Oz Game Dead?

Mar 03, 2004 3:43pm CST tags: Atari, Return to Oz
Though there was never much info on the game, PC.IGN is reporting that American McGee's Wizard of Oz title is "dead in the water". The game's original publisher, Infogrames/Atari, dropped the game and apparently no other publishers were willing to take a gamble on an unproven property. McGee did sell the Oz concept to Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney last year, and hopes there will be a renewed interest if a movie ever is made. Update: GameSpot has their own story about this, and according to McGee the Xbox version is still being shopped around.

Oz Tidbit

There is a really brief blurb on American McGee's next game on Game Doctor. They hope to be 70 to 80% done with design on the Wizard of Oz game in two months, which is when programming will start. More focus will be put on gameplay this time around, though the visuals should still be like what we saw in Alice. The game's score will be provided by Peter Gabriel of all people. Thanks badman.

Return To Oz Details

Jan 24, 2002 1:33pm CST tags: Return to Oz
The weekly Game Over column on CNN Money, has posted some of the first details on American McGee's next game. We mentioned before that he would be adapting Wizard of Oz into a "Return to Oz" game. Now just called Oz, this game, unlike Alice, will actually take place before the adventures of Dorothy. A publisher and developer for the game have been lined up, a comic book version is being worked on, as is a model toy line and Dimension Films already has first dibs on a movie version.

"We're showing the creation and formation of Oz before the history you know," said McGee.
Among the questions to be answered: Why are the scarecrow and tin man there? And why are some witches good and some evil? You'll play a "semi-reluctant hero" called upon to save Oz in its pre-Dorothy days. The game is tentatively set for release in Christmas 2003.

Return to Oz Confirmed

Got an email about this a little earlier that was a bit vague (and the return address bounced) A little while ago we carried a story about Return to Oz, the next possible game following American McGee's Alice. well looks like the VE guys have gotten some email about this too. The latest issue of WIRED magazine has an article with American McGee which confirms that in fact the next game will be Return To Oz. Loosely based on the Wizard of Oz universe from the (not so popular in theatres, but a hit on TV) movie.

in the brand new issue of Wired there is a wax model he made of a rather evil looking simian that he will be using in his "Oz" game due out in 2003

Lets all hope for robotic frogs.
