THQ Sees $431 Million Yearly Loss, Gets More Credit

May 06, 2009 5:12pm CST tags: THQ, Saints Row 2, Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War 2, Software Sales
Publisher THQ today announced the results of the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2009, revealing a net loss of $431.1 million. Described by THQ CEO Brian Farrell as "a challenging fiscal 2009," the year saw higher losses and lower sales than FY2008.

Net sales dipped to $830 million in FY2009, down from $1.03 billion in FY2008, with FY2008's net loss coming at a relatively less severe $35.3 million. Despite the slide, Farrell expressed confidence for the next year, citing THQ's recently completed cost-cutting measures and its increased focus on quality, brands and profitability.

The company also touted its recent sales highlights, pointing out that Saints Row 2 has now shipped over 2.8 million units and noting that Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II "debuted as the best selling PC game across major video game markets worldwide."

In a separate announcement, THQ added that it has "signed a commitment letter for a $35 million senior secured credit facility with Bank of America, NA," with THQ CFO Paul Pucino explaining that "we are pursuing this credit facility as a prudent backup to our $141 million cash and short-term investment balance at March 31, 2009."

Voliton has detailed Ultor Exposed, the first of three Saints Row 2 downloadable content packs for Xbox 360 and PS3, via Eurogamer.

In the new Ultor Exposed mission arc, an Ultor microbiologist played by adult entertainment actress Tera Patrick joins the--tee hee--gang bangers of the Third Street Saints to--titter titter--expose the evil megacorporation. Which conveniently involves many explosions.

As Tera Patrick was previously featured in Saints Row 2's advertising campaign, we tentatively await news that the next DLC pack will bring Gary Busey to Stillwater.

Saints Row 2 PC Hits Steam, Gets European Date

Jan 07, 2009 12:28pm CST tags: Saints Row 2, Steam
Just one day after unspecified issues delayed the Steam release of Saints Row 2 on PC, the open-world game is now available through Valve's digital distribution platform.

The title is also available for digital download via Direct2Drive, though as with the retail version, buyers will be required to install Steam to authenticate and play the PC release.

Presently, the PC release is only available in the Americas, but developer Volition has announced that it will hit Europe on January 23 and Australia on February 5.

The PC version of Saint's Row 2 follows the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 edition, which launched in October 2008.

Saints Row 2 Steam Release Delayed

Jan 06, 2009 1:58pm CST tags: Saints Row 2, Delay, Steam
Saints Row 2 PC will miss its expected release today on Steam due to technical issues, according to developer Volition.

Retail copies of the game, which require Steam to run, will not be affected by the delay.

"It appears that we have experienced some issues with the Steam client and both THQ and Valve are working on the issue and hope to have it resolved soon," said Volition community manager V-Singular in an official forum post.

"This delay does not affect the retail version (in-store) of Saints Row 2 PC, but the game will not be available for digital download off of Steam today," added Singular. "Again, anyone who picks up a boxed copy today will be able to authenticate and play SR2 once installed."

Saints Row 2 PC System Requirements Released; Delayed Port Uses Steam for DRM

The late-to-the-party PC port of Saints Row 2 will use only Steam for its copy protection, according to a forum post by Volition community manager Singular.

"We're trying to use a very low impact DRM here, since we've seen some of the headaches faced by other major game releases in recent months," said the spokesperson.

Saints Row 2 PC will be available January 6 in stores and on Steam.

The developer of the open-world title also revealed the minimum and recommended requirements for the game, which can be found below: ... Read more

THQ Signs In-game Ad Deal with Microsoft's Massive

Nov 24, 2008 7:02pm CST tags: Saints Row 2
Microsoft's in-game advertising firm Massive Inc. today announced that it has signed an exclusive deal with publisher THQ.

The multiyear deal will see Massive serving dynamic in-game ads into many of THQ's existing and future products, with the company mentioning Saints Row 2 as a prime example.

"With an open-world, mission-based game such as 'Saints Row 2' coming into the Massive network, we can work creatively with advertisers to place their brands in new, edgy environments," said edgy Massive COO Eric Bassman.

Saints Row 2 PC Pushed to 2009

Oct 30, 2008 10:06am CST tags: Saints Row 2, Delay
Following the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release of Saints Row 2 in September, developer Volition and publisher THQ have confirmed that the PC version of the open-world gangster action game is now slated to arrive on January 5, 2009.

