Dawn of War 2 Announced, Eventual Beta Access for Soulstorm Buyers

Apr 03, 2008 9:20am CST tags: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War 2, Relic Entertainment, THQ
Confirming earlier reports, publisher THQ today announced the sci-fi RTS sequel Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II for PC.

Developed by Dawn of War and Company of Heroes veteran Relic Entertainment, Dawn of War II will feature a non-linear single-player game, a co-op multiplayer campaign, and destructible environments.

"We started with everything fans loved about the original Dawn of War and then added more than they ever could have hoped for," said Relic general manager Tarrnie Williams.

While no release date was provided, THQ did note that those who purchase the recently-released stand-alone DoW expansion pack Soulstorm will be able to participate in an eventual invite-only multiplayer beta for the sequel.

Supposed Dawn of War 2 Details Emerge

Mar 28, 2008 10:27am CST tags: Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War 2, Relic Entertainment
The first details on Relic Entertainment's upcoming sci-fi RTS sequel Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 (PC) have reportedly emerged from the most recent issue of Dutch gaming magazine PCGameplay.

According to fan translations over at the RelicNews Forums, Dawn of War 2 will sport multicore processor support, DirectX 10 optimizations, and incorporate several elements from Relic's WWII RTS Company of Heroes (PC), such as environment destruction and the ability to occupy buildings.

While only two forces were listed in the article--Orks and Space Marines--both will feature full co-op campaigns. Though other playable races will be revealed later in the year, it was implied that not all will have co-op campaigns.

The fans also report that players will be limited to six squads at a time, at least in the campaign, though each can be customized with new items and equipment. "You really have to look out for your squads and don't treat them like cannon fodder," wrote translator Togra.

Said to be in development since September of 2005 by a team of 55 people, Dawn of War 2 is expected, at the very soonest, in early 2009. More concrete information, including screenshots, should arrive in the near future.

THQ CFO Resigns for Unspecified Reasons

Nov 26, 2007 4:22pm CST tags: Industry News: PC & Console, THQ, Relic Entertainment
THQ executive vice president and chief financial officer Edward Zinser has today resigned from his position at the company.

With his departure taking effect immediately, Rasmus van der Colff will serve as a temporary CFO while the company investigates a long-term replacement. Colff joined THQ as vice president and controller in May 2007, and is said to have more than two decades in accounting experience.

The publisher, which recently lowered its sales estimates of the current fiscal year to $1.06 billion and delayed three titles, claimed that the resignation "is in no way related to the financial condition, results of operations or future prospects of THQ." As the action is not directly related to the company's financial well-being, it refuses to elaborate on the reasons behind Zinser's vacating of his position.

Homeworld Franchise Potentially Ressurected As Relic Owner THQ Acquires Trademark

Nov 03, 2007 8:03pm CST tags: Games: PC, THQ, Relic Entertainment
Fans of the groundbreaking Homeworld series of 3D space RTS games may yet have reason to hope for a new sequel.

Forum members of the fan site Relic News have today uncovered a US trademark document that appears to prove the rights to the Homeworld name have changed hands from Vivendi Universal to publisher THQ, the owner of original Homeworld developer Relic Entertainment.

Though only the trademark is mentioned, it would seem unlikely that THQ attained the name without also acquiring the license to use the intellectual property. The law firm now handling the trademark, Wolf Greenfield, specializes in IP transactions.

The document, which appoints a slew of new attorneys to represent Homeworld, is signed by THQ executive vice president of business and legal affairs James M. Kennedy. The transaction took place on August 14, 2007, with a similar transfer of the Homeworld: Cataclysm expansion trademark having been signed on the same day.

While the ties to THQ only appear on the most recent documents, Vivendi Universal lawyer Rod Rigole had transferred power of attorney to Douglas R. Wolf, ... Read more

New Warhammer 40K Expansion Announced

Sep 26, 2007 10:58am CST tags: Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, Relic Entertainment
THQ today officially announced the next expansion pack for Relic Entertainment's PC RTS Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War.

As previously reported, the standalone expansion pack is titled Soulstorm. Co-developed by Relic Entertainment and Iron Lore Entertainment for PC, it will bring with it a new campaign and two new payable races, one of which is the Dark Eldar. The other is currently unknown.

