Stormfront Explains Closure, Remains Optimistic

Apr 03, 2008 5:14pm CST tags: Stormfront Studios
Stormfront Studios founder and CEO Don Daglow has explained the circumstances behind the developer's sudden closure and suggested there may yet be hope for the company.

Daglow said that financial hardship prompted the suspension of operations at Stormfront, which most recently developed a video game adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles. While several publishers expressed interest in two original properties in development at the studio, no deals had been signed. One of the projects was later cancelled due to an undisclosed publisher acquisition.

The studio sought a bridge loan to support operating costs while negotiations with publishers went forward, but the financing never came through. Without an inked publishing deal and mounting costs, Stormfront sent its employees... Read more

Report: Eragon Dev Stormfront Studios Closing

Apr 01, 2008 4:02pm CST tags: Stormfront Studios
Multiple sources close to Stormfront Studios say that the developer is closing after almost twenty years in operation, according to Gamasutra.

Stormfront most recently produced a multiplatform video game adaptation of the 2008 fantasy film The Spiderwick Chronicles. The company is also known for its development of adaptations of Eragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, as well as a litany of other titles throughout its two decades of operation.

Gamasutra did not reveal any details surrounding the closure, and noted that no confirmation has yet been issued by Stormfront. If the studio is indeed in the process of closing, an official announcement will likely be made in the near future.

  • Microsoft to issue updated 360 update (UPDATED)

    [xbox360]

This week, Microsoft released a significant dashboard update for its Xbox 360 console via Xbox Live. After doing so, however, some users begain claiming that the update had apparently permanently crashed their consoles, rendering the systems useless. Today, Microsoft acknowledged the problem via its employee-written Gamerscore Blog. According to Microsoft marketing employee John Porcaro, the issue affects "less than 1%" of users. He noted that a new version of the update should be available within 24 hours of the time of his post, made at 1:39PM Pacific time.

Microsoft has not stated the conditions under which a console would fall victim to the bug, or whether specific conditions have been determined. Initially, users speculated that it only affected illegally modified Xbox 360s, while more recent claims suggest that it has affected Xbox 360s which had not been patched with the spring 2006 dashboard update.

Update: According to Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, the new update is now available via Xbox Live. Users with continued issues should contact Xbox support.

  • Nintendo confirms launch period shipment numbers

    [nintendo]

Nintendo announced today that it has committed to shipping some 4 million Wii systems from the machine's North American launch on November 19 until the end of calendar year 2006. The launch will follow in Japan on December 2, Australia and New Zealand on December 7, and Europe on December 8. Of the 4 million planned units, Nintendo claimed that the bulk will be shipped to the Americas, though specific breakdowns were not provided. The company claims that Wii's launch will be the largest console launch in over ten years.

Despite the high targets and the company's plans of "maximizing all its resources for a rapid replenishment program designed to consistently pump Wii consoles into the supply pipeline and keep retailers' shelves as filled as possible," Nintendo still expects demand to outstrip supply. This expectation was reinforced as retailer Wal-Mart opened up online preorders for the system this morning and within hours sold out its allotted stock, including its $533.56 four-game Customer's Choice Bundle.

Yesterday, Nintendo released the most recent launch lineup information for Wii and its Virtual Console service.

  • 40 downloadable PS3 games in the works

    [ps3]

According to statements made by Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios' Phil Harrison speaking to the Sony-sanctioned Three Speech blog, Sony is currently developing about 40 games to be distributed via PlayStation 3's downloadable game service. His comments seem to indicate that these games are being funded and published by Sony; it is possible that third party publishers have their own games in the works. Three Speech claims that some studios are currently dedicated entirely to creating downloadable PS3 games.

"My strategy was to encourage developers to push the machine technically, creatively, artistically--to innovate in lots of different ways," said Harrison. "But don't be restricted by ghettoising games into a particular genre, or a particular display mechanic, because what we've seen on other systems tend to be retro 2D games, and we're pushing the 3D capabilities of the PlayStation 3. Plus, the fact that every PS3 has a hard disc drive means that we're not restricted by the size of the download, and that has a huge impact on the kind of game design that you can do."

Despite its eventual plans for PS3 to download and play games first published on the original PlayStation, Sony has made it clear that its downloadable game service is strongly oriented towards newly developed titles rather than retro games.