At the time of the console releases, THQ told Shacknews that there was "no official word" as to when the PC version would hit store shelves.

"The PC version was delayed because we wanted to make the highest quality game across all platforms, but it just needed more time," explained Volition community moderator V-Singular, with IGN confirming the validity of his statements.

"The game is a port of the console version from an external company, but that doesn't mean the code can just be copied over, and ship it out. The PC version is still being produced and tested at Volition with support from the design and programming teams as needed. This is in no way a hands-off external port of the game."

He added: "Our goal is to give PC users the same quality product and performance level which you've seen on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, along with all of the review feedback."

Saints Row 2 Condemned by NY Police Unions

Oct 15, 2008 3:10pm CST tags: Saints Row 2, Controversy
With Volition's Saints Row 2 (PC, 360, PS3) hitting shelves today for console editions, it took virtually no time for the game to get condemned by the boys in blue--in particular, the police unions of New York City.

"New York's powerful police unions say that a violent new video game called 'Saints Row 2 is an abomination," reports WPEC in New York, which was spotted by Kotaku. "In the game, the player controls a gang member who can steal, do drugs and kill as many characters as possible, including police officers."

Union representatives were standing behind Manhattan District Attorney candidate Leslie Crocker-Snyder as she spoke in condemnation of the game yesterday, the game's official release date.

While marking the game's first post-release controversy, it's hardly the first for the open-world mayhem sim. Just a week ago, the game raised eyebrows for including a streaking feature.

'No Official Word' on Saints Row 2 PC Release Date

Oct 14, 2008 1:13pm CST tags: Saints Row 2, Release Date
While the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions of Volition's open-world gangster action game Saints Row 2 head off to retailers today, publisher THQ has informed Shacknews that it still doesn't know when the PC version will hit.

"There is no official word on the PC ship date other than that it doesn't ship today," explained a THQ representative. The PC version was confirmed earlier this year. No date was provided, though retailers listed a simultaneous release for PC and consoles.

Packing online cooperative play throughout the entirety of its campaign along with a variety of multiplayer modes, Saints Row 2 will sell for $60 on consoles.

Saints Row 2 Trailer Warns of Impending Release

Oct 09, 2008 2:30pm CST tags: Saints Row 2, Trailer
Publisher THQ has put out a launch trailer for Volition's open-world mayhem project, Saints Row 2. The trailer, free of streaking, is a cinematic set-up for the game's story involving the gangs of Stilwater taking on the city police.

Featuring political awareness and the ever-irreverent Gary Busey, Saints Row 2 drops next Tuesday, October 14, on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with a PC version apparently landing the same day.

Saints Row 2 is Going Streaking

Oct 08, 2008 5:13pm CST tags: Saints Row 2, Controversy
A trailer has appeared on the internet sporting a naked woman--blurred in sensitive areas--running around the world of Volition's Saints Row 2 (PC, 360, PS3) and generally causing mayhem.

The trailer isn't a modification or a hack. It's a streaking feature.

"In terms of backlash from the game's content, we are not too concerned," said Craig Mitchell of publisher THQ to Edge. "THQ and Volition have worked within the guidelines of the ESRB and the international ratings boards and the game has been rated appropriately," he added. Saints Row 2 received an "M for Mature" rating from the ESRB.

Edge describes the streaking feature as follows:

Streaking is activated by pressing down twice on the controller's d-pad, at which point players are told to "Streak closely to as many people as possible!" A good streak will earn "Respect" stats.... Read more

Saints Row 2 Multiplayer Details: Snatch Ho's

Sep 26, 2008 11:45am CST tags: Saints Row 2
Volition's open-world mayhem simulator Saint's Row 2 will inevitably be compared to the grand-daddy of the genre, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 4. Those comparisons will doubtlessly be extended to the game's multiplayer features, but in that department Saint's Row 2, with competitive and co-operative modes, is looking like a real contender.

The game's signature mode is to be called Strongarm, according to Destructoid's hands-on with the game. In Strongarm, two teams of four fight for territory and cash in a random mish-mash of activities.

"One minute you can be participating in a race, the next you're killing a pimp to claim a ho in the 'Snatch' activity, causing as much chaos as possible in 'Mayhem,' or smashing into other cars in 'Destruction Derby,'" explains the preview.

Another intriguing mode is Stronghold, a capture-and-hold mode... Read more
