation found within the games and the teams at Capcom and Clover Studios who poured their outstanding passion, talent and creative energies into both ground-breaking games (coincidently, all things supposedly recognized by the Interactive Achievement Awards)."

In it story on the matter, GameSpot learned from AIAS representatives that in addition to Capcom and Majesco, publishers Eidos and Tecmo are not paying members; no games from the four publishers have been nominated for awards in the past three years. Apparently, the membership requirement is long standing AIAS policy but has only been enforced for the last few award shows. An AIAS representative noted that it contacted Capcom in advance soliciting membership, but the publisher declined.

The 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards will be presented on February 8, 2007, during the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas.

  • Square Enix gets on board with Unreal Engine 3

    [ps3] [xbox360]

Major Japanese publisher Square Enix stated today that it has become the latest official addition to the ever-growing list of Unreal Engine 3 licensees. Coming from a publisher such as Square Enix, the announcement was fairly unexpected. Traditionally, Japanese developers tend to use their own in-house engines, in many cases creating a dedicated engine for each game. Indeed, Square Enix has already revealed the existence of its internally developed White Engine, powerng the upcoming PS3 RPG sequel Final Fantasy XIII as well as various spinoffs uch as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, also for PS3; Square Enix has indicated that the White Engine will be extended to other platforms as well.

It is unclear exactly how extensively Square Enix will utilize Unreal Engine 3, though the wording of today's press release suggests that it will be integrated into its systems rather than replace them. "Square Enix is now building a technology platform to be used throughout the company utilizing proprietary technologies as well as introducing third-party solutions such as Unreal Engine 3," reads the statement; presumably, the proprietary technologies mentioned include the White Engine.

"The complexity of next-generation game systems featuring HD graphics and multi-core parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our game development," said Square Enix R&D general manager Taka Murata on the reasoning behind the agreement. "However, we can expedite our game development process significantly while allowing extra time and resources to be spent on game design and mechanics by establishing an effective technology platform. The technology platform for game development is becoming more important than ever. I'm excited to be partnering with Epic Games in such an important area."

"We're extremely excited to be working with Square Enix," responded Epic VP Jay Wilbur. "Square Enix is one of the biggest and most influential companies in the world-wide game business, and having them work with Unreal Engine 3 is a major honor for us and something we're very proud to be announcing."

Square Enix did not name any specific titles that will be utilizing Epic's middleware, but did note that both PC and console platforms will be included.

  • Microsoft Entertainment & Devices sees revenue boost, continued loss

    [xbox] [xbox360]

Microsoft released fiscal results for its second quarter, which ended December 31, 2006, with the company posting strong profits but its Entertainment and Devices division--which includes Xbox operations--again posting a loss. The division, which also includes media player Zune, saw a $1.27 billion increase in revenue to $2.96 billion from $1.69 billion in the same period of the prior year. Microsoft pegged the growth on Xbox 360 sales, which totalled about 4.4 million for the quarter, as well as on strong performance of PC game software and the launch of Zune. However, continued Xbox 360-related costs as well as Zune launch expenditures meant that the division still ended up in the red. Entertainment and Devices posted a quarterly loss of $289 million, up $3 million from $286 million during the same period of the prior year.

Following the announcement, Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell revealed in a conference call that Microsoft has lowered its total Xbox 360 sales projections for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2007. Previously set at a target 13-15 million units shipped, the company is now shooting for a total of 12 million units.

  • Nintendo posts strong profit boost

    [gamecube] [wii] [ds] [gba]

Fuelled by the enormous success of its Nintendo DS portable console as well as the recent launch of Wii, Nintendo today announced a net profit increase of 43% up to 132 billion yen ($1.1 billion) over the latter nine months of 2006. Revenues were up 73% to 713 billion yen ($5.9 billion); it is likely that contributing to the discrepancy are costs associated with the launch of Wii. Having recently raised its yearly profit outlook, the company retained its 120 billion yen ($996 million) fiscal year profit projection on 900 billion yen ($7.5 billion) in sales; the profit shortfall from the announced nine month period is due to potential fluctuations in the value of the yen.