  • Need for Speed Carbon content hits Live

    [xbox360]

Today, Electronic Arts made available a bevy of purchasable vehicles and upgrades for the Xbox 360 version of EA Black Box's Need for Speed Carbon. Available via Xbox Live Marketplace, today's eleven various additions are valued at a combined 3940 Microsoft Points ($49.25), with a bit of overlap as one of the packs contains content included in three others.

The biggest bundle of content on sale for Carbon is the Collector's Edition Upgrade, consisting of 12 tracks, 6 Challenge missions, and 10 cars, such as the '92 Nissan 240 SX, '07 Jaguar XK, '06 Camaro concept, and '06 Koenigsegg CCX. Apparently, these cars cannot be modified or used in Career mode. The Collector's Edition Upgrade goes for 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Its content is exclusive to the downloadable pack and cannot be obtained in the game through other means.

There are three performance bundles, the Performance Drivetrain Bundle, Performance Engine Boost Bundle, and Performance Handling Bundle, which contain different in-game upgrades that can be applied to your vehicles. Each runs 400 Microsoft Points ($5). The Ultimate Performance Bundle consists of all the content from the three performance bundles and runs 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Some of the content in the performance bundles can be acquired in-game through other means.

Next up are three body modification kits, the Muscle Car Autosculpt Body Kit, Autosculpt Tuner Body Kit, and Autosculpt Exotic Body Kit, each of which includes new Autosculpt features for its respective vehicle class. Each runs 300 Microsoft Points ($3.75). Some of the content in the autosculpt bundles can be acquired in-game through other means.

Finally, there are three standalone cars available for 80 Microsoft Points ($1) each: the '99 Nissan Skyline GR-R R34, '04 Lamborghini Murcielago, and '06 Dodge Viper SRT-10. These cars can also be unlocked in the game's Career mode.

  • Eragon demo goes Live

    [xbox360]

Sierra Entertainment sends word that a demo of the Xbox 360 version of Stormfront Studios' Eragon is being added to Xbox Live. At time of writing, it is not yet available. When it is, it will include a sample of the single-player game's dragon-riding gameplay. The full version of Eragon includes a cooperative mode.

Stormfront Studios' Eragon ships November 14, 2006.

I've given the matter some thought, and I really think that I may have been too hard on Manhunt™ in my review of the game. I know I marked it as "good", but let's face it, Manhunt™ isn't a good game, it's a great game. And you know, so was Grand Theft Auto™: Vice City™. And Grand Theft Auto™ 3™ was great too, wasn't it? Yes, I've given the matter some thought, and really, at the end of the day, can you really name a game that's been better in the last few years than State of Emergency™? I know I can't. Except for Manhunt™, Grand Theft Auto™ 3™, Grand Theft Auto™: Vice City™ and yes, even Max Payne 2™, which was just amazing as well. I don't know why I didn't realize this sooner.

Xbox Halo Bundle
IGN is reporting that North America will finally get a special Xbox system, following exclusive versions of the console in Europe and Japan. Over at EBGames you can pre-order the new Xbox Halo bundle, which comes with a translucent green Xbox, a translucent green controller, a copy of Halo and a Halo 2 preview DVD. The price is $169.99. According to IGN you'll pretty much have to preorder as quantities will be limited.
GameBoy Advance Nintendo News
The latest edition of CNN/Money's Game Over column has been posted, covering a variety of Nintendo topics. Chris Morris talked to Executive vice president of sales and marketing Reggie Fils-Aime about the Nintendo DS (release date and price will be announced during the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May), its next-gen home console and GameCube & GameBoy Advance game lineup. In other Nintendo news the company revised its profits forecast downwards, due to the weak dollar.

The overwhelming success of Dragon Quest V over in Japan has had one surprising side effect...Bloomberg Japan is reporting that Square Enix has canceled Dragon Quest VIII, and will instead go back and remake Dragon Quest I through VII for the PlayStation 2. Late Night Consoling

Mar 19, 2004 10:00pm CST tags: Namco, Bungie, Atari, Capcom, Rockstar, Square Enix, Games: Console, Sony, Stormfront Studios
There wasn't an LNC last night, so if you missed it, here's the story we ran about Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict. Although I'm a bit disappointed that the Onslaught mode won't be carried over from UT2004, it sounds like this is a really big step up from the original, both in terms of its single player and multiplayer content. One thing I'm not so sure I like are the plans for melee combat. While I'm certainly willing to give it a shot, it's always been my experience that melee combat, while sort of neat in a novelty kind of way, just isn't much fun when everyone else has ranged weapons. We've had a few Jedi Knights try and succeed with varying levels of success, but at the end of the day, I think everyone just prefers to have a giant gun to even the most badass of swords. But hey, if Epic can pull it off, it'll be really cool, and I'm definitely looking forward to checking this out at E3 in May.

