New Soul Calibur 4 DLC Ditches Console Exclusives; Brings Vader to Xbox 360, Yoda to PS3

Oct 17, 2008 2:02pm CST tags: Soul Calibur IV, DLC, Screenshots
Confirming the oft-speculated plan, publisher Namco Bandai has announced a blast of downloadable content that will bring the once platform-exclusive Star Wars characters from Project Soul's fighter Soul Calibur IV to the other console.

In other words, PlayStation 3 owners will be able to fight as the green mini-Jedi Yoda, whereas Xbox 360 players will finally have access to the mean old Sith Darth Vader. The content should fill the vacant character slot that is present in both versions.

The downloads are slated to hit Japan on October 23, with no North American date yet known. Yoda's PlayStation Store download will carry the price of 600 yen (roughly $5.91), and Vader will sell in the Xbox Live Marketplace for 400 Microsoft Points, equivalent to about 600 yen, though the North American value of 400 MS Points is $5.

Update: Namco Bandai has confirmed that the Vader and Yoda downloads will hit North America on October 23, with each selling for $5 through their respective marketplaces. Screenshots of the two characters dueling were also provided.

Soul Calibur 4 Impressions: Online Woes

Jul 28, 2008 10:13pm CST tags: Soul Calibur IV, Preview
When I first popped Soul Calibur IV into my Xbox 360, I was a bit overwhelmed. In the first few moments I was assaulted with talk of destroying equipment and armor, word of activating character skills, some type of one-hit kill Critical Finish thing.

As someone that sunk countless hours into Soul Calibur II but never touched Soul Calibur III, this was confusing, disappointing, and slightly worrisome. It seemed the sequel had lost the simple pick up and play mentality that defined its predecessors.

The more I've put into the game, the more that feeling of disappointment has lessened, replaced the familiar sensation of wanting, no, needing, to play more. However, there's still a twinge of disappointment, a notion that the sequel isn't everything I'd hoped for.

The online play has been problematic and prone to match-destroying lag. Character creation and customization isn't explained well, leading to much confusion. And despite pouring over all provided documentation, I still don't know how to... Read more

Soul Calibur 4 Hands-on Impressions

Apr 16, 2008 8:01pm CST tags: Soul Calibur IV, Preview
Two days ago, Soul Calibur IV (PS3, X360) was just another game coming out this summer. Now, after playing a build of it at the recent Namco Bandai press event, I very much want that final disc in my hands.

I was a big fan of Soul Calibur and its sequel, but for whatever reason chose not to partake in the third entry to Project Soul's series. When following these long-running franchises, which typically change very little between iterations, I find it is sometimes necessary to sit one out. Gorging yourself is always more fun when preceded by a period of fasting.

Well, I might be done fasting. The first "next-gen" version of the game, Soul Calibur IV is a finely crafted graphical treat. Call me shallow for saying so, but this thing looks fantastic in motion, and the graphical boost alone is enough reason to rekindle my still-burning soul.

Character detail is exceptional, but even more impressive are... Read more

Publisher Namco Bandai has announced that Soul Calibur IV (PS3, X360) will ship to North American retailers on July 29, according to a report from GameSpot.

Like many other highly anticipated titles these days, the latest entry in the Project Soul-developed 3D fighting series will arrive in both regular and limited editions.

While the standard $59.99 release will just contain the game, the $79.99 Premium Edition will arrive in metal packaging, complete with an art book, tournament kit, and unspecified "extra customization content."

Revealed last June, Soul Calibur IV is the first of the franchise to feature online multiplayer. Continuing the tradition of Soul Calibur II's console-specific characters, it includes Star Wars icon Darth Vader as an exclusive playable character for the PlayStation 3 version, with counterpart Yoda appearing only in the Xbox 360 edition.

Check back with Shacknews later this evening for our hands-on impressions from the latest build of Soul Calibur IV.
