New Smash Bros. Media Depicts Hammer Smackage

Oct 30, 2007 3:57pm CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Trailer, Screenshots
Misunderstood Kirby pseudo-baddie King Dedede represents the latest character to join the cast of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the first, and likely only, Wii entry in Nintendo's mascot fighting franchise.

Following Dedede's unveiling on the game's official site, series designer Masahiro Sakurai posted pictures of the hammer-wielder's various attacks.

Sakurai, who recently disclosed that Brawl will feature both a level editor and video replay mode in addition to online play, also provided the first look at the game's traditional classic mode while hinting at additional modes and features.

"You earn and save [coins] little by little as you play [classic mode]," he wrote. "And supposedly you can use them somewhere. But no--you don’t use them to shop."

Smash Bros. Brawl to Feature Level Editor, Daily Level Download

Oct 29, 2007 3:46am CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Further increasing Super Smash Bros. Brawl's comparisons to Halo 3 and providing more consolation for the game's recent delay into early 2008, series designer Masahiro Sakurai has revealed on the game's official site that it will ship with a level creation feature. Players will be able to construct levels based on any of the game's 2D backgrounds, placing 3D objects on top to create new stages and choosing the music that will accompany each stage.

Screenshots of the level editor show a wide variety of components, which can be flipped, shrunk, enlarged, and recolored. You will be able to send your new creations to friends (although the announcement somewhat annoyingly notes that recipients must be added both as Wii friends and Smash friends). Even better, you can upload your stages directly to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers, and every day Nintendo will choose a stage to send out to all online-enabled Smash owners.

"Mmm... That's amazing," writes Sakurai on the official site. We agree.

Brawl also supports video recording and screenshot snapping, with the products of both features able to be send through the internet's many tubes. The Wii brawler is expected to hit North America on February 10, 2008.

Smash Bros. Brawl Includes Video Replay Sharing

Oct 24, 2007 11:00am CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Alongside online multiplayer and Sonic the Hedgehog, Nintendo's mascot fighter Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) will feature the ability to record and save up to three minutes of video. As explained on the official Smash Bros. blog, these replays can be sent to other Wii owners through the game's online functionality.

A similar mode was recently included in the cultural sensation known as Bungie's Halo 3 (X360). It has since spawned countless video clips of some entertaining and some not-so-amusing moments, the highlights of which are regularly showcased in our Replay Couch column.

With Brawl implementing such a popular and community-oriented feature, expect the internet to be flooded with astounding Smash Bros. feats in the weeks following the game's February 10 release in North America.

Smash Bros. Brawl Media Backslaps K. Diddy

Fresh from the official source of all things Smash Bros, Shacknews is proud to present the latest batch of media from Nintendo's upcoming Wii mascot fighter.

Included in the update is the first public glimpse of the PictoChat stage, which is accompanied by music from Brain Age, the Mii Channel, and the Wii Shop Channel.

As far as characters go, there are shots of Peach's sultry and seductive Final Smash, as well as Mario going through the motions and working out his daily frustrations on Diddy Kong.

Paying homage to earlier Nintendo titles in the form of random assist trophies are the diminutive Little Mac and the lovable Meowth. We also have some new pictures of the punching bag mini-game, which can be played online, and a Wii Remote control diagram.

New Super Smash Bros. Brawl Media and Details Soothe Delay Pains

Oct 15, 2007 12:39pm CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Trailer, Screenshots, Delay
Though the recent revelations of Sonic the Hedgehog and co-op campaign play have been celebrated among the Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) community, news that the latest entry in the notoriously replayable mascot fighting franchise was delayed until Feburary still hurt. To help salve the pain, we present you with the latest batch of media and details, straight from the official site.

First up are two new stages, Shadow Moses from Metal Gear Solid (GCN, PSX) and New Pork City from Mother 3 (GBA). Sadly, the fate of the Japan-only Mother 3, better known elsewhere as Earthbound 3, is still unknown. Perhaps this stage and the addition of protagonist Lucas to the playable roster will garner some attention?

Moving on, we have pictorials depicting Kirby's stew-y Final Smash and Fox McCloud's Final Smash, which features a huge Landmaster tank. There are also some shots of various Zero Suit Samus attacks.

The game will also feature a handy screenshot mode, which allows users to take shots at almost any time, save then to either the Wii's internal memory or an SD memory card, and share them with friends via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. It's the perfect tool to capture pictures of a certain character's highly-detailed curves and the awesome 2D pixel art of the random Excitebike and Lakitu assists!

Sonic to Join Smash Bros. Brawl; Game Delayed

Oct 10, 2007 5:11am CST tags: Sega, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Delay
Confirming longstanding rumors, Nintendo has revealed that Sega mascot Sonic the Hedgehog will rumble with Mario and co. in the company's upcoming online battle royale Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii). Sonic will become the second confirmed character in the game not native to Nintendo systems, following the inclusion of Metal Gear's Solid Snake, added upon the insistence of creator Hideo Kojima.

The news has been confirmed on the official Smash Bros. site, which contains screenshots as well as a trailer showcasing plenty of Sonic spin-dash action. "The one whose Smash appearance has been most desired dashes in from far away at supersonic speed," the site bafflingly reads.

Along with the revelation came news that the game has been delayed in Japan until January 28, 2008. While there is no explicit word on a change in North America from the game's previously announced December 3 shipment target, the official North American site ominously lists a release date of "TBD."

