Game and Film Incubator Radar Group Announced; Miller Claims Firm Is 'Desparately' Needed

Mar 18, 2008 10:00am CST tags: Scott Miller, Radar Group
A number of game industry veterans have banded together to form Radar Group, a firm that describes itself an "entertainment entity to incubate, manage and produce Intellectual Properties for cross-media leveraging in video game and film markets."

Informally unveiled over the weekend, the company's roster includes 3D Realms co-founder Scott Miller, who will serve as chief creative officer, and FormGen co-founder Jim Perkins, who has been appointed CEO.

Radar noted that it will only work with original, not licensed, properties. The company currently has three projects in the works--Earth No More, Prey 2, and Incarnate--with two more unannounced projects in development.

In the film market, Radar has partnered with Depth Entertainment and its president Scott Faye. Faye is currently acting as the producer on the game-to-film adaptation of Max Payne, which stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis.

"We promise that Uwe Boll will never direct one of our movies," Miller vowed on his blog, which noted his belief that "too many financial execs [are] leading inherently creative businesses" and that the used game market is hurting developers.

"We're something our industry desperately needs," he explained in today's announcement. "Radar is teaming up with many of the industry's top independent studios to help them create original IP in which they own a substantial ownership stake.

"In today's industry it's nearly impossible, unless you're Epic or Valve, to... Read more

Scott Miller on...Everything

Nov 29, 2006 3:02pm CST tags: 3D Realms, Industry News: PC & Console, Scott Miller
Gamasutra has a comprehensive interview with 3D Realms' Scott Miller, speaking on a broad range of topics relating to modern game development. Miller touches on 3D Realms' unique practice of partnering with smaller studios for IP creation, why he's not on board with Steam and episodic content, the importance of game-specific IP, and why developing for consoles is important these days. Despite his misgivings about Steam, Miller does see digital delivery as a crucial upcoming trend both on PC and consoles.
I’d love to see Steam spin off as their own company. That would be a smart move. That removes the conflict of interest issue and it would give Steam focus as a separate company. Since they’re buried in Valve, if Valve doesn’t do well for a game or two, Steam will get cut before their internal game development. They have to consider Steam secondary. I don’t know why they hang on to Steam as an internal thing. They’d probably rule the game industry if they did. A truly independent company is going to come along, and I know of a couple of start-ups. I think one of these companies will emerge as the product leader and they should be able to take Steam’s spot.

My overall impression is that digital distribution is definitely going to be a huge force in the future. I’ve said for quite a while that the next generation consoles will have this built in from the start. Day one releases will be available online. I think brick and mortar places will lose a lot of business this way. Microsoft and Sony have to be saying “if we cut out the retailers, we get a bigger piece of the pie.” There’s no issue with it, you just need to get people bigger hard drives. Digital delivery is going to be a key part of console revenue.

Eurogamer has publised the second part of their interview with Scott Miller of 3DRealms. One of the better pieces I've seen out there in a while and well worth a read as Scott has some pretty good insight into where the industry is heading. He's been around for a while.

Eurogamer: One of the more interesting tidbits in a recent New York Times article was an Activision official revealing that their average game now costs $4,000,000 to develop [snip]
Scott: "It's headed for further stagnation. Publishers will take less risks as costs rise, and we're going to see more sequels and fewer new games that take chances by exploring new styles of gameplay. With the cost of games rising so high, fewer developers will be able to afford to make the games they want to make, and be under the publisher's thumb to make games in genres that are safe and proven."
