Soldier of Fortune Preview

Sep 06, 1999 8:22pm CST tags: Activision, Soldier of Fortune
U-Games has a preview of Raven's upcoming Quake2 engine game, Soldier of Fortune. This is based on a meeting with Raven and Activision at the ECTS, and contains some screenshots. They talk about some of the technology and realism incorporated in the game and how Raven employed an ex-military consultant to get the game as close to a simulation as possible.
After the bloody horrors of Kingpin, you'd wonder if the world could be shocked to any greater degree by sheer bloodthirstiness in a first person shooter. Step in Soldier of Fortune, then, with an incredible array of corpses dancing to the tune of a hundred bullets ripping through them with deadly precision. However, the slightly depressing bloodbath of Kingpin here gives way to the intrigue of a genuinely well constructed simulation of mercenary warfare.

3D Action Planet has a preview up of Raven's Soldier of Fortune. They demo'd this at QuakeCon, and I played it a good amount. There is this one weapon you can use to shoot people, and it grips them, a la the Quake lightning gun. That's pretty smooth. It's pretty real to life, you get popped in the head, you're down for the count. But the action is fast... faster than Q3 - I think they said you are actually running around at 50mph.
When questions about the depth of the storyline and possible rivalry with Half-Life were brought up, he responded with the notion that "Soldier of Fortune is VERY story intensive and won’t disappoint the Half-Life fans." He was quick to add that "In fact, in Half-Life, the player was mostly a bystander in all of the action. In SoF, we drop you right into the middle of everything..."

Soldier of Fortune Deathmatch

Aug 10, 1999 3:12am CST tags: Soldier of Fortune
Marcus Whitlock of Raven Software has a pretty lengthy .plan update talking about progress of Soldier of Fortune. I actually got to check out the game a bit at QuakeCon99 which was really cool looking. At any rate here is a bit of what Marcus talks about, be sure to check out the full .plan

On the Soldier of Fortune front... I'm implementing the various deathmatch mods we're going to be including straight out of the box. Apart from standard deathmatch, there will be variants like assassin and arsenal (those of you who played TNP [Take No Prisoners] may recall these two). There will be other variants/mods but I won't go into them here just yet.
