Publisher Taito has released new screenshots for both the Nintendo DS and PSP versions of its forthcoming classic shooter send-up Space Invaders Extreme, due for release next month alongside the company's Arkanoid DS.

Taito announced today that two revivals of classic arcade games, Space Invaders Extreme (NDS, PSP) and Arkanoid DS, will be released at North America retailers on June 17.

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Space Invaders, Space Invaders Extreme reimagines the classic game in a faster, more intense fashion, blending classic shooter gameplay with weapon upgrades, enemy variant types, boss battles and other twists. The game also includes online multiplayer and leaderboards.

Arkanoid DS features the classic brick-smashing gameplay expanded with three game modes, two or four person multiplayer, and unlockable levels and backgrounds. Unfortunately, the Arkanoid paddle—a classic-style dial controller which fits into the system's GBA slot—is currently not slated for a North American release.

Arkanoid DS and both the PSP and DS versions of Space Invaders Extreme will be priced at $19.99 when they hit shelves this coming June.

This game rules.
What makes Space Invaders Extreme DS so special is just how over-the-top it is--and how well it works despite the excessive glitz. Anchoring the game are the original sprite-based enemies, which do their same old dance of death, row by row. Until, of course, they are all vaporized by the solid beam weapon blasting forth from my innocent, pixelated ship. Didn't expect that, did you, sprite-aliens? Welcome to Earf.