News of Iron Lore's involvement with the title does not come as much of a shock, as the Titan Quest developer recently told Shacknews that gamers could expect more action RPGs and RTS titles from the studio.

"In Dawn of War - Soulstorm, we've taken Games Workshop's epic war from one planet to an entire star system," said Relic general manager Tarrnie Williams. "Allowing gamers to play nine unique races, introducing air units and providing multiplayer achievements for the first time creates a tremendous amount of new and challenging strategic gameplay for all players."

Soulstorm hits stores in spring 2008.

Following news of the game going gold earlier this month, Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts has shipped to stores. Publisher THQ previously indicated the title would arrive in stores this month, but had not pinned down a specific date.

The standalone expansion to Relic's acclaimed PC WWII RTS Company of Heroes features two new armies, each with their own campaign, DirectX 10 support, mission persistence, improved AI and physics, and a dynamic weather system. The original Company of Heroes is not required, though the two releases interface to provide new multiplayer options.

Another expansion pack for Relic Entertainment's PC RTS Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is on the way.

Titled Soulstorm, the third Dawn of War expansion is confirmed to feature new Dark Eldar units and will likely cover the usual bases, including new maps, units, and single-player missions. The initial details appeared in a listing of the online extras for the October issue of PC gaming magazine Games for Windows.

Issue 11 of Games for Windows arrives in stores September 30. Expect more information then.

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts Goes Gold, Arrives Later This Month

Sep 12, 2007 10:43am CST tags: Company of Heroes, Gone Gold, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, Relic Entertainment
Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts has hit gold status. Publisher THQ declined to pin down an exact ship date, but expects the game to bombard stores later this month--an earlier release than the November estimate Nick Breckon mentioned in his detailed impressions.

Published by THQ, the standalone expansion to Relic's acclaimed PC WWII RTS Company of Heroes includes two new armies, each with their own campaign, DirectX 10 support, mission persistence, improved AI and physics, and a dynamic weather system. Though the first Company of Heroes is not required, the two releases interface to provide new multiplayer options.

"Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is a massive game," Relic general manager Tarrnie Williams confidently stated. "We've consistently redefined the standard for excellence in the RTS genre over the last five years, and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts represents another leap forward in technology and strategic gameplay."

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts Announced (Updated)

Apr 05, 2007 4:56am CST tags: Games: PC, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, Relic Entertainment
Relic Entertainment's successful World War II strategy title Company of Heroes will be receiving a standalone followup in the form of Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, publisher THQ announced today. Opposing Fronts will feature two campaigns, one from the perspective of the British 2nd Army in its drive on Caen, France, and one from the perspective of the German Panzer Elite repelling the Allies' Operation Market Garden airborne assault. Both forces will also be added to the game's multiplayer component, which the expansion will augment with additional modes.

Opposing Fronts will include various technical and gameplay updates, including improved artificial intelligence and physics, dynamic gameplay-affecting weather, mission persistence, and a revised version of the Essence Engine with DirectX 10 support. The game does not require the original Company of Heroes to run.

"In Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts players will experience fast-paced dynamic tactics like never before, in two of the most brutal World War II campaigns ever fought," said Relic GM Tarrnie Williams. "We're delivering yet again on our commitment to leading the way in strategic gaming with the best, most innovative titles available."

THQ plans to ship Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts this fall.

Update: THQ has sent along two screenshots of the game.

Source Licensed for Upcoming Fantasy Action Game

Mar 19, 2007 2:11pm CST tags: MMO, Valve, Games: PC, Relic Entertainment
Valve along with Korean developer and publisher Nexon today announced that Nexon has licensed the Source engine for use in an upcoming PC game. No details were revealed about the game, beyond that it is a "fantasy based, third-person action title."

"We evaluated all the engine technologies available for licensing and Source was our best choice," said producer Dong-gun Kim. "With support for integrated network-physics, high-end visuals, and constant adoption of new features, Source is both the most flexible as well as the most robust technology set available today."

Nexon is best known as the developer of Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, one of the first graphical MMOs; it originally launched in 1996 and was brought to North America in 1998. The company has stated its intention to stake a larger claim in the Western market, and has established a North American game studio and publisher. Last year, Alex Garden, co-founder of Homeworld and and Warhammer 40:000 Dawn of War developer Relic Entertainment, joined Nexus to head up its North American division.

