Tabula Rasa Hands-On Preview

Aug 02, 2007 3:23pm CST tags: MMO, Tabula Rasa
Our MMO specialist Nick Breckon has been adventuring away in the beta of Richard Garriott and Destination Games' upcoming Tabula Rasa, and today he's got some detailed impressions of his experiences. While he has found himself impressed by many of the game's additions to the genre, including its engaging action-tinted combat system and novel approach to a less punishing character building system, he hasn't exactly been swept away by the game's world design, a crucial aspect of any MMO.
With so many paths to take, the game offers the ability to "clone" your character, spawning a copy of your avatar at each branching point and allowing you to continue down different paths in the future. Each character retains the same last name, which eases the tracking of your friends' alternate characters. Also, every character shares a storage space, letting you effortlessly exchange goods between characters. By taking away the punishment related to trying new characters, Destination has implemented a simple, yet utterly essential feature, and one that should become a standard in future games.

With Ultima creator Richard Garriott working outside the bounds of his iconic franchise, the designer has gone in quite a different direction with Tabula Rasa, his next project, blending an unusual number of action elements into the sci-fi MMO. After attending a demonstration of the game conducted by Garriott himself, Nick has written some impressions of Tabula Rasa.
"It's still an RPG," Garriott reminded us again, but there was the spaceman crouching behind sandbags and taking cover, snapping off quick ranged shots with his laser rifle, and all from a third-person perspective. "If he were to stay there too long, the Bane would move in there and attack him," he continued, emphasizing the role that tactics could play. Crouching behind an embankment will reduce the chance a player will be hit by half, but will not hinder his chance to attack, encouraging players to consider their environment when in battle.