Xbox Xbox Price Drop Imminent?
Reuters ran a story today reporting on an item in today's Wall Street Journal that Microsoft is going to drop the price of the Xbox to $149 next month. This is actually perfectly in line with what we've been hearing for months, so there's no real shockers here. What is news (somewhat) is that Microsoft will also market a $169 package that includes a limited-edition Xbox and Halo (this was rumored last week, but the price is new).
GameCube GameCube Price Drops Price (Sort of), Digial AV Port
Apparently a new government regulation in Japan says that all retail prices have to include sales tax, so Nintendo has basically renumbered the cost of the GameCube over there, so that the retail price will stay the same even though it will now include the sales tax (so it's basically a price drop of about $6 over there). What's much more significant, is the news that they will soon begin shipping a new GameCube model, which loses the removable circular nameplate from the device as well as its digital AV port. In Japan this was accompanied by news that a new cable will be released to allow digital output from the regular port, but Planet GameCube has spoken with Nintendo of America and learned that there are no such plans for this country when that model becomes the de facto standard worldwide. Instead, they will allow buyers of the new model to trade it in for an older one.
Square Enix FFXI Getting Big Push from Sony, Square Buys Mobile Developer
Howabout that new Squeenix icon, huh? Sony has announced plans for a huge marketing and promotional blitz across television, print and online media to support Final Fantasy XI. While the launch of any new Final Fantasy is a big deal, this one needs more promotion than usual, as gamers will have to buy the game and hard drive bundle for $99, as well as the network adapter. In semi-related news, Square Enix has purchased UIEvolution, a wireless games developer located here in the US.
PS2 Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone Announced
It's already been featured in some magazine previews, but nonetheless, Atari has finally gotten around to formally announcing Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone. Demon Stone is another in the increasingly-crowded genre of console-based action RPGs, and is from Stormfront Studios, the developers of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. For more check out GameSpot's first look at the game.
PS2 Nina Gets a Real Name
Namco has announced a real name for the game previously only known as Nina. The game will be known as Death by Degrees Tekken: Nina Williams. Yikes. PS2.IGN has posted some new details from this game, which has a very odd control scheme, and The Magic Box has some new shots.
PS2 GT4 Prologue Confirmed for Europe
As far as I know, no such thing has been confirmed for this country yet, but Computer and Video Games is reporting that they have confirmed with Sony Europe that Gran Turismo 4 Prologue will be releeased over there, possibly with special features not seen in the Japanese release. GT4 Prologue was the sort of consolation prize Japan received late last year after the most recent delay of the full game, and contained a little more gameplay than your average demo, but much less than a full game.
Xbox Galleon Delayed One Last Time
Also at CVG tonight is word that Galleon, the eternally-in-development title from Confounding Factor has been delayed one last time. While the game was originally supposed to come out in the spring (well "originally" is a relative term -- this was going to be a Dreamcast game at one point) it has now been confirmed for a June release in Europe. Until the next delay, that is (I kid, I kid).
GameBoy Advance Kirby Put on Hold
Nintendo of Japan has announced a last-minute hold on Hoshi no Kirby: Kagami no Daimeikyuu, the latest Kirby game for GBA that was supposed to ship next week. Apparently a showstopping bug was discovered at the 11th hour, and it was significant enough that the game no longer has any release date scheduled.
n-gage On the Difficulties of Activating an N-Gage
Most of the N-Gage's various defficiencies have been pretty well-documented at this point both here and elsewhere, but I thought this story deserved a mention nonetheless...game developer Greg Costik has posted a lengthy diatribe on his blog detailing the rediculously difficult process he ran into trying to activate an N-Gage he purchased from GameStop. It's quite funny.
PS2 The North American HDD Examined
PS2.IGN has gotten their hands on a final copy of Final Fantasy XI and the PS2 HDD drive that comes with it, and have posted an article looking at the device. They weren't allowed to post certain things (like talk about the new features of PlayOnline), but the article does talk about what comes with the thing, what you can do with the included utility disc, what other games will support the HDD and more.
Xbox Weekly Halo Update
It's a Friday, so therefore a new Weekly Update has been released by Bungie. This week's edition is up at Bungie.net, and contains tidbits about the Environment! Animation! Testing! Sound! and Other Stuff! from Halo 2.
PS2 Ace Combat 5 Unveiled Next Week
Good lord, they're finally going to do it...next week's issue of the Japanes magazine Famitsu will apparently at long last take the wraps off Ace Combat 5, a game that Namco has been rediculously secretive of until this point. Exactly how much will be revealed is unknown...I doubt it'll happen, but if it's a hands-on preview, I'm sure there are several Shacker heads that will explode.