Suggesting that Nexon's Source project will have a strong online component--which would come as little surprise given the company's heritage--Valve president co-founder Gabe Newell stated, "We look forward to working closely with NEXON to supply them with the tools and technology needed to create a working base for creating top-notch games that will be recognized as world-class online offerings."

  • Okami, Oblivion top GDCA award noms; Schafer to host

[ps2] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [wii] [psp]

This week, the full list of nominations for the always high quality Game Developers Choice Awards, hosted every year during Game Developers Conference by the International Game Developers Association, was revealed. Dominating the list of nominees with four nods each were Clover Studio's Okami (PS2) and Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (X360, PC). The former was commended for Character Design, Game Design, and Visual Arts, and the latter for Game Design, Visual Arts, and Writing, while both games took nods for Best Game.

Strikingly unlike the AIAS Interactive Achievement Awards, which perennially snub titles from non-member publishers, the GDCA honors any game that receives enough nominations from its voting body, which includes professionals from throughout the games industry. Notably, Capcom, whose games have been absent from the AIAS awards for several years, tied with Nintendo for second most total GDCA nominations; each publisher garnered five. Capcom's non-Okami nod was in Technology for Dead Rising (X360). Nintendo's five were split between Wii Sports (Wii) and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GCN, Wii), each of which is up for Best Game, making Nintendo the only publisher to have two titles in the running for the show's top honor. The top performing publisher was Microsoft, which saw developers Rare and Epic take three nods each for Viva Pinata (X360) and Gears of War (X360); the latter title is up for Best Game.

The other games to receive multiple nods were Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes (PC), Sony Computer Entertainment's LocoRoco (PSP), Rockstar Vancouver's Bully (PS2), and Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII (PS2), each with two nominations. Despite strong critical and commercial success in the portable segment last year, LocoRoco was the only portable game to make the list, though Daxter (PSP) developer Ready at Dawn was recognized in the New Studio category alongside fellow newcomers such as Iron Lore Entertainment for Titan Quest (PC) and Naked Sky Entertainment for RoboBlitz (X360, PC).

The Game Developers Choice Awards will be presented during this year's Game Developers Conference at San Francisco's Moscone Center on March 7 at 6:30pm. Hosting the ceremony will be Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer, whose studio last year achieved four nominations and two wins for its excellent game Psychonauts (PS2, Xbox, PC). Mega64 and DJ Chris (by whom the IGDA likely means MC Chris) will be providing entertainment.

  • GTA: Vice City Stories to be told on PS2

    [ps2] [psp]

Last year, Rockster Leeds' Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories was released a PSP exclusive, following up on the studio's prior PSP game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. Liberty City Stories was eventually released on PlayStation 2 as well, though shortly before its release Rockstar representatives indicated that there were no such plans in the works for the second game in the spinoff series.

Today, the publisher officially confirmed via a very brief press release that, as many have suspected, Vice City Stories is indeed coming to PlayStation 2 after all--and soon. The game will be on North American store shelves on March 6, 2007, to follow in Europe three days later.

  • ATVI to up Nintendo output, take Downhill Jam to PS2

[ps2] [ps3] [xbox] [xbox360] [gamecube] [wii] [ds] [psp] [gba]

After announcing record financial results today, publisher Activision held a followup conference call during which company executives discussed the announced figures as well as spoke on the company's plans for the near future. Chairman and CEO Bobby Kotick congratulated the company on its performance on next-gen (ie, current-gen) platforms, noting that Activision was the only company to be within the top three publishers on all three current home consoles. Kotick went on to speak more specifically on Wii, noting that the company plans to strengthen its output on that platform as well as on Nintendo DS. "Activision recognized the Wii opportunity on, and we had one of the largest lineups at launch. In fiscal 08, we will double our product offerings on Wii and DS as we plan to be even more successful on these platforms," he said, adding, "To date, there has been strong consumer response to all three next-generation consoles, which truly are delivering new gaming experiences to broader, more diverse audiences than ever before."

Despite Activision's overall Wii performance, coming in at number two on the platform, Toys for Bob's Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam sold notably below Neversoft's main franchise entry Tony Hawk's Project 8 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Perhaps partially as a result, the company revealed that Downhill Jam will be released on PlayStation 2 in calendar Q2 2007. Also likely contributing to the decision was Activision's strong success on PlayStation 2, most significantly by way of the company's star performer, Harmonix's Guitar Hero II on PS2.

