Shack PSA: Half-Life 1 on Steam for 98 Cents

Nov 19, 2008 3:57pm CST tags: Half-Life, Steam, Shack PSA
In honor of the tenth anniversary of the original Half-Life (PC), developer Valve has put the game on sale on its Steam digital distribution service for 98 cents, a nod to its 1998 release.

The oft-delayed Half-Life was Valve's first release and went on to receive countless Game of the Year awards and high-ranking spots in several publications' "best games of all time" lists. The studio has followed up the adventures of silent protagonist Gordon Freeman with a sequel and two episodic mini-sequels, with Episode Three on the way.

At 98 cents, it's an affordable bit of gaming history--even for non-gamers--but the deal won't last long. The shooter returns to its usual $9.99 price point at 12:00 noon PST on Friday, November 21.

Shacknews readers who haven't played the game are encouraged to give it a whirl before the real Gordon Freeman's antics at the Large Hadron Collider get us all killed.

Shacknews thanks user Leviathan41 for the tip.

The original LocoRoco, a PSP exclusive, released in 2006 to rave reviews. It was followed up by LocoRoco Cocoreccho!, a downloadable interactive screensaver for the PlayStation 3.

LocoRoco 2 does not have a confirmed US release at this time.

With Rock Band 2 hitting store shelves, developer Harmonix and owner MTV Games have dropped the price of the Special Edition bundle for the original Rock Band, which pack a guitar, microphone and drum kit, along with the multi-instrument music game.

As of today, prices for the Rock Band Special Edition in the US are as follows:

  • PlayStation 2 / Wii: Now $100, Was $160/$170
  • Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3: Now $140, Was $170

All Rock Band Special Editions come with a wired drum kit. While the PS2, Wii and PS3 bundles come with a wireless guitar, the Xbox 360 package includes a wired model.

Instruments from the original Rock Band are compatible with Rock Band 2 for their respective platforms, with owners of the PS3 and Xbox 360 original able to export 55 of the 58 songs from the first Rock Band into the sequel for $5.

AudioSurf (PC), Dylan Fitterer's music-generated puzzle-inspired racer (or is it racing-inspired puzzler?), is on sale on Valve's digital distribution service Steam for a measly $2.49--a 75% price drop for this week only.

"We've introduced a shopping cart to Steam. To celebrate AudioSurf is now just $2.49, this week only. ADD TO CART!" implores the Steam homepage.

Shack PSA: Overlord Playable for Free on GameTap Tomorrow

Oct 22, 2008 6:20pm CST tags: Overlord, Shack PSA, GameTap
Attention Shacknews shoppers! We at Shacknews know that you're a cheapskate that you appreciate a good value, and with that in mind we thought we'd direct you over to GameTap, where Overlord (PC, 360, PS3) is free starting tomorrow.

Overlord, a minion-leading action game with a fantasy-world slant, was released in 2007 from Triumph Studios to solid reviews. "You have a busy day: peasants to slaughter, villages to burn, hopes to dash," implores the game's promotional writing. "There's a baby with some candy that needs taking the next town over," it adds.

So, if not for the fact that it's free, go play Overlord for the sake of the candy.

Shack PSA: Peggle Nights Now on Steam, 50% Off

Oct 15, 2008 9:27pm CST tags: Peggle Nights, Steam, Shack PSA
Steam has been a very good boy today: first he starts accepting money for Valve's super-highly-anticipated Left 4 Dead, and now he brings you, as promised, PopCap's Peggle Nights--at a deep discount, even.

The pachinko-esque ball-bouncing sequel released last month to rave reviews from Shacknews editor Chris Faylor. He didn't so much play the game as giggle at Bjorn the unicorn and eat PopCap cookies, but it was a resoundingly positive review. Now that it's on Steam, Peggle Nights' price was slashed by half, retailing on Valve's digital distribution service for $9.99. It's available now.

Shack PSA: Left 4 Dead Now Available for Steam Pre-Purchase, 10% Off

Oct 15, 2008 6:23pm CST tags: Left 4 Dead, Steam, Shack PSA
Left 4 Dead is getting close to its November 18 launch, and Valve is now happy to accept your money: the PC edition is now available for pre-purchase on Steam with a 10% discount before the game's release, making for a price of $44.99.

"With just over four weeks until launch, Left 4 Dead is showing every sign of topping The Orange Box on both the PC and Xbox 360, at retail as well as on Steam," said Valve marketing VP Doug Lombardi in a press release.

For those resisting the PC incarnation of the run-away-from-zombies shooter, the Xbox 360 version will hit retail on the same day. The 10% discount also applies to pre-purchase customers at retail outlets, according to Valve's press release.

"Our pre-sell numbers at retail have jumped to over 65% greater than Orange Box at the same proximity to launch," Lombardi continued. "We're seeing tremendous enthusiasm for the product in what promises to be another great year for gaming on both platforms," he added.

Published by Capcom, the game was once known as Plunder and carries the affectionate nickname "Pimps at Sea" for taking its inspiration from a long-running inside joke at Halo developer Bungie. Certain Affinity was founded by Bungie alumnus Max Hoberman.

The aquatic-pimping title will hit Xbox Live Arcade on Wednesday for a price of 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Release for the PlayStation Store will come the following day at the same price, and a PC version hitting digital distribution services including Steam will arrive later, also at $10.

Shack PSA: Mega Man 9 Boxes On Sale at 5:00 CDT

Oct 09, 2008 11:56am CST tags: Mega Man 9, Shack PSA
Remember the Mega Man 9 box, complete with old-school, hand-drawn artwork and exaggerated promo writing on the back? Well, Capcom was indeed listening and has decided to put a small number of those boxes on sale--today.

An entry on the official Capcom Blog states that the boxes--which are press kits, not the actual Mega Man 9 downloadable game--will be sold, starting at 5:00 PM Central Time, at a price of $49.95.

So while Inti Creations' famously difficult 8-bit revival won't be in the box, customers will get an NES cartridge containing a CD full of screenshots and other tidbits used to promote the game.

Capcom says that quantities are very limited, so potential buyers should make a tidy, single-file line at the Capcom Store. Of course, this is The Internet, so a "tidy, single-file line" really means hitting the refresh button as fast as possible at 4:59 PM.