Late Night Consoling

Feb 20, 2004 10:00pm CST tags: Simpsons, Denis Dyack, Capcom, Sega, Silicon Knights, Games: Console, Sony, Stormfront Studios
(A quick note: my internet connection's on the fritz, so if this goes up late, I apologize). My copy of this month's issue of GameInformer arrived here at the loonyBin yesterday, and I eagerly read through the exclusive preview of Resident Evil 4. I must say, I'm pretty impressed. I gave up on the survival horror genre long ago (not even Eternal Darkness held my interest long enough for me to finish it), but it sounds like there are just enough changes here to make it feel original and different. Look for details on this to (officially) hit the web in the near future. Anyway, what I also was looking forward to reading was GameInformer's preview of Killer 7, and I came away from it just as confused as I was before. I think this game is going to be either absolutely brilliant or a jumbled mess of sheer nonsense. I dig the phildickian idea that all seven lead characters are just personalities in one guy's head, but so much of this game sounds too weird to actually work. Here's a quick excerpt as an example, "...you don't actually move in 3D in the environments. Instead you choose a direction from a variety of choices, like South Hallway or Room #302 and then you have the ability to move either further down that linear path, or turn back to the choices you previously made." Say what? Throw in a style that looks strangely like Flashback or Out of This World and I just don't know what to make of this game.

PS2 Sony! Sony! Sony!
Sony held their Gamer's Day event yesterday, and as you would expect, there was some news. Most shocking was word that Dark Odyssey wasn't in fact the latest Dark Cloud title from Factor 5, but rather an early production name for God of War, a new medieval action title from the creator of Twisted Metal. Also announced was a new fall release date for Gran Turismo 4, word that Hot Shots Golf Fore! will keep its online gameplay when it's released in North America this summer and some new details from Killzone. For reports, head over to GameSpot, IGN and GameInformer.
Xbox Danny Elfman Composing Fable Theme
Well I just got a whole lot more interested in this game...Microsoft announced today that none other than Danny Elfman, the former front man for Oingo Boingo and composer of everything from the Spider-Man and Batman scores to the opening music from The Simpsons, will be composing the theme song for Fable. As you might expect, this has caused the game to be delayed for another 18 months. I kid, I kid. It's still scheduled for release later this year.