Activision noted that it expects PS2 sales to stay strong through 2007, matching calendar year sales for Wii and PS3 and coming in close to sales for Xbox 360. It also projects continued strong sales in the handheld sector.

According to this story on FiringSquad, Relic Entertainment looks to be exploring new genres for upcoming projects. Predominantly an RTS developer up until this point (with the exception of the Xbox 360 action game The Outfit), the THQ Careers website notes one Senior Designer job opening for "our new RPG project" while this job opening, also for a Senior Designer, mentions that this person will "join our MMO team". Relic most recently released Company of Heroes and the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War expansion pack Dark Crusade.

Microsoft Officially Launches Games for Windows Line

Sep 18, 2006 1:43pm CST tags: Games: PC, Microsoft, Games for Windows, Relic Entertainment
Microsoft today announced that it has officially begun its unified Games for Windows program at the retail level with the release of two titles, Traveller's Tales' LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, and Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes. All games participating in Games for Windows will feature a distinctive branding bar similar to those used on console game boxes. Games for Windows titles are required to meet a number of criteria, including widescreen support, various reliability standards, 64-bit Windows support, Xbox 360 controller support for games with gamepad control options, streamlined game installation, the ability to be launched from within Windows Media Center, as well as Windows Vista-specific features such as compatibility with the upcoming operating system's integrated Games Explorer.

In addition to the release of these first two games, September will also see 7500 retail stores across the United States begin to display Games for Windows branding. Ziff Davis will also launch its Official Games for Windows magazine, a rebranding of its long running publication Computer Gaming World. See our Games for Windows overview for more about the company's initiatives.

There's quite a bit of Xbox 360 news today.
  • 360 Dashboard Update Coming in the Past?

    [xbox360]

Some users on the official Xbox forums uncovered likely details about the next Xbox 360 Dashboard update, by way of Microsoft's own Knowledge Base website, which explains and troubleshoots features and problems with Microsoft products. These features include active download (the much requested ability to download files while performing other tasks on the 360), and an option to boot to the Dashboard rather than straight to the game inserted into the DVD-ROM drive, among others. Neither link is currently active, likely having been removed by Microsoft after the news started to spread. Interestingly, the target date for these features was yesterday, May 23, suggesting that they are complete or nearly complete and should be headed to Xbox 360 consoles soon.

In a Shacknews interview conducted during this year's GDC, Microsoft's Scott Henson mentioned a few Dashboard improvements in the pipeline, including active download as well as unspecified organizational revisions to Marketplace. Presumably, these will be included in an upcoming patch as well.

  • More from Fabula Nova Crystallis

    [ps3]

At its pre-E3 press conference this year, Square Enix announced a multiplatform project called Fabula Nova Crystallis. Much like the pantheon of games that has sprung up around Final Fantasy VII and turned that game into a franchise in its own right, Square Enix is already developing several games bearing the name "Final Fantasy XIII," in addition to the main game headed to PlayStation 3. These games along with XIII itself will be collectively referred to as Fabula Nova Crystallis. They do not share a specific setting, story, or set of characters, but rather are influenced by similar mythology. Currently announced are Final Fantasy Versus XIII, an action game for PS3, and Final Fantasy Agito XIII, an online RPG for mobile phones.

At a Japanese press conference yesterday, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada noted that there will be further games falling under Fabula Nova Crystallis. Six projects are currently in the works, including those already announced.

  • User Caricatures Common on Wii?

    [nintendo]

In Chris Morris' latest Game Over column on CNN/Money, Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto speaks on the new "Wii" name, potential unrevealed features for the machine, and the competition. Miyamoto admits that, at first, even he preferred the name "Revolution" to "Wii," but acknowledged that it is "almost threatening" and unacceptable for Nintendo's goals with the device. He also expressed that despite his expectation that Sony's PS3 would be expensive, the final price was "a bit of a shock." In regards to the motion sensing capability in PS3's controller, Miyamoto said, "We've gotten used to others copying what we do – and we're having a lot of fun with it."

During Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference, the company showed off the tennis game from its Wii Sports compilation, and several player models in the game had customized cartoon faces representing their real life players--company president Satoru Iwata, marketing VP Reggie Fils-Aime, and Miyamoto. In today's interview Miyamoto revealed that this personalization functionality may be something that is extended beyond Wii sports to other first- and third-party games. He did not go into details as to how this would be achieved, though it may work by way of a camera peripheral or by allowing players to "draw" faces with the Wii remote.