Nintendo also announced that it has sold through 10 million Nintendo DS units to the Americas since its November 2004 launch. During the reported nine month period, the company sold 18.9 million units worldwide, bringing the lifetime total to 35.6 million. As far as Wii, the company stated that it has sold 3.19 million units worldwide during the reported period, falling short of its planned 4 million. A company representative noted that Nintendo has reached a manufactured total of 4 million, with the remaining units in transit. Nintendo stuck to its previously stated goal of shipping 6 million units by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007.

In a bizarre bit of mispromotion sure to result in some marketing employee getting a stern chat, Sony somehow ended up featuring a screenshot from Bizarre Creations' Xbox 360-exclusive racer Project Gotham Racing 3 front and center on the PSP sub-site of its Connect download service. The image was being used to promote a PSP video download showing off the PlayStation 3 downloadable racer Gran Turismo HD. • Fate of Bob Ross game in question (no more happy virtual trees?)

    [wii] [ds]

Earlier this year, Bob Ross Inc., the company that holds the rights to the name and images of the late fro-wearing televised painting instructor Bob Ross, announced that it had licensed developer AGFRAG Entertainment Group to create a Bob Ross video game for Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC. This week, it seems, development of the game halted. Yesterday, Play Nintendo reported on a message from the game's Yahoo Group stating, "AGFRAG is no longer involved int he [sic] development of ANY Bob Ross Game. Please contact Bob Ross Inc. for further information." That news has been confirmed by a message that has replaced AGFRAG's official site as of today. "I'm sorry that we have disappointed so many people on a certain project. Please realize we did what we felt was best, with the cards that were dealt to us and the situation we were in," reads the message from AGFRAG head Joseph Hatcher. The company is currently working on a different, unidentified, game.

According to Hatcher, plans for a Bob Ross game have not been shelved, but AGFRAG is no longer connected to the project. Bob Ross Inc. may be pursuing other development avenues for the game, though it has not made any official announcments on the matter.

  • Iwata forsees potential to beat earnings estimates

    [wii] [ds]

With its emphasis on its new control scheme and certain key pieces of nontraditional software, many analysts have predicted that Nintendo's Wii, currently in the midst of a continuing worldwide rollout having already launched in North America and Japan, would face its toughest competition not from Sony and Microsoft's home consoles but from its own Nintendo DS, which relies on a similar divergent strategy. This effect has been predicted to have a cannibalizing effect on DS as well. Speaking to Reuters today, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata cast aside such worries. "If you take a look at DS sales in the United States in the Thanksgiving week or DS sales in Japan in the week of the Wii launch, there has been little impact," said Iwata. The executive went on to say that Nintendo itself had factored these concerns into its own financial estimates, but after recent Wii and DS sales figures now sees the possibility of surpassing those expectations. "Confidence could be too strong a word, but there is an emerging possibility (to beat those forecasts)," he said.

Recently, Nintendo raised its sales expectations for DS from 17 million to 20 million within its current fiscal year. Iwata stated that while the machine's staggering success in Japan has likely reached its peak, the portable has continued room for growth in Europe and North America where it has only recently begun to hit its momentum.

During Wii's launch in Japan this past weekend, the console was reported to have sold out shipments of about 372,000, indicating that Nintendo came close but did not quite manage to supply its planned 400,000 units. Wii Sports, which is not bundled with the system in Japan as it is in North America and which has been the focus of Nintendo's Japanese marketing campaign for Wii, was the highest selling title at launch, selling over 176,000 units. It was followed by the game collection Wii Play, which comes bundled with a Wii Remote and will be released in North America on January 15, 2007. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, North America's top selling Wii game, came in third.

Today's report is similar to one Sandvine released in late 2004 following the release of Bungie's Halo 2 (Xbox), which saw Xbox Live traffic increase by 300%. Gears of War was recently revealed to have been the most-played Xbox Live game during the week of November 13, unseating the long standing champ Halo 2.

  • Ubi launches online-code based Rayman leaderboard

    [ps2] [wii]

Ubisoft sends along word that it has launched a set of web-based leaderboards for the Wii, PS2, and PC versions of Ubisoft Montpellier's humorous mini-game-laden fourth installment in the Rayman series, Rayman Raving Rabbids. Similarly to Beyond Good & Evil (PS2, Xbox, GCN, PC), also from designer Michel Ancel, Raving Rabbids makes use of uniquely generated Internet Codes to allow users to identify progress made in-game. These codes, given after playing a game in Score Attack mode, can be submitted to the game's official site with an Ubi.com account, and will result in the user's mini-game-specific and overall score average being posted to the leaderboards.