More GoldenEye Wackiness
gamesindustry.biz has posted an update on their GoldenEye scoop, with word that Scottish developer Visual Science (whose previous work includes Formula 1: Career Challenge) will be developing the title. More intriguing however is this item at 1UP, which says that the current issue of EGM promises an exclusive first look at the game, which they say will let you, "play the villain and take on 007 in this FPS that shakes up the Bond-universe timeline and continuity like a perfect martini...made in the Twilight Zone." What's particularly interesting is that this story won't be on the cover as was planned, but instead will be something that "might just be even bigger."
PS2 Virtua Fighter 4 Final Tuned Announced
At the big AOU 2004 convention in Japan, Sega announced Virtua Fighter 4 Final Tuned, another arcade revision of VF4. This new version contains a Challenge Mode that is said to be similar to the Weapons Master mode from Soul Calibur II. For preliminary details and shots, consult The Magic Box and 1UP.
Neo Geo SNK Moves Beyond MVS
After a record-setting 15 years of active development, SNK is finally graduating from their venerable NeoGeo MVS platform. At the AOU 2004 show, SNK Playmore has announced three new games, which will all use Sammy's Atomiswave arcade system instead. The games are all continuations of long-running MVS titles: The King of Fighters 2004, Samurai Spirits AW and Metal Slug 6. If you're worried about another NeoGeo 64, you can take some solace in the fact that these will almost certainly retain the same gameplay as their predecessors.
PS3 Team Bondi Interview
Eurogamer.net has conducted an interview with Brendan McNamara, who recently founded Team Bondi, a new developer comprised largely of former Team Soho alumni. Brendan can't say much about their project, just that it's in development for the PS3 and will likely take just as long to complete as The Getaway did (so don't look for it any time soon).
PlayStation Sidhe Interactive Gets Grant for PSP Development
New Zealand developer Sidhe Interactive has announced that they have received a government research grant from Technology New Zealand to fund development of a new title for Sony's PSP handheld. Government grants of this sort are quite common for film production (as they heavily promote the places they're filmed in) but I can't recall of any other such grant money being awarded for game development. Anyone know of anything like this?
PS2 New Xenosaga Episode II Battle System Details
1UP has posted new details on the battle system from Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose. Taking a concept featured in a few other recent RPGs, multiple characters will be able to team up for special combination attacks. Four images are in 1UP's report, each showing a different combo move.
PS2 Xbox Is Whiplash Cruel to Animals?
I don't even know where to start with this one...the Crystal Dynamics-developed, Eidos-published title Whiplash is being criticized by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and others in the UK, where the game goes on sale next week, as promoting cruelty towards animals. Whiplash of course is the game in which you play as a rabbit chained to a weasel, who you can fling around, as you free trapped animals. I'd like to point out that I have it on good authority that no actual animals were harmed in the production of the game (except for that one rabbit that participated in the QA process...but he was pretty disturbed to begin with).
GameBoy Advance Spyro and Crash Cross-over
It's not exactly Capcom vs. SNK here, but nonetheless, Spryo the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot are crossing over into each others' worlds. The games are Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy, and the pair are separate side-scrolling platform titles that of course can be connected to one-another to unlock special features in each.
PS2 Sonic Team Interview
Cube.IGN's Sonic Team interview talks with director Yojira Ogawa of Sonic Team about Phantasy Star Online Episode III: C.A.R.D. Revolution, as well as some other topics, including how likely a fifth single player Phantasy Star RPG is.
Xbox New Links 2004 Course Available
Microsoft has released another new course for Links 2004. The latest, the Plantation Course at Kapalua golf resort is now available for download over Xbox Live. Like the previous course released, you'll have to pay a $4.99 fee in order to get it.
PS2 GameCube Misc. Interviews
Computer and Video Games has conducted an interview with Don L. Daglow of Stormfront Studios, talking with the studio's president about their upcoming title Forgotten Realms. Also, HomeLAN talks with Steve Wickes, the producer at Swordfish on their spy shooter Cold Winter. Both games are PS2-exclusives (although Forgotten Realms isn't explicitly so -- the PS2 version is just the only one that's been announced). Also, Silicon Knights' Denis Dyack has answered some questions about Metal Gear Solid: the Twin Snakes in IGN's forums.

Late Night Consoling

Aug 26, 2003 10:00pm CST tags: Konami, Namco, Activision, Games: Console, Sony, Stormfront Studios
As an increasingly vocal number of people have pointed out, the Misc Media/Previews section at the bottom of this post has gotten to be a bit unruly, and it's only going to get worse as we inch closer to the hectic holiday season. I mentioned before that I was going to fiddle around with a few possibilities -- and I have -- but unfortunately I wasn't able to come up with anything that worked. So, as I've done before when I've been stumped, I'm opening up the floor for submissions. Throw something together and either post a link in the comments or e-mail/shackmessage it to me, and I promise to take a look at all of them. And if there are enough acceptable entries I'll open up voting and we can all pick a new one. But, and this is the tricky part, there are some ground rules which will make this pretty challenging: it has to be entirely self-contained, meaning no links to separate pages (once I open that floodgate anyone who doesn't like console games will be nagging me to make the whole thing on a separate page, which I ain't doing), and it can't be split into multiple sections (so no Misc PS2 Previews, Misc GC Previews, etc.). Actually, I'm not totally adverse to that second one, but the problem there is that it adds a bit more work than I'd like to spend on that section and adds as many as four or five additional sub-posts where there was only one. So if you really want to see that section modified, let's see what you can come up with. The entire look and feel of this nightly news section comes from reader suggestions, so I'm always willing to look at ways to improve it.