  • First Round of 360 Price Drops Begins

    [xbox360]

Though we've seen a few third party Xbox 360 games ship at a price point below $59.99, the vast majority of titles so far have come in at that widely accepted standard. Inevitably, however, prices will fall, and some games that launched at $59.99 have now been marked down to $39.99 by their publishers in the last few weeks. Most retailers should reflect these updated prices soon, or should already have done so. These games include:

    - Burnout Revenge (Criterion Games)
    - FIFA Soccer 06: Road to FIFA World Cup (EA Canada)
    - Madden NFL 06 (EA Tiburon)
    - NBA Live 06 (EA Canada)

    - Bethesda's latest content pack for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (X360, PC) is now available for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game. Entitled "The Thieves Den," it includes a lost pirate ship and is intended for stealth-based characters. The Thieves Den is available for 150 Microsoft Points ($1.88).
    - Three new cars for Bizarre Creations' Project Gotham Racing 3 are now available as part of a free downloadable "Cadillac Pack." The pack includes Cadillac models CTS-V, STS-V, and XLR-V.

Slow news!
  • Assassin's Creed: Exclusive or Not?

    [ps3]

For several days now, there have been contradictory reports and pieces of evidence over whether or not Ubisoft Montreal's Assassin's Creed is a PS3-exclusive title. Currently, the game has only been officially announced by Ubisoft to be in development for PlayStation 3. However, back at Microsoft's X05 event last October, when the game was still unrevealed and known as the mysterious "Project Assassin's," exec Peter Moore listed the game as coming to Xbox 360. In the game's official reveal, it was listed only as coming to PS3--though the press released noted it had not yet been concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America.

To complicate matters further, at E3 last week, several show attendees claimed that in the game's closed doors demos, it was not being shown on PlayStation 3 hardware, unlike other PS3 titles at the show. Rather, it was running from an unidentified concealed machine and played with a PS2 controller rather than a PS3 controller. Some speculated that the game was in fact on Xbox 360 and being controlled by a third party USB controller. There has been little evidence to back this particular assertion up. Ubisoft responded that the box was in fact a PC emulating the PS3 environment.

It's hard to say whether the game is in fact exclusive to PlayStation 3, though it seems a very unlikely scenario. Ubisoft is known as a very multiplatform-oriented developer rarely putting out console-exclusive franchises, and to this day there has been no verbage from Ubi explicitly stating that the game is "exclusive" to PS3. Rather, the official company line is currently that PS3 is the only announced platform for the game. Don't be surprised if this one turns out to be a timed exclusive with the possibility of jumping to Xbox 360 and even PC later on.

  • Fear Effect Sequel Update

    [ps3] [xbox360]

After yesterday's news from The Hollywood Reporter that Eidos will be licensing the rights to a Fear Effect movie and developing a new Fear Effect game, the publisher has officially commented on the situation. An Eidos representative stated that while the game is not currently in development, such a project is currently under discussion. The news may be just PR speak, with development already progressing, but it's just as likely The Hollywood Reporter jumped the gun.

  • That Secret Port

    [nintendo]

What is it about Nintendo hardware and weird little ports and flaps that nobody can ever identify? Remember the "secret port" on the DS that turned out to be nothing more than a microphone headset input? Anyway, that's been happening again with Wii. There's a small rectangular compartment to the left of the system's slot-loading disc drive (visible in this shot), and the internets have been rife with speculation over its function. Speculate no further. It's the system's SD card slot.

THQ and Relic Entertainment today announced that a second expansion pack for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is in development. Due for this release this fall, "Dark Crusade" will add the Tau Empire and the Necrons as playable races. The expansion also features a new singleplayer campaign and new multiplayer options.
"With Dark Crusade we have taken a very different and exciting route with the single player game, allowing the player to conquer the globe as any of the seven unique playable races," said Ron Moravek, vice president THQ, general manager Relic Entertainment. "The Dawn of War franchise has become synonymous with innovation and attention to detail and we have drawn on the extensive knowledge base that Games Workshop's exhaustive universe provides us with to bring classic Tau and Necron combatants to the battlefield on Kronos."