  • Microsoft to issue updated 360 update (UPDATED)

    [xbox360]

This week, Microsoft released a significant dashboard update for its Xbox 360 console via Xbox Live. After doing so, however, some users begain claiming that the update had apparently permanently crashed their consoles, rendering the systems useless. Today, Microsoft acknowledged the problem via its employee-written Gamerscore Blog. According to Microsoft marketing employee John Porcaro, the issue affects "less than 1%" of users. He noted that a new version of the update should be available within 24 hours of the time of his post, made at 1:39PM Pacific time.

Microsoft has not stated the conditions under which a console would fall victim to the bug, or whether specific conditions have been determined. Initially, users speculated that it only affected illegally modified Xbox 360s, while more recent claims suggest that it has affected Xbox 360s which had not been patched with the spring 2006 dashboard update.

Update: According to Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, the new update is now available via Xbox Live. Users with continued issues should contact Xbox support.

  • Nintendo confirms launch period shipment numbers

    [nintendo]

Nintendo announced today that it has committed to shipping some 4 million Wii systems from the machine's North American launch on November 19 until the end of calendar year 2006. The launch will follow in Japan on December 2, Australia and New Zealand on December 7, and Europe on December 8. Of the 4 million planned units, Nintendo claimed that the bulk will be shipped to the Americas, though specific breakdowns were not provided. The company claims that Wii's launch will be the largest console launch in over ten years.

Despite the high targets and the company's plans of "maximizing all its resources for a rapid replenishment program designed to consistently pump Wii consoles into the supply pipeline and keep retailers' shelves as filled as possible," Nintendo still expects demand to outstrip supply. This expectation was reinforced as retailer Wal-Mart opened up online preorders for the system this morning and within hours sold out its allotted stock, including its $533.56 four-game Customer's Choice Bundle.

Yesterday, Nintendo released the most recent launch lineup information for Wii and its Virtual Console service.

  • 40 downloadable PS3 games in the works

    [ps3]

According to statements made by Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios' Phil Harrison speaking to the Sony-sanctioned Three Speech blog, Sony is currently developing about 40 games to be distributed via PlayStation 3's downloadable game service. His comments seem to indicate that these games are being funded and published by Sony; it is possible that third party publishers have their own games in the works. Three Speech claims that some studios are currently dedicated entirely to creating downloadable PS3 games.

"My strategy was to encourage developers to push the machine technically, creatively, artistically--to innovate in lots of different ways," said Harrison. "But don't be restricted by ghettoising games into a particular genre, or a particular display mechanic, because what we've seen on other systems tend to be retro 2D games, and we're pushing the 3D capabilities of the PlayStation 3. Plus, the fact that every PS3 has a hard disc drive means that we're not restricted by the size of the download, and that has a huge impact on the kind of game design that you can do."

Despite its eventual plans for PS3 to download and play games first published on the original PlayStation, Sony has made it clear that its downloadable game service is strongly oriented towards newly developed titles rather than retro games.

  • Need for Speed Carbon content hits Live

    [xbox360]

Today, Electronic Arts made available a bevy of purchasable vehicles and upgrades for the Xbox 360 version of EA Black Box's Need for Speed Carbon. Available via Xbox Live Marketplace, today's eleven various additions are valued at a combined 3940 Microsoft Points ($49.25), with a bit of overlap as one of the packs contains content included in three others.

Apparently, these cars cannot be modified or used in Career mode. The Collector's Edition Upgrade goes for 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Its content is exclusive to the downloadable pack and cannot be obtained in the game through other means.

There are three performance bundles, the Performance Drivetrain Bundle, Performance Engine Boost Bundle, and Performance Handling Bundle, which contain different in-game upgrades that can be applied to your vehicles. Each runs 400 Microsoft Points ($5). The Ultimate Performance Bundle consists of all the content from the three performance bundles and runs 800 Microsoft Points ($10).
