TRIBES v1.7 Released

Jul 31, 1999 12:35am CST tags: TRIBES
TRIBES v1.7 has indeed been released. You can grab it from the TRIBES Players page. There are patches for 1.0 to 1.7 as well as 1.6 to 1.7. Here is a list of the major changes that were put into the latest patch:

- You can no longer throw grenades & mines if you are not controlling either your player object or a vehicle.
- Fixed a bug where mines and grenades that exploded while the player was not in control of his body would have an invalid team number.
- Players can no longer activate any station if their primary weapon is in it's fire or reload state.
- Player weapon is unmounted for all active stations (was left mounted for permanent ammo stations in 1.6)
- Fixed a bug with palette management introduced in 1.6
- Typing unclosed single quotes in the console no longer crashes.
- Turret::verifyTarget now has two arguments (%this,%target)
- GameBase::getMuzzleTransform() should now work correctly with turrets.
- There is now a 2 sec. timeout after using a station in which you can not throw mines & grenades.
- A few fixes were added to the 1.6 fix list (the first three had been left out)
- Player now throws his weapon more often when killed with trigger down.
- Fliers can no longer hover up through cielings or the bottom of bases.
- Deployables objects now check against interior and terrain when being displaced by a moveable objects (doors & elevators)
- Displacement code (elavators & doors) now uses a stepping collision test when testing a displaced object for collision.
- A server side getLOSInfo method was added for bot authors.

TRIBES v1.7 Soon

Jul 29, 1999 3:39am CST tags: TRIBES
Tim Gift of Dynamix made a .plan update stating that v1.7 of TRIBES is just about ready to go out the door. The patch has moved its way over to the QA guys who are testing the patch for any bugs that may have slipped through before we can get our grubby paws on it.

Put a few fixes into the current patch (should end up version 1.7); the elevator bugs (displacing deployables through floors, and player warping). No more flying through ceilings with vehicles, a few other misc. things. JohnA fixed a number of bug's in the scripts, and the palette problem should addressed (DaveM). The release notes will have the full list.

TRIBES 1.6 3dfx Bug

Jul 23, 1999 6:56pm CST tags: TRIBES
loony posted an explanation of the bug in the recently released Starsiege: TRIBES 1.6 patch that's plaguing 3dfx card owners:

Arg! We let an obvious one slip through in the 1.6 patch of Tribes. The specific problem is with user created art (reticles, skins, etc.) and Voodoo configurations with more than one TMU. User created art will show up as either all black or black and white or as other funky looking combos... basically totally wrong. We have the problem fixed, we will get the patch up ASAP. My apologies for this obvious error.

People seem to be liking the OpenGL support though! :)

Make sure and post some comments on the performance, I'm curious how it acts but dont have access to my home computer till Friday. :)

TRIBES Extreme For Free?

Jul 12, 1999 6:05pm CST tags: TRIBES
Well, almost. Some interesting developments on the TRIBES Extreme front. Originally the plan was for the guys at Xtreme Tribes to work with Dynamix on TRIBES Extreme for the commercial release of the expansion for TRIBES as a retail product, however plans have changed. Here is word from Mike Hamlett:

Mike Hamlett here from Xtreme Tribes, we were working with Dynamix on the new game Tribes Extreme. Well we have pulled away and decided to offer all of our work to the public for free. See the official announcement on my site. If you would like and interview or some exclusive pics let me know.

TRIBES OpenGL

Jul 09, 1999 7:08pm CST tags: TRIBES
Nels Bruckner of Dynamix updated his .plan with some more word on the v1.6 update of TRIBES which should be including a lot of changes to the OpenGL part of the code. Surprisingly the Savage4 card of all things is a big performer.

The end result will hopefully be that no one with a TNT-based accelerator will have to run Tribes in software mode (yeah!). In fact, initial reports from our QA department indicate that the TNT performance is now very comparable to the Glide performance in earlier versions. Performance on other manufacturer's cards is a mixed lot, depending quite heavily on the state of thier drivers

More TRIBES Extreme

Jun 30, 1999 7:39am CST tags: TRIBES
GameCenter has a bit of coverage on the TRIBES Extreme announcement that was made by Dynamix a couple of days ago. It's TRIBES.. but with enhancements to the gameplay and a single player portion of the game. Ok? Make sure and check out the new screenshots too: shot1 shot2 shot3 and shot4

Tribes Extreme offers a cohesive single-player experience. Some of the single-player-focused features are new training missions, which help Tribes newcomers learn the skills they need for online play; AI warriors and Synthralls, which may be used to fulfill military roles in times of emergency; and an entirely new multichapter campaign. The multichapter campaign is a three-part battle encompassing many missions that pits the player against the Grievers, a force of piratical scavengers that has wiped out the player's local tribe family. Each mission has a specific goal that fits into the overall campaign objective.

Also, the man loony fired up a couple of questions asking for some more clarification on just what TRIBES Extreme is:

Q: I'm a bit confused by the announcement about TRIBES Extreme. Can you quickly explain how it differs from TRIBES 2?

A: Tribes Extreme differs from Tribes 2 in several ways - Tribes Extreme is based on the Tribes 1 engine; Tribes 1 clients can connect to Tribes Extreme servers and vice versa. Tribes 2 has an entirely new engine, rearchitected for a hardware-only world, with more vehicles, terrain hazards, weather and water. Tribes Extreme is like Tribes 1 with a single-player mission pack, a multi-player mission pack and enhanced bots. Tribes 2 will be a true sequel.
