Ratchet & Clank Dev Debates Graphics vs. Framerate, 'Probably' Not Making More 60 FPS Games

Following an analysis of review scores and the value of a fast framerate over graphic quality, Insomniac has stated that just-released platformer Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time (PS3) is "probably" its last game to run at 60 frames per second.

"There is virtually no advantage in sales or reviews of a 60 fps game versus a 30 fps game," reads a blog post from Mike Acton, the studio's engine director. "However it does appear that gameplay scores are also influenced by graphics scores. i.e. Better looking games appear to be more 'fun' to reviewers."

The third Ratchet & Clank Future release on PlayStation 3, A Crack in Time sees robotic companion Clank solving puzzles with time and bashing enemies with a giant wand as the ever-furry Ratchet continues in his offensive wrench-swinging, gun-firing ways.

In keeping with recent trends, numerous retailers are offering various exclusive pre-order bonuses for those that reserve the action-platformer, such as "a special level that resembles the layout of the Insomniac Games' offices" from GameStop.

While developer Insomniac has long teased a new Ratchet & Clank game for this year, publisher Sony Computer Entertainment today made it official, revealing that the next PlayStation 3 adventure for the lombax-robot duo is subtitled "A Crack in Time."

The action-adventure platformer picks up where last summer's downloadable entry Quest for Booty left off, and promises to answer "some of the franchise fans' biggest questions" through the magic of time travel. It's slated to hit retailers this fall.