Smash Bros. Brawl Supports Co-op Campaign Play

Oct 05, 2007 4:13pm CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Much to the delight of co-op gaming duos worldwide, Nintendo's official Smash Bros. site has revealed that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) will allow two local players to cooperatively tackle its substantial campaign mode.

With the mascot-oriented fighting franchise known for its multiplayer goodness, the presence of additional multiplayer modes, such as online play, are no surprise. However, this marks the first time that a Super Smash Bros. title has allowed more than one player to duke things out across its side-scrolling adventure mode.

Known as The Subspace Emissary, the story-driven mode in Brawl is said to be much improved and far more complex over past single-player offerings in the series.

"People have been kind enough to praise [Smash Bros.] multiplayer, but we've never been able to create a fully fleshed out single-player game," explained game designer Masahiro Sakurai. "This time, though, we've managed to ... Read more

Hayter to Voice Snake in Super Smash Bros. Brawl; New Media: Lucas (Not Ness), Tournaments

Oct 01, 2007 1:26pm CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Trailer, Screenshots
Longtime English-version Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter, whom Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima has described as his preferred Snake voice actor in the Metal Gear Solid games, will be lending his gruff utterances to Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii), Hayter has revealed on his official site.

Meanwhile, the regular Smash updates fire away. Making his series debut is quiet and unassuming Mother 3 (GBA) protagonist Lucas. It is not known if Lucas replaces the yo-yo slinging Ness as he did in the third Mother game, or if HAL Laboratory and Brownie Brown's conclusion to the series known in North America as Earthbound will ever make it to our shores.

Also shown for the first time are two Final Smashes--Diddy Kong's nutty air assault and Pokemon Trainer's trifecta of pain.

Other revelations include the appearance of Animal Crossing's resident preacher Mr. Resetti as an assist trophy, details on the game's Tourney Mode (supporting up to 32 players), and a showcase of the title's numerous trophies, including a mode in which they can be placed and arranged like action figures.

Brawl jabs and jumps its way into stores December 3. For more information and screenshots, browse our ridiculously expansive main gallery.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Confirmed to Include Four-Player Online Mode

Sep 18, 2007 4:58am CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Allaying fan fears that have intensified with months of silence regarding the presence of online multiplayer in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii), Nintendo has announced that the game will include an online mode with support for up to four players.

Smashers can search for games among friends or anonymous public players; oddly, the game will track stats for games played with friends, but not for those played with random players. Like other first-party online Nintendo games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will make use of numeric friend codes to populate its in-game friends list. It is not clear if these codes will be drawn from the system friends list or a game-specific list, but precedent suggests the latter is likely.

In between matches, a punching bag mini-game is available. During battles, players can send four customizable text messages by way of the four directions on the d-pad.

Nintendo promises multiple gameplay modes and "a number of services" that make use of online and have yet to be revealed. The game releases in North America on December 3.

Smash Bros Brawl Media F.L.U.D.D.

Sep 10, 2007 2:30pm CST tags: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Trailer, Screenshots
Another day has arrived, bringing with it another round of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) media and details via the game's official site.

Recent updates showcase Kirby adversary Meta Knight, Diddy Kong's nutty special attacks, and Mario sporting Sunshine pal F.L.U.D.D.

Newly unveiled stages include the WarioWare arena and the revamped Pokemon Stadium, both of which feature a variety of constantly changing conditions. Speaking of Pokemon, the ever-hungry Munlax appears as one of many creatures that may emerge from the cramped confines of the torturous Pokeballs, gobbling up any item it sees.

Smash Bros. Brawl will allow players to customize a stage's music via sliders and unlock more tracks by collecting CDs in-game. The game is set to release in North America on December 3, 2007. For an unbelievable F.L.U.D.D. of screens, scope out the main gallery.

The onslaught of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) information continues with the latest batch of screens and details from the game's official site.

Following in the footsteps of his idol Donkey Kong is the rambunctious Diddy Kong, marking the chimp's first playable appearance in a Smash Bros. title. Meanwhile, Yoshi's Final Smash has the cuddly dinosaur-dragon-thing sprouting wings and breathing fire, while winged characters such as as Pit, Charizard and Meta Knight now have gliding capabilities.

The new assets also provide a closer look at the enemies and tactics of the single player Subspace Emissary adventure, including its Ancient Minister leader and Primid minions. Also revealed is the campaign's first boss, Petey Piranha, who has captured both Zelda and Peach in a cage. Players can only rescue one mistress during the encounter depending on which cage they destroy first--a troubling moral quandry for diehard Nintendo fans.

Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) will feature an expanded story-driven single-player adventure mode titled The Subspace Emissary in addition to its traditional multiplayer offerings, director and game designer Masahiro Sakurai revealed today.

"People have been kind enough to praise [Smash Bros.] multiplayer, but we've never been able to create a fully fleshed out single-player game," wrote Sakurai on the game's official site. "This time, though, we've managed to create a complete side-scrolling action game. It's storyline isn't overwrought--it's hastened along by a bunch of quick movies."

While HAL Laboratory's Super Smash Bros. (N64) contained single-player gameplay--essentially multiplayer with bots--the main appeal of the title remained its multiplayer mode. The company's GameCube ... Read more
